Alki United Church of Christ (Alki UCC) and its partner synagogue, Kol HaNeshamah invite our wider community to a multi-faith presentation/discussion about peace efforts in Israel/the emerging state of Palestine. Co-sponsored by KHN and Alki UCC, “Pilgrimage for Peace” is Saturday, November 7 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at 6115 SW Hinds. Admission is free; no reservations required.

Featured speakers:

· Sami Awad, the Executive Director of Holy Land Trust (HLT), a
Palestinian nonprofit he founded in 1998 in Bethlehem. HLT works with the Palestinian community to build a future founded on nonviolence, equality, justice and peaceful coexistence.

· Rev. Dr. Mae Elise Cannon, a pastor, writer, and academic who focused her dissertation on the history of the American Protestant church in
Israel and Palestine. She has worked as consultant to the Middle East for Compassion International and as the Senior Director of Advocacy and Policy for World Vision.

· Sahar Vardi, an Israeli peace activist who works for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) in Jerusalem. A secular Jew, she has been an integral part of a number of Israeli peace organizations that try to break down barriers between Israelis and Palestinians.

KHN’s Rabbi, Zari Weiss, and a group of KHN members first met Awad during a trip to Israel and the West Bank last summer. They were tremendously inspired by his passion and his work “to create a shared understanding that both peoples — Jews and Palestinians — feel a sense of belonging to and love for this particular parcel of land. They are working to understand that the land is holy for Jews, for Christians and for Muslims.

We hope that not only will we be able to bring the conversation forward, but also that doing so will provide us all with greater clarity and understanding, which might help any of us as individuals know how to translate beliefs and commitments into action. We do this not only ‘L’sheym Shamayim,’ for the Sake of Heaven, Something Greater, but also, for the purpose of helping us all do what we can to bring about a peaceful resolution to this on-going conflict.”
