Dog-poisoning investigation update, plus a party for “Mo”

Some good news about the dog-poisoning concerns at Fauntleroy Park and Westcrest Park (background in previous WSB coverage here): Seattle Parks security supervisor Larry Campbell was at tonight’s West Seattle Community Safety Partnership meeting, and he says nothing more has been reported since the most widely publicized case, in which “Mo” the Katrina survivor (photo left) got sick after romping at Westcrest. However, he says, the Parks Department has put up flyers saying it’s keeping close watch on the parks, and asking that anyone who sees anything suspicious, or thinks their dog’s been poisoned, call 206/684-7457. Meantime, “Mo” continues to recover, and we just got word tonight of a fundraising party this weekend:

Cammie Owen, who adopted “Mo” after he was rescued from the Katrina aftermath by Puget Sound-based Pasado’s Safe Haven (more here), says the event is 4 pm this Sunday @ Beveridge Place Pub, with $10 admission that includes a beverage. During the event, there will also be a raffle for prizes including gift baskets from Mud Bay, Pet Elements, and Next to Nature. Here’s the official flyer:

Go Mo!! Hope to meet you someday and shake your paw.

Will try to stop by and make a donation- a pay pal account would help those who would love to chip-in from home. Just a thought.

And thanks WSB and Cammie- you’re the best. Hope there’s enough left over for a nice T-bone for you know who.

We love you Mo! I’ll certainly try to be there for the event.

On a note of safety, please keep a close eye on dear Mo…The poison may have caused brain damage like it did to my dog many many years ago from a very similar situation.

There was some wacko in our neighborhood poisoning the animals in our rural part of town.

All the small dogs and cats were killed and the bigger dogs were very ill. We didn’t know what was going on at first, but it didn’t take long to figure it out.. W

We finally found one of the piles of cooked meat set out for the animals to find. I took it to the vets, they were able to check it and found it to be mixed with rat poison.

My big dog, a Great Dane and Dalmation mix, seemed to be ok after awhile, but within the year, he became more vicious when he would play and wrestle, and became freaked out over things that he shouldn’t have been, and he got so bad, that we had to put this healthy “looking” gorgeous animal to sleep. It broke my heart to pieces. But he became vicious with other dogs, and like I said, when he played with me, he became too aggresive, and I became fearful of my big guy. Sorry to go on and on about this, but I sure wouldn’t want anything bad to happen, with other dogs or people, due to the poisoning.

why can’t we all just get along? And for the sicko who is getting some kind of twisted kick out of reading about all of this…well, you’ll get yours in the end, and I feel very sorry for you. Get some help for yourself before you cause more damage or even be the root cause for some one or some animal to die. Peace.

Thank you Vanessa for sharing your concern and experience. Since this happened to your sweet dog many years ago, it is likely that there was Strychnine or Arsenic in the rat poison ingested. Most Rat poisons on the market now are “anticoagulants” which can be life-threatening, but there is an antidote if caught in time. For the other types of rat poison, there is no antidote.

I will of course always be on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary with Mo, and all my pups.

    Thank you :)

DML, thank you. I hope you can come to the event. It should be tons of fun! If you aren’t able to come, but would like to participate, please contact me directly through my website and I can share a couple options with you.

Also, for everyone’s information, in the event that donations exceed Mo’s bill, all additional donations will be given directly to Pasado Safe Haven who saved his life the first time in New Orleans. Of course, Mo will get appropriately spoiled with steak and other goodies anyhow! (We already have to be careful, he has gained a pound or two in the last two weeks from all the extra “loving”) LOL! His face is near impossible to resist and I am just so grateful that we still have it to look at!
    :)

Me too, Cammie. We love the guy, he’s a gem. See you Sunday!

  • Tonya February 21, 2008 (2:39 pm)

I wish I could attend but can’t. I have to say I think Mo is GORGEOUS!!! What a face he has.

Is there a way to donate on line?
    Tonya

  • Cammie February 21, 2008 (5:06 pm)

Tonya, and anyone else that can’t attend but would like to donate via paypal or check, please contact me through my website. My friend has set up a paypal account for Mo’s donations, but I don’t want to post my friends email on the web. I can give the info to anyone who contacts me. The VCA hospital has asked my friend (who organized a big part of the fundraising) to handle keeping track of donations and putting them in a spreadsheet so the VCA hospital can calculate their matching funds. I also have the contact information for Stephanie Rowlee, the hospital manager, if anyone would like to verify legitimacy. To contact me, go to http://www.cammieowen.com and click the “contact” link. Thank you for wanting to help!
    Cheers,
    Cammie

Good Luck with your event! I hope Mo is on the mend and will be back to playing fetch ASAP.

Just an Idea I had . . . It Might be cool to set up a Donation Jar with Mo’s photo & a little blurb about what is going on with him on it at the Bar. That way People could just drop by and leave some money when they can. PLus you might get the attention of people who may not have heard about the poisoning.

  • Gingersnap February 22, 2008 (8:33 pm)

Have you contacted king5? I think they did a piece on this in the news. It would be a great follow-up to have them show up at the FUNdraiser. If they run this in the news, there could be many more donations, also!

    Just a thought.

Always a good idea to contact ’em directly but just fyi, the citywide media organizations all read this site (that’s where they found out about what happened in the first place, since we were first to report it after reading Cammie’s initial note to a the Westcrest list and asking her for an interview). And be sure when you send info to tv stations (speaking as a former manager at 2 of them here) that you send it to the “tips” e-mailbox, not an individual contact there, and put something catchy in the subject line (in this case it would be POISON SURVIVOR KATRINA DOG FUNDRAISER IN WEST SEATTLE!) … those boxes are deluged with mail.
