    borris…

Are you an experienced dog owner?

are you interested in training a pup or a problem dog?

if the dog has a problem, how large is the problem?

If you are a new owner with a new pup.. sound animals is a great place to take your dog to learn how to train them and to socialize. Jeff has a huge heart and his dog attends most training sessions and may be the better trainer for puppy socialization:)

If you are an owner of a dog with a moderate problem.. Jeff’s home visits are well worth the price. He connects personally to both you and your dog and dogs love him.

Jeff’s style is pretty casual.. which i liked and he is also local.. he lives in West Seattle.

They only experience i had with AHIMSA was a phone interview in which they declined to meet my dog. His problems were severe enough that we considered euthanizing him… so i don’t hold that against them.

If you have a much larger problem, i recommend packworks in Madison. It’s a long drive.. it’s not cheap… She is not much of a people person… Gretchen is all business… but they do truly understand dogs with severe problems and they teach you some truly useful tools.

Packworks literally made a life and death difference for my dog. My little shiba boy gets sweeter every day.. and one of these days he may even figure out how to use that sweetness to get the attention he wants from people he doesn’t know.

I will agree with hopey… using only positive reinforcement training such as clicking does require a fairly large time commitment… and

i am honestly not sure which style of training delivers the best trained dogs… and i am not certain how important anything but fairly basic training is for most dogs…

i suspect that dog training is much like raising children.. a never ending juggling act balancing discipline and spoiling.. with spoiling so much more fun when your dog behaves well enough to accompany you:)

talk to the trainers, follow your heart and you won’t go wrong. the best trainer for your dog is one you believe in… and good luck to you and your pet.

I am so over Vatsana, due to the owner (as well, but a different reason) and the food, but I won’t go into it. Buddha Ruksa is more expensive but 20 times better and a wonderful dining experience. The owner of BR (tall, handsome guy?) has bent over backwards for us there-once bringing us (unprompted) free glasses of wine and an appetizer when we waited all of 5 minutes for our menus. Great service, great food, nice atmosphere.

Republishing a letter that just went out to the Admiral Neighborhood mailing list – Dinah has posted things in the forums before but in case she doesn’t post this here:

    >>>Dear Neighborhood Business Leaders and Organizations

    Ahoy!

Although the Admiral Theater has been here “forever”, it might surprise you that in the last year, it has turned into THE place to go when seeking quality entertainment. From the Mamma Mia “Sing-a-long” and wedding, to the Frances Farmer Film Retrospective, to the recent Pete Seeger Birthday Tribute Film & Hootenanny, we are reaching out to the community to provide an aray of live entertainment to appeal to every age group and ethnicity. At the end of this month; we present May Magic with Phil Crosson (check out info at; http://www.thehistoricadmiraltheater.com) for complete family fun.

Whether it’s our intimate Listening Room Series which provides a creative buffet of acoustic music, live painting and spoken word concerts to our comedy shows and support of indie neighborhood film offerings, the Admiral continues in it’s outreach to become an exciting entertainment performance center. Oh and did you know we now have our tavern license? We can still keep our shows “all ages” by delegating our Crow’s Nest Lounge upstairs for our special shows!

On June 5th- June 11th, for the FIRST time, the Admiral will host a week of international films as a newly added venue with the Seattle International Film Festival. This is quite an achievement and gives full notice to other theaters outside of West Seattle that the Admiral has not only survived but “arrived” as a venue of prestige and commitment to quality.

We are looking for organizations to help us plan and produce a great opening night gala for the community. The 7 p.m. film on opening night is THE ADMIRAL! (Seriously). How cool is that? It’s a big Russian epic, part war story, part love story in the tradition of Dr. Zhivago. We are seeking “partners” who can set up in the lobby and offer appetizers, non-alcoholic beveridges, etc. while getting some great community visibility and good will. Please feel free to forward this email to other West Seattle businesses in your area who might be interested in this proposal.

On a continual basis, we are always looking to partner with our fellow businesses to create fun events for your employees and families. Let us help you set up a dinner and a movie/show night with your favorite restaurant, help you plan a charity benefit show or bring your favorite band to our stages. The possibilities are endless and are limited only by your imagination.

We welcome you “on board” at the Admiral for all your future events. And the good news is….you won’t get seasick!

The streets heading east off of Admiral all drop down one way or the other to the street Luna park is on. I’m not sure the grade is any less steep, and there are no sidewalks, but there are lots of families living the homes and apartments around there, and there are often kids playing in the road so most residents around there move pretty slowly in their cars.

If yours is like mine, there are plenty of stalks ripe now. just pull them off at the rootball, cut off and discard the leaves and cook and eat the stalks. favorite recipe: Bluebarb (essentially, blueberry rhubarb crumble).

Good observation. Although your vehicle’s picture was taken it still would not meet the minimum standard for mailing out a citation. The first “still” picture would indicate that you were turning left on a green arrow; as would the 15 second video. Perhaps that is one of the adjustments that are being made; so as to not take pictures of cars turning left off of 35th onto Thistle with a green arrow.

The core flaw in the DARE program is that adults lie to them about pot.

Authority figures lying and proving the authoritarian maxim that “the ends justify the means” can’t help but backfire in the era of wide-spread factual info.

When they lie to kids about pot, they invalidate the very real dangers of meth and opiates almost as much as the fact that Keith Richards is still alive does. :)

Today is international fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome awareness day… and after meeting several people in our community who struggle with these illnesses, i have decided to see if there is interest in a local support group.

Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome are insidious illnesses whose impact can range from mere nuisance to complete disability. The symptoms run the gamut from pain to extreme sensitivity to all stimuli to cognitive dysfunction to extreme exhaustion… and come with a host of fellow travelers like irritable bladder and bowel and migraines and… but the worst symptom of these illnesses is the lack of understanding.

We tell people to imagine the worst flu they ever had… that feeling of lethargy.. the achy breaky body.. the cotton wool separating you from your thoughts… the dizziness… the muscle weakness.. all of that is a normal day for someone who has a moderate case of fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. It gets worse. Much worse.

People smile and nod and walk away absolutely convinced that we exaggerate… even people who know and love us. They know how bad they felt and are sure no-one could be up and functioning when they feel that bad.

The truth is that there are many of us living in your neighborhood and your families who get up every day feeling that bad, put a smile on our faces and try to make something of our lives.

if you know one of those people, give them a hug today. it makes all the difference when someone acknowledges how difficult it is to keep going.

If you are one of those people, please let me know if you are interested in a local support group.

Until today, i was a retired international expert and patient educator for fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue sysndrome… but more important to those who might want a support group… I am experienced… i have been coping with severe fms and cfs since my teens… that’s 45 years of experience dealing with this illness and another 20+ of listening and helping others…

there are new treatment options but the most powerful is shared laughter.

let me know if you are interested. if you are shy.. you can PM me or email me at home joanne@brayden.org.

D.A.R.E. is a lame program and many police departments have dropped it due to lack of proof it has any effect on reducing drug use.

D.A.R.E. America is the company that oversees the program nationwide and is all about bringing in money to its coffers.

And reference celestes comment at #3 to contact the King County Sheriff’s Office–don’t bother as they don’t have a D.A.R.E. program either.

(FWIW, there’s no such agency as King County Police. They changed their name to Sheriff’s Office several years ago.)

Hello all. I received a follow-up call from Mike Quinn with SPD. This was WRT the red light camera’s which were flashing on ocassions when the light wasn’t red.

Mike was happy for the call; and I made it specific to the the cameras at 35th and Thistle. Sometimes the cameras need adjustments so it could be erroneously going off. Other things can cause a camera to shoot too. A hanging cable swaying in the wind; or tree branches.

If you and your vehicle were mistakenly caught in camera on such an ocassion; you will still not need to worry; as the picture wouldn’t meet the minimum standard. The minimum standard requires two still pictures and the back up video (which is on loop). The first picture is taken as a fast moving car approaches the intersection as the light is turning red. It shows the vehicle entering the intersection on a red light. The second picture shows the vehicle in the intersection against the red light and clearly includes the license number. And then there is the video of the car through the whole intersection. The video is available to watch for anyone with a citation.

The camera flash at 35th and Thistle is going to have a shield placed strategically on it to dampen the width of the bright flash which can be a nuisance to neighbors especially at night. The City is also going to check those cameras to determine if any adjustments need to be made.

I hope this helps to calm some of the fears that people have had about unjustifiably receiving a ticket in the mail for running a red light.

If you want Mike Quinn’s phone number, please PM me.

I made the switch from BOA to BECU nearly two years ago and I have not regretted it one bit. The rates, experience and customer service has been great. Last year, some suspicious charges came through and they called us to see if they were ours- before the transactions even went through!

Plus it doesn’t hurt my feelings that I actually make interest money, instead of paying the bank a fee each month. The ATM and neighborhood centers are also very convenient. So, IMHO, you won’t regret making the switch.

I switched from WaMu to BECU about a year ago and couldn’t be happier. Customer service is awesome, and you can’t beat the interest rates – I never had enough money to qualify for interest on my checking account with any bank, so it’s nice to finally get some interest on my money with BECU!

I have a car loan with them at a really great rate, and also a Visa card which is at an insanely low fixed rate and no fees to use a convenience check.

When I have to go in person I usually use the locations at Admiral Safeway or the 2nd & Pine branch downtown. You can use 7-11 ATMs for free, and there’s also a free-standing BECU ATM near Thriftway and also (I think) near Alki Bakery.

I actually have 3 different accounts with credit unions……don’t ask. Prevail (formerly King County CU), Watermark & Seattle Metropolitan CU. I haven’t had any problrms with any of them. It’s convenient that they all participate in the branch share deal. I can deposit(as well as withdrawl $$) a check into my Seattle Metropolitan account at a BECU ATM. No extra charge! That’s AWESOME! Another plus is that as far as I know all 3 process deposits before withdrawls…. which in my case avoids O/D fees! As a married couple & business, we have 2 accounts with Wells Fargo. It seems like anytime there’s an issue, it’s a battle! And they process everything as it comes through…..Sometimes and not to our advantage! We are working on making the change to a credit union.

I’ve been a BECU customer for about 15 years. In early days it was a little inconvenient to have to travel to the branch in Tukwila to do some of my banking but with all the branch offices and BECU ATM’s in the area it’s pretty easy now.

I like the whole credit union network thing so I can use Watermark ATMs for free, too.

You don’t get free checks and you don’t get great interest rates but I’ve been pretty happy overall.

Actually the area north of The Mount is simply Fairmount. There is a Fairmount Community Association but they don’t have a website. They meet periodically … here’s our article about a meeting we covered last November:

    https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=11707

Fairmount Springs is actually a couple miles away, in the area just south of Fairmount Park, further complicating matters.

I would seriously advise not using any site that’s not city-based or WS-based in terms of neighborhood names.

I’ll go haul out the official city boundary maps and add them to this post in a minute – although they have a bit of screwiness – there are some local neighborhoods not included in the map, and they use some names that are not in general use where they use them (for example, “Roxhill” is used for a sweeping area, whereas in practice, it’s not used much outside the immediate Roxhill park/school vicinity).

    (added)

    http://clerk.ci.seattle.wa.us/public/nmaps/south.htm

Keep clicking on the map to get closer in and closer in. Although upon further review it’s not much help. Yes, 33rd and Andover would be the Luna Park area. Which isn’t acknowledged on the map. Quick, somebody start a Luna Park Neighborhood Association! Things are booming there.
