The clerk told one tv crew the crash sent a soda machine flying right by him. (It’s in one of the photos in the coverage we linked to below.)

Pretty safe bet the driver was DUI!

  • WSMom February 21, 2008 (10:14 am)

This building is such an eyesore. Won’t see anyone asking for landmark status here. Guess we can hope the damage is significant enough to require bulldozing and starting over.

  • roddy February 21, 2008 (10:16 am)

Yeah, tear it down, it’s a great place for condos! ;)

  • Rockyraccoon February 21, 2008 (10:39 am)

Yes, clear it away immediately! All the new construction springing up is breathtakingly lovely!

Any news on the accident on California by Hiawatha Park last night involving an SUV and a van?

  • Rick February 21, 2008 (11:27 am)

Yeah. Condos. But only if there’s a Starbucks, real estate office and at least one nail shop on the commercial level!

  • Jessica February 21, 2008 (11:32 am)

I was thinking the same thing, tear that thing down!

  • Todd in Wastewood February 21, 2008 (11:43 am)

i was thinking it would be a great location for another QFC or Safeway. i mean, they are soooo far away.

  • Brian February 21, 2008 (12:19 pm)

Hey come on! Please don’t tear my house down!

  • mark February 21, 2008 (12:29 pm)

    West Seattle has a Motel??

  • Kayleigh February 21, 2008 (12:30 pm)

How fast must the driver have been going to send a Coke ™ machine flying?

  • WSMom February 21, 2008 (12:35 pm)

I was thinking not of more condos or supermarkets, but a nice hotel my sister and her kids could comfortably stay in while visiting West Seattle. Is there not enough demand for even a small hotel to make it in West Seattle? Let’s face it, the Seattle West Inn & Suites looks pretty creepy from the outside. I wouldn’t want to let a dog I liked stay in that place, might end up with fleas.

Folks, we are loosing our touch.. We’re into double digit comments and not a mention of Trader Joe’s ?

That whole end of Alaska is somewhat dreary, even the new Y sits among mostly unattractive block-style structures. I used that motel when it was a Travel Lodge a while back when we were WS house hunting. It’s certainly no better/worse than many motels I’ve stayed at in small towns across the country. These operations really don’t make that much money and do provide both a place to stay and employment. But, I’d love to see a Silver Cloud multi-story go in somewhere. The company says they are really only looking for waterfront props these days and that probably means no Silver Cloud in our future.

Totally TJ. That’s what I heard. hahaha Let the rumors continue.

  • acemotel February 21, 2008 (2:13 pm)

That poor hotel has been much maligned….. Kudos to WSB for being running out to get photos!

this seems like a good time to think about a new monorail stop?
put it back on the ballot!

  • jiggers February 21, 2008 (2:50 pm)

I prefer a brothel of some sort.

  • todd in Westwood February 21, 2008 (4:34 pm)

Hey Jiggers, isn’t it already? Wasnt there stories about prostitutes at the bus stop across the street from there a while back?

  • I Heart Jiggers! February 21, 2008 (5:58 pm)

Hi WS Mom! Try looking for West Seattle places on vrbo.com (vacation rental by owner). I send my mom to a little place between California and Fauntleroy that I found on their site.

TJs or Brothel? At least at TJs you’re still allowed to fondle the merchandise…

  • chas redmond February 21, 2008 (6:15 pm)

Funny. In Butte at some of the famous “madame” houses, I understand it was “fondle, pick and choose, pay, and use.” Can holding up a wine bottle or can of nuts and reading the label really be considered “fondling.”

here’s a couple off bad double entendres in the same spirit.

I fondle a lot of boxes.

I fondle a lot of packages.

    okay, I’ll quit now.

An enterprising entrepreneur (who is American but from Asia) attempted to develop a boutique hotel on Alki at one of his properties that he owns, but he was met with severe resistance from certain neighbors who were inferring “foreign investment” as an objection to this project.

A project like this would have been perfect for the businesses along Alki, as well as served the entire West Seattle community. The problem, as I view is, is that people sometimes object to these developments as being an intrusion on their space, not realizing that the development of our quiet neighborhood is already in the works. Our objective as responsible residents here, is to make sure that what is built/developed is of a high standard and will further contribute to the welfare and development of West Seattle.

I believe an upscale hotel/motel will do that.

West Seattle really needs to have a nice hotel/motel in the future plans as it is becoming increasing evident that we are attracting major “anchor” businesses. The closest place anyone can stay is either downtown, Queen Anne or the airport (aside a few B&Bs).

It is very unfortunate that someone was driving under the influence and destroyed someone’s business in the process. While I don’t think the motel was the best example of an upscale motel, I certainly would be harmed if someone ran their car into my place of work. Shame on those who made light of someone’s business being destroyed, even if it was in jest.

  • GenHillOne February 23, 2008 (12:06 pm)

Ray I’m not sure foreign investment was as much of an issue (for those who objected) as the proposed location on Alki. I seem to remember a pretty favorable comment section here when there was discussion of a possible hotel next to Salty’s down on Harbor Avenue.

  • dis February 23, 2008 (11:39 pm)

The objection to the hotel on Alki was not foreign investment. (you must be hallucinating!!!!!) Foreign investment never entered in the conversation, and I think you are trying to stir up false rumors and innuendo by making this accusation. According to zoning restrictions, hotel is not permitted in that portion of Alki Avenue – in the little business district near Starbucks, Sunfish, Duke’s, etc. THAT was the objection.

We’ve had family stay at the (former) Travelodge, and it looks just fine now as the West Seattle Inn and Suites. Let’s not have West Seattle go so “yup-scale” that we absolutely need to have a “boutique/upscale” hotel to think we’ve “made it”. What about the working class, people? We need a place to stay too. Motel 6 is fine with me, as is this hotel. Get over yourselves and realize how this thread sounds. West Seattle is a great community and not everything has to be just like it is in Bellevue.

  • Kathleen February 25, 2008 (5:27 pm)

I get my car repaired at one of the local businesses a block away from the hotel, and they say it attracts hookers and drug dealers. Even if that isn’t true, it’s the local perception, and I haven’t seen any effort on anyone’s part to change that perception. I’d love for it to be developed into a nice hotel. Not a fancy place, but somewhere my in-laws could stay at when they come to town! LOL!

Sorry, comment time is over.
