Van bumps 17th/Roxbury restaurant, takes out hydrant

Thanks to Ricardo Guarnero @ Cafe Rozella for the tip – he says there’s been a crash at the 17th/Roxbury corner (and sent photos; he says it looks like the Taqueria Guaymas building is OK but the van that hit it took out a hydrant – you can see it in the lower left of his photo) – good idea to avoid that area for now. (No medic unit was dispatched, so no serious injuries so far as we can tell.)

This is why they have the “Wet Burrito”

    Love that place!

Is it weird to anyone else that a van took out a hydrant and there is no water? Is the city just planting fake hydrants around to make us feel better.

Todd I noticed the same thing!

Fire hydrants are dry pipe connections to a water main that has it’s valve opened when the fire hydrant is turned “on” with a wrench

But it always happens in the movies! So you’re saying Hollywood LIED to us?

  • charlabob April 25, 2008 (6:57 pm)

No, JenV — movies wouldn’t lie to you. The system Jack described is a replacement for what we all remember from movies — frolicking in the wake of a fire hydrant on a summer day. Turns out, that meant the folks who had fires had no water pressure — and having cops come to stop the kids, um, caused all kinds of problems. So technology intervened :-) Movies only lie when they have happy endings. (I DIDN’T SAY THAT!)

There was a car that crashed near my house in the mid 80’s that took out a hydrant and I am here to tell you THAT was ALOT of water!!! Glad to hear that technology had intervened in the meantime…

Also glad to see that Taqueria Guayamas is ok, as we are big fans of them in our house… Yum.

I can just imagine the conversation that followed this incident – “Sorry ma’am, we don’t have a drive thru here…”

  • WSB April 25, 2008 (8:19 pm)

We just drove by and the only evidence of the crash is a little bit of scraped stucco on the corner of the building right where the photo shows the van had bumped it. (Plus yellow police/hazard tape around the pole.)

man this almost hitting buildings with vehicles thing
is contagious. my friend’s neighbor’s kid put the family minivan through her fence. couple of more feet and it would made it into the bedroom where she was napping.

Sorry, comment time is over.
