Republishing a letter that just went out to the Admiral Neighborhood mailing list – Dinah has posted things in the forums before but in case she doesn’t post this here:
>>>Dear Neighborhood Business Leaders and Organizations
Ahoy!
Although the Admiral Theater has been here “forever”, it might surprise you that in the last year, it has turned into THE place to go when seeking quality entertainment. From the Mamma Mia “Sing-a-long” and wedding, to the Frances Farmer Film Retrospective, to the recent Pete Seeger Birthday Tribute Film & Hootenanny, we are reaching out to the community to provide an aray of live entertainment to appeal to every age group and ethnicity. At the end of this month; we present May Magic with Phil Crosson (check out info at; http://www.thehistoricadmiraltheater.com) for complete family fun.
Whether it’s our intimate Listening Room Series which provides a creative buffet of acoustic music, live painting and spoken word concerts to our comedy shows and support of indie neighborhood film offerings, the Admiral continues in it’s outreach to become an exciting entertainment performance center. Oh and did you know we now have our tavern license? We can still keep our shows “all ages” by delegating our Crow’s Nest Lounge upstairs for our special shows!
On June 5th- June 11th, for the FIRST time, the Admiral will host a week of international films as a newly added venue with the Seattle International Film Festival. This is quite an achievement and gives full notice to other theaters outside of West Seattle that the Admiral has not only survived but “arrived” as a venue of prestige and commitment to quality.
We are looking for organizations to help us plan and produce a great opening night gala for the community. The 7 p.m. film on opening night is THE ADMIRAL! (Seriously). How cool is that? It’s a big Russian epic, part war story, part love story in the tradition of Dr. Zhivago. We are seeking “partners” who can set up in the lobby and offer appetizers, non-alcoholic beveridges, etc. while getting some great community visibility and good will. Please feel free to forward this email to other West Seattle businesses in your area who might be interested in this proposal.
On a continual basis, we are always looking to partner with our fellow businesses to create fun events for your employees and families. Let us help you set up a dinner and a movie/show night with your favorite restaurant, help you plan a charity benefit show or bring your favorite band to our stages. The possibilities are endless and are limited only by your imagination.
We welcome you “on board” at the Admiral for all your future events. And the good news is….you won’t get seasick!

Topic: starting support group..
Today is international fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome awareness day… and after meeting several people in our community who struggle with these illnesses, i have decided to see if there is interest in a local support group.
Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome are insidious illnesses whose impact can range from mere nuisance to complete disability. The symptoms run the gamut from pain to extreme sensitivity to all stimuli to cognitive dysfunction to extreme exhaustion… and come with a host of fellow travelers like irritable bladder and bowel and migraines and… but the worst symptom of these illnesses is the lack of understanding.
We tell people to imagine the worst flu they ever had… that feeling of lethargy.. the achy breaky body.. the cotton wool separating you from your thoughts… the dizziness… the muscle weakness.. all of that is a normal day for someone who has a moderate case of fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. It gets worse. Much worse.
People smile and nod and walk away absolutely convinced that we exaggerate… even people who know and love us. They know how bad they felt and are sure no-one could be up and functioning when they feel that bad.
The truth is that there are many of us living in your neighborhood and your families who get up every day feeling that bad, put a smile on our faces and try to make something of our lives.
if you know one of those people, give them a hug today. it makes all the difference when someone acknowledges how difficult it is to keep going.
If you are one of those people, please let me know if you are interested in a local support group.
Until today, i was a retired international expert and patient educator for fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue sysndrome… but more important to those who might want a support group… I am experienced… i have been coping with severe fms and cfs since my teens… that’s 45 years of experience dealing with this illness and another 20+ of listening and helping others…
there are new treatment options but the most powerful is shared laughter.
let me know if you are interested. if you are shy.. you can PM me or email me at home joanne@brayden.org.
Topic: Red Light Cameras follow up
Hello all. I received a follow-up call from Mike Quinn with SPD. This was WRT the red light camera’s which were flashing on ocassions when the light wasn’t red.
Mike was happy for the call; and I made it specific to the the cameras at 35th and Thistle. Sometimes the cameras need adjustments so it could be erroneously going off. Other things can cause a camera to shoot too. A hanging cable swaying in the wind; or tree branches.
If you and your vehicle were mistakenly caught in camera on such an ocassion; you will still not need to worry; as the picture wouldn’t meet the minimum standard. The minimum standard requires two still pictures and the back up video (which is on loop). The first picture is taken as a fast moving car approaches the intersection as the light is turning red. It shows the vehicle entering the intersection on a red light. The second picture shows the vehicle in the intersection against the red light and clearly includes the license number. And then there is the video of the car through the whole intersection. The video is available to watch for anyone with a citation.
The camera flash at 35th and Thistle is going to have a shield placed strategically on it to dampen the width of the bright flash which can be a nuisance to neighbors especially at night. The City is also going to check those cameras to determine if any adjustments need to be made.
I hope this helps to calm some of the fears that people have had about unjustifiably receiving a ticket in the mail for running a red light.
If you want Mike Quinn’s phone number, please PM me.
