Starting Saturday, don’t omit the area code

You might already use area codes in all the phone calls you make. But if you don’t – you’d better start. It’s mandatory in our state as of tomorrow (Saturday, July 29th), with a fifth area code soon to be added. This has been in the works for more than a year – lots of background info here.

Elderly friend of ours experienced this in another city a bit ago. He was confused and thought that some folks had changed their numbers and didn’t tell him. Turns out that he only had the 7 digit numbers stored in his cell phone and when they didn’t work without the area code, he was lost.

Do you know if  this includes texting to local numbers?

I’m sorry, I can’t find references to texting anywhere. We have long used ten digits for everything, texting as well as voice calling, and I would advise that as a good practice regardless of whether it’s required (which I would *suspect* it is).

Sorry, comment time is over.
