anonymeParticipantMy dog has just been diagnosed with a Grade III mast cell tumor. From what I understand, this is a death sentence. I’m just wondering what others have experienced after receiving this diagnosis? Any doctors or treatment specialists to recommend, from oncologists to alternative medicine? I am low income, but will do anything I need to do. She is a 9 year-old greyhound, the sweetest, gentlest, and most exquisitely beautiful dog you’ve ever seen.

LenaParticipantI am so sorry about your girl – it is a hard diagnosis. If it is helpful here is a book I just spent the last three years writing on treating cancer holistically (mast cell 3 is not particularly easy). It is all available online to read. I am working on publishing in e book form but not there yet.

furryfacesParticipantOur hearts are with you anonyme. Dr. Lena (as you probably already know), is highly respected, wonderful doctor.
Keeping you and your dog in our thoughts.

anonymeParticipantDoes anyone know of a local organization that can help with vet bills? The surgery alone was extremely expensive, and the care will skyrocket from here. I’ll break bad if I have to.

dhgParticipantAnonyme, I understand your love of your beastie but you must consider how it feels from her side. Medical treatment is incomprehensible and can be painful. And it is just all the worse if it doesn’t work.

kayoParticipantI am so, so sorry you are going through this with your sweet dog. I don’t have a lot of advice on the treatment side as we opted for palliative care for our dog with cancer. I hope that she can fight this and be comfortable and happy for as long as possible. In the meantime spoil her rotten and enjoy every minute you have with her as much as you can. I also think having an end of life plan in place is very helpful. What will be your criteria and decision points as her illness progresses (I hope it doesn’t or does slowly!) I know those are hard things to think about when you are in cancer fighting mode. I also found some support groups online (facebook) that were helpful when we were going through this with our dogs. Best wishes to you both.

JoBParticipantmy heart breaks for you.. we aren’t fighting cancer but have spent the last couple of years in an expensive and exhausting attempt to save sight… and it could still go either way
do what your heart tells you to do… it’s all any of us can do… and Kayo is right .. spoil her rotten… she will let you know when she has had enough..
i wish i could point you to some financial help

cloverdoParticipantOur chocolate lab was just diagnosed with same. Luckily tumor was on her tail and I think we caught it fairly quickly. We have had her tail amputated and are doing chemo at Access. We have been told a 70% success rate with chemo, but that may have to do with location and that it doesn’t seem to have spread. Other than wait times, have been happy so far with care at Access. So sorry, don’t know of any orgs to help but understand we have done three surgeries in the last month and chemo isn’t cheap.

anonymeParticipantThe past few weeks have been confusing and anguish-ridden. So many things to consider, all while dealing with roller-coaster emotions and a pup with post-op complications.
Then we got in to see Lena McCullough. She turned our lives around. My usually terror-stricken dog took to her right away, and did very well with acupuncture. I’d decided that putting such a sensitive, anxious dog through chemo would be akin to torture, and the minimal time gained just didn’t balance out the negatives. Lena is an amazing person and practitioner, and I feel truly blessed that we were able to start treatment with her. Now I know that my dog’s remaining days (months, years) will have as much health and harmony as possible.
Thank you everyone for your kind words and advice.
