gblackMemberSomeone came by our house on Sw Charlestown and cut up our Christmas decorations in our front yard.
We have lived here for 40 years and this is the first time anything like this has been done. I’m so sad.

mirabileMemberThis makes me sad, too. I really love this time of year, in particular the decorations and lights that people put up. I’m not exactly sure why, but I think it has something to do with the sense of community that follows individual households putting up displays for complete strangers (those who happen to see the display). I’m very sorry to read this post and hope that gblack won’t let this sour his/her taste for holiday display spirit.

SlyBankerMemberGood point. I never thought of it that way. They are creating a sense of community by giving everyone a visual gift this time of year. I hope you were able to salvage some of the decorations, gblack. I’d put them back up. Don’t let some Grinch stop you.

yes, I LOVE holiday lights and decorations; it’s my favorite part of the holidays; every time I drive around to look, I think “THANK YOU SO MUCH NEIGHBORS FOR SHARING YOUR GORGEOUS DISPLAYS FOR EVERYONE TO ENJOY”

wondering if you’re on Charlestown east of California, which is near “listen to the music” and close to me on Hinds; this is area of holiday displays that I see most, and there are many beautiful decorations

mytwocentsParticipantWe live down the street from you. A couple years ago our big Frosty the Snowman was taken from our front yard, never to be seen or heard from again. I hope he is happy with his new family… I am sorry there are stupid people out there who cannot appreciate all the work and effort you put into making your decorations always look so nice.

dhgParticipantJust saw a story on King5 (after Full Tilt story) about a guy who put up cameras to catch whoever it was cutting up his lights. Turned out it was a rabbit! Could the same be true here?

West Seattle Art AttackMemberEd and Gail, There is still hope. For every senseless act of vandalism there are multiple acts of random kindness. A few years back a house on Beach Drive had their pumpkin stolen. A few days later a glass pumpkin magically appeared in its place. There are still elves (and Elvises) and fairies living in West Seattle and perhaps one will visit you to help restore your faith in humanity. . . . . it’s hard to ignore when someone does something mean and it directly impacts you but keep your eyes open, look in the community and on the blog for all the wonderful things that happen too. Not only bad things are happening in West Seattle. . . . . . I am very sorry someone was so thoughtless with your decorations.

tessieonalkiMemberAre you sure its a person? it could be an animal like the rabbit that chewed through the other families christmas lights. They said it hapened every year for the last three or four. I would like to think its not a person who would do something like that.

It made our day. We have a new Thomas blowup on the way in the mail but not in time for this year.
We had a lot of little kids stoping to enjoy our Thomas so we want to replace it. Thanks again for everyone who let us know how good West Seattle people realry are.

cswartzMemberIt was most definitely someone with a knife or sharp object. Big holes were cut in the decorations. My Dad has managed to patch them and get them up for the rest of Christmas. Thank you to the Art Attack it was greatly appreciated!

OwnerMaryMemberI hope you reported it to the police, Your decorations, coupled with the Middle Schools trees that were chopped…. makes me wonder if some teen thinks he got a great toy to play with. Malicious behavior – I hope the parents of kids in the area are talking to their kids about good and bad behavior.

RarelyEverParticipantThe story of the trees that were chopped down in front of Madison Middle School fits right into this thread. What the hell is going on here lately? I was sad to read about the holiday decorations, but the tree mutilation really pisses me off. These are (were!) living organisms that obviously never hurt anyone. What kind of a sociopath do you have to be to chop down trees for no reason?? A bored one, I suppose. Do we still have labor camps? If not, there’s a great idea for a ballot initiative.

nuemesMemberMy guess is it’s just teens up to no good and that it was a random act.
Parents: keep your teens busy on weekend nights at Vera Project if they feel the need to get out of the house. Of course, if you’re a nice enough parent to encourage your kid to go there you’re kid doesn’t likely have the pent up anger involved in tearing down yard decorations or trees to begin with.

melissaParticipantDamn, people. Yes, there are mean, crooked, hateful folks out there, but that’s not all. Look at the kindness around you. Look at the people helping others, giving to others & expecting nothing in return. Watch the loving folks spending time with the families they were born into and the families they’ve chosen. Buy a cup of coffee for the person behind you in line. Open the door for someone. Drop off the $10 you were going to spend on something you don’t need at the foodbank instead. That love you send out? It’s needed far more than wringing of hands and negativity about the people around you.

rwParticipantI’ll bet it’s related to the Madison school tree culprits. One or more kids in pain, needing a way to express their pain and anger. Certainly doesn’t make it acceptable or tolerable, but I wouldn’t call it a “neighborhood going down the tubes” type of situation either.
