ROAD WORK, TRAFFIC, TRANSIT: Friday watch, 20th week of West Seattle Bridge closure

6:16 AM: It’s Friday, the 137th morning without the West Seattle Bridge.

ROAD WORK/CLOSURES

*As part of the RapidRide H Line project, SW Genesee will close between 25th and Delridge starting at 9 am today and continuing all weekend. Access east of Avalon will be “local only.” Metro Route 50 will be rerouted – here are the details.

*More West Seattle Junction road work tomorrow, repairing pavement on SW Alaska west of California.

*No 1st Ave. S. Bridge northbound closure tonight – that work is expected to resume Sunday night.

CHECK THE TRAFFIC BEFORE YOU GO

Here’s the 5-way intersection camera (Spokane/West Marginal/Delridge/Chelan):

Here’s the restricted-daytime-access (open to all 9 pm-5 am) low bridge:

The main detour route across the Duwamish River is the 1st Avenue South Bridge (map) . Here’s that camera:

The other major bridge across the river is the South Park Bridge (map). Here’s that camera:

Going through South Park? Don’t speed.

Check the @SDOTBridges Twitter feed for info about any of those bridges opening for marine traffic.

You can see all local traffic cams here; locally relevant cameras are also shown on this WSB page.

I’d be curious to know how many tickets the cop writes in the mornings.  Hopefully enough to justify being there. We all know there are enough violators.

Only 500 more weeks to go and the bridge problem will be solved – we have not had enough meetings nor lawsuits yet for it to be a proper Seattle project. I remember the Forward Thust attempt in the 60’s. Pigeon Hill view property owners brought in their lawyers.

Is there a way to send a notice to West Seattle drivers to keep calm while driving.  The road rage, speeding, cutting people off, throwing up obscenities is just disgusting to see almost daily. Clearly we’re in this together, can’t people treat others with respect, even when in their cars?  Goodness!

    • Derek August 7, 2020 (11:53 am)

That’s part of this whole problem. Everyone is going 70 mph down Marginal just to pass three cars and sit in the same long stop light for 10 minutes. Makes no sense to speed anyways.

I agree with you. People have been really nasty in traffic lately. Just makes it worse.

Yesterday, it was taking people an hour to get to 99, from Highland Park.  Did something change? more people commuting to work? Still haven’t figured out how to drive in the rain?

My wife was driving over the 1st Ave S bridge and said they had only one lane open due to construction around 7:15am. I haven’t been able to find more information, but it’s possible the work went long on the overnight closure. She ended up driving south and getting on 509 in Burien, GPS said it was faster than Olsen Place/Myers Way. I think there was an accident on Roxbury afterwards as well.

On Thursday morning, as noted in a discussion here yesterday, the 1st Ave. S. bridge work ran long.

For whatever it’s worth … I’ve timed the route from Morgan Junction to Downtown Seattle by way of Ambaum-128th-SR509-SR518-I5 a couple of times mid-day:  ± 45 minutes.  I just pretend I live in Federal Way.  ;-)

    • Louise August 7, 2020 (9:01 pm)

Yeah, you can pretend you live in FedWay. That will be fun until you must pay your taxes. It will be a rude awakening….you will be befuddled like Dorothy… “Toto…am not in Federal Way anymore”. Sigh…

Bridge needs to be fixed ASAP. How is it not MORE of a state of emergency? We have 110k+ people trying to bottleneck. This is insanity!

Any idea why construction on Delridge started before 5am today?  I’m at 23rd and Genesee; a block from Delridge.  Was woken up at about 4:50 with what sounded like an excavator dumping debris into a truck.  This continued for probably an hour altogether.  Big crashes every few minutes for awhile, then a gap…..them another series of crashes.  Not coming from Nucor.

SDoT has done little to enhance capacity on the alternative routes.  And adding salt to the wound keeps insisting 1,000 people will bike and 500 will walk to work in the AM peak period.  The reality is that many people will alter their work hours that would be helped via enhancing capacity.  Further adding midday transit service to all parts of WS needs to be in the plan.

    • bill August 8, 2020 (12:33 am)

MJ – Show us this enhanced capacity you speak of. I’ll wait.

Imagine my horror. I actuality live on West Marginal. On 17th, specifically, and I’ve had a front row seat to all of this BS. BS? The bridge broke, ok, well it seems like that was doomed since the first designer decided that a giant span of concrete would last a millenia. I’ve lived in Riverside for about 10 years, and I’ve grown pretty accustomed to the regular drag races every weekend, but honestly, that was the extent of speedtrons getting their noisy kicks in the middle of the night. We drove 40 on West Marginal, with the rare exception. My foot still automatically drops just enough to cap 40 from driving my kid to school every morning. Now here we are, the new age of aggravated tail-gaters aggressively sending the message to drive 60. I don’t acquiesce, instead I maintain my 40mph and sort of take my Seattle local, GenX joy in the anguish of the monster truck driver barreling down to take his place in the endless line to Spokane St. It’s rude. Drivers have become even more rude around here. It’s a bummer. I get through it by imagining these folks just really, really need to poop. But when I can’t even get to the junction from my house in under 40 minutes… the reality sets in and I start thinking I could drive like Vin Deisel too.Stay safe everyone. And please. Please. Be considerate of all of us West Marginal residents who now have to contend with with the enormity of BS down here these days.

Sorry, comment time is over.
