West Seattle woman with aid/peace delegation in Gaza

If you follow what’s happening in the Middle East, you may have heard about an international aid delegation, sponsored by the women’s peace group Code Pink, that made it into Gaza from a long-closed Egyptian border crossing. Turns out a West Seattle woman is with the group. Dr. Amal Sedky Winter‘s daughter, Miriam Yovetich, e-mailed to share her mother’s story. In e-mail to family and friends, Dr. Winter described the delegation as “almost 60 women with sleeping bags and tents” as they camped out hoping the border crossing would open so they could fulfill an invitation from the United Nations Refugee Agency to be in Gaza for International Women’s Day last weekend. (Her e-mail can be read in its entirety on this website.) Dr. Winter is an Egyptian-born psychologist who has been in the U.S. since her teen years, and has long advocated on behalf of Arab women’s rights. The delegation’s visit is scheduled to end today, according to this story about a B.C. woman who also is with the group. Dr. Winter’s daughter also tells us her mother has been developing this website to share information about Egypt.

Thank you so much for this connection! I’ve been impressed with the work of Code Pink for years and now I’ve added Dr. Winter’s website to my favorites.

Why the out-pouring of sympathy for Gaza???
Where is the concern of the innocent people of Israel that were victims of REPEATED, RANDOM and UNPROVOKED rocket attacks that they have been suffering through for over 4 YEARS before FINALLY saying ENOUGH IS ENOUGH???
Where are they questions about just what has Hamas done with the HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of dollars that has been poured in to the region for aid to them???
I am sorry about the plight of the people of Gaza, but THEY did elect a TERRORIST organization to represent them.
Code Pink is a radical, leftist, nut job organization that would rather see groups like Hamas, Hezbollah and Al Qaeda kill innocents and OUR troops than offend them.
Do your self a favor and LOOK at just WHAT they REALLY do.

Labeling a group “a radical, leftist, nut job organization” is pretty much equivalent to saying, “I don’t agree with this group, and I’d rather provoke people who do than attempt a thoughtful discussion.” It fails to add useful information to the discussion, any more than labeling them a “conformist, right-wing, nut job organization” would.

The problem with the middle east is that everyone thinks they are right. None of the parties are willing to compromise. So the problem will never go away.

And before you place all of the blame on one party, remember, nobody has clean hands. Nobody.

I agree with Ex-Westwood Resident completely. However, it’s about time women’s groups looked at the horrific violations wrought by Islamic extremists. Where is the outrage over “honor” killings of women in Muslim nations – and in nations beyond? Where is the outrage over intolerance of dissenting views? Let’s not forget the man in Buffalo, NY who brutally beheaded his wife. This same man founded Bridges TV in 2004 to counter anti-Islam stereotypes. Time for peace-loving Muslims who support Israel’s right to exist to speak up.

CB says it best, no one has clean hands on this issue. There are plenty of radical groups on both sides.

Name one internationally recognized Jewish terroirst organization, please. One, say, equivalent to Hamas.

Yeah, I don’t really see what you mean, either, to be honest.

Name one internationally recognized Jewish terroirst organization, please. One, say, equivalent to Hamas.

    Jewish settlers in West Bank.

Bzzt! Wrong answer; you forfeit the prize.
    A) they’re not a recognized organization.
    B) occupying disputed land is not terroristic.
    C) A willingness to defend one’s self and family is a tad different from throwing grenades into civilian buses.
    D) The west bank settlers are not launching missiles into other towns.
    E) The west bank settlers are not kidnapping journalists and forcing them to convert to Judaism as a condition of release.

  • OP March 14, 2009 (1:06 am)

    Jewish settlers in West Bank.

Bzzzzzzzzz! Wrong. Try again. They don’t randomly fire rockets, suicide bomb on school buses or use schools and hospitals as shelter, and women and children as human shields.

    Care to try again?

Sorry, comment time is over.
