South Seattle Community College (WSB sponsor) is adding another bachelor’s-degree program as of next year. Here’s the announcement:

The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges recently approved a new baccalaureate of applied science (BAS) degree in Sustainable Science Technology that will be offered at South Seattle Community College in the fall of 2014.

In response to industry demand, the primary purpose of this program is to provide students with the skills needed to run an energy-efficient facility.

Industry leaders identified a gap that had formed between the skills of current facility operators and the highly advanced construction of those buildings that have made energy efficiency paramount. This course of study will fill that gap providing the students with the specialized skills that are needed and are now in demand.

“We are proud to offer such an innovative bachelor’s degree program that is the first of its kind in the region,” South Seattle Community College President Gary Oertli said. “Programs like this highlight the value of the relationships we have built with the business community. We will continue to have our fingers on the pulse of industry to set our students up for success in the professional world.”

Candidates for the program include:

>apprentice and journey workers from the building trades

>incumbent workers from industry looking to gain skills

>graduates from other aligned college programs

>participants in grant-funded building science courses

In addition to the new Sustainable Science Technology degree, South also offers bachelor’s degrees in Hospitality Management and Professional Teacher Education.
