BIZNOTE: West Seattle Junction Starbucks workers say their store is closing (updated Monday)

2:45 PM: Almost exactly a year after Starbucks closed its Alki store, the corporation will close its West Seattle Junction store, according to employees. A reader emailed us last night to say Junction employees had just gotten the news; then today we heard from numerous readers (and two more just as we wrote this!) that they were getting the word directly from store staff. So we went there to ask – since corporate HQ is closed for the holiday – and staffers confirmed it to us too (in person but on condition of anonymity). They said the store will close at the start of August, and that they’ve all been told they won’t be laid off, they’ll be able to transfer to other stores. The Starbucks share of the West Seattle coffee scene is shrinking – besides this and last August’s Alki closure, the Starbucks-licensed stands in Jefferson Square and Roxbury Safeways closed recently too. Starbucks will still have five standalone stores in the area – Admiral, Avalon (drive-thru), Morgan Junction, Westwood Village, and White Center (drive-thru). If the early-August timeline holds for the Junction Starbucks, it will close 10 years after it opened as the first tenant in that space in the then-new two-building mixed-use development. Junction 47 has a vacant space next to Starbucks, the former Haymaker Restaurant, though the online listing for that suggests a tenant is “pending” (we’re checking with the broker).

3:55 PM: Broker Jason Miller, first vice president with Kidder Mathews, says a lease is already pending for the Starbucks space too.

MONDAY NOTE: We’ve inquired multiple times and are still waiting for Starbucks’ official response.

4:27 PM MONDAY: A Starbucks spokesperson just sent this statement:

As part of Starbucks standard course of business, we continually evaluate our business to ensure a healthy store portfolio. After careful consideration, we’ve determined it is best to close the store at 4233 SW Alaska Street. Our last day at this location will be August 1. All Starbucks partners (employees) working at that store will have the opportunity to transfer to one of our nearby locations. We look forward to serving our customers at our other locations in our hometown of Seattle.

A local company that is being demonized in its own town.  Starbucks created a LOT of jobs for entry level workers.  They gave generous benefits and tuition reimbursement.  A barista job was never meant to be a means to support a family.  Barista jobs are for students and folks entering the workforce.  I am sad so many here hate Starbucks.

    • Nolan July 4, 2025 (3:58 pm)

Are you sad at all about how Starbucks has been caught union busting and evading tax?

      • JJ July 4, 2025 (11:45 pm)

        This!

    • k July 4, 2025 (4:04 pm)

I don’t know many people who hate Starbucks.  I know people who hate it when companies say they care about workers and then refuse to let those same workers have a say in their working conditions.  I know people who hate when companies say workers should put up with being treated like crap because they get tuition reimbursement.  What I really hate is people who in the same breath clearly express that a job needs to be done, while also saying that job is so unimportant it should just be done by “students and folks entering the workforce”.

It would be interesting to know how the profitability of Starbucks’ Seattle stores compares to their stores in other cities. There are many good or even great coffee shops in Seattle. What Starbucks offers is predictability from one location to another. But explore beyond their confines and you can find much better locally owned coffee shops. I hope this creates new opportunities for some locals to grow and make a name for themselves.

        • bill July 4, 2025 (9:10 pm)

Onion: Predictability FTW! Starbucks products are not stellar, but I know what I will find at a Starbucks. Sure there are superior independent coffee houses but you have to find them. I don’t want an adventure when I’m not looking for an adventure … I want some caffeine, competent staff, and a clean restroom.

      • Todd July 4, 2025 (6:00 pm)

So k, you think students and those entering the workforce should be CEOs? There are “levels” of jobs for a reason. Some jobs – like baristas – are indeed entry level and are meant for students, those entering the workforce, or those with similar credential and experience. Bet you hate this post too, but oh well.

        • WS Res July 4, 2025 (10:30 pm)

Todd, just say that you think there should be a permanent underclass. This is taking forever.

        • Heather July 5, 2025 (5:42 pm)

I’d like to see your source that batista jobs are meant for students and are entry level jobs… and not just low paying jobs only young students will take.

      • Lauren July 5, 2025 (7:25 am)

        💯

    • ITotallyAgreeWithYou July 4, 2025 (4:37 pm)

LUCY-you can walk your condolence card down to Starbucks Headquarters and personally hand it to the CEO, but do check his schedule before you go. The union buster of Chipotle and Sux and Walmart board member flies in on his Starbucks jet from his home in Newport Beach just three days a week. And please do be mindful of your transportation choice getting down there- you have his lifestyle to think about and you wouldn’t want to spew your entry-level emissions on top of that.

    • Brian July 4, 2025 (4:40 pm)

Just because I live here and Starbucks is based here doesn’t mean I owe them a single thing.

    • WS Res July 4, 2025 (6:09 pm)

Barista jobs are for students and folks entering the workforce” – translation: “they don’t deserve a living wage, I assume they all live at home with their parents and are comfortably middle-class.”

    • Derek July 4, 2025 (6:56 pm)

“Local” doesn’t mean good. Don’t union bust. And I despise the notion that these jobs are “for only certain demographics” you’re the same people who tell the homeless “to get a job” but then there’s rules like “nooo not that job!”

    • Tim July 4, 2025 (9:01 pm)

      Sonics

    • ELB July 4, 2025 (9:12 pm)

Starbucks may have begun as a company with the benefit of its employees and suppliers in mind, but they are not that company any longer, and have not been for a long time. They signed a multimillion dollar business deal with Nestle about 7 years ago – something they have kept very quiet about. Nestle is a company that has done unconscionable things for decades – their human rights abuses are well-documented. Starbucks just shrugged, signed on the dotted line, and then gutted their HQ, laying off hundreds of employees. Why? Because $$$. That is the only thing STBX cares about. Let’s not pretend they are anything other than the soulless, greedy, abusive corporation they are today.

      • JJ July 4, 2025 (11:55 pm)

Exactly 💯 no more hiding the truth

      • Seattle Expat July 5, 2025 (1:45 pm)

What deal with Nestle are you referring to? I’ve never heard of it.

        • dumbguy July 6, 2025 (12:27 am)

Look up Global Coffee Alliance – 2018

    • Als July 8, 2025 (11:45 pm)

Respectfully disagree. Have you been to a Starbucks lately? There is a wide demographic of people working there and they are not only college kids nor those “entering the workforce”. There are THOUSANDS of people being laid off in the area and the job market in tech is poor; it’s not uncommon for people with Master’s Degrees and multiple years of experience to find work at Starbucks, Trader Joe’s, and so on, to make ends meet. If I lost my job, I’d be in the same boat. Completely tone deaf comment.

  • Jon Wright July 4, 2025 (3:22 pm)

It feels like Statbucks must be playing hardball with landlords who possibly think they can expect premium rents out of Starbucks? Both the Alki and Alaska Junction locations undoubtedly had the most expensive rent and they are the stores that closed. But I question that strategy; there is something to be said for being where the people are. My wife and I have walked to the Junction store nearly every day since they opened. Going to miss that ritual and the lovely partners who work there.

    • Gabe Rawlins July 5, 2025 (6:07 am)

This. Starbucks just blindly paid exorbitant leases every year, much to the delight of landlords. Now they’re finally playing hardball and saying nope we’re not going to be your cash cow.

    • Ivan Weiss July 6, 2025 (6:36 am)

Can we please stop with this “partners” nonsense? These are employees. Period. The company can use all the euphemistic corporate-speak it wants to. We are not obliged to adopt it.

      • Jon Wright July 6, 2025 (2:06 pm)

Ivan, I bet it’s a hoot to talk to you about sports. “Who’s your favorite player?” “THEY’RE NOT PLAYERS, THEY’RE EMPLOYEES!!!”

        • Jimmy G July 7, 2025 (7:12 pm)

Baseball, basketball and football “players” are yes, all employees, just like Baristas. “Partners” *who can’t legally unionize like players* is just corporate jargon.

  • seeya siren July 4, 2025 (3:44 pm)

Honestly good riddance to Starbucks. They’ve destroyed their reputation through their leaders’ many awful decisions. Glad the employees aren’t losing their jobs though.

I only hope something replaces it that can do the location justice…maybe NOT a pizza place or fine dining restaurant that’ll last two minutes.

    • WSB July 4, 2025 (3:52 pm)

I just heard back from the broker, who says (will add this above) there’s already a lease pending for the Starbucks spot.

      • JM July 4, 2025 (3:59 pm)

Is it the Starbucks spot or the Hammaker spot that has a potential tenant? The top says one thing, but the bottom says another?

        • WSB July 4, 2025 (4:14 pm)

Both, according to the broker (who has represented other space in the building – the lease for JaK’s to follow Lodge, for example).

  • NotAPizzaPlace July 4, 2025 (4:05 pm)

    Pizza by the Slice….

  • Tim Chen July 4, 2025 (4:21 pm)

I am still processing and grieving, and gutted after learning of this yesterday. This was more than a job for me. The connections I have made from serving the community I live in, the people I work with, those are very personal for me. No matter how frustrating or challenging the job may be, I always ground on those connections to give me strength and motivation to wake up at 3am for work, five days a week. While profits is what matters at the end of the day to some, worth is much more than just dollars.

    • Junction Resident July 4, 2025 (7:19 pm)

Tim – your customers are going to miss you as well.  I LOVE this Starbucks location.  It has become my “third place” and I am shocked and sad that it is closing.  I do not enjoy the coffee/atmosphere as much as some of the other Junction coffee shops, so for me this is a huge loss.  Thanks to all of the wonderful Alaska Junction Starbucks staff for making this such a great place over the years.

    • JCA1 July 4, 2025 (10:47 pm)

Thank you Tim Chen. You will have a future filled with love and joy. Easy to predict this because of what you wrote. You’re a special person. Be good to yourself Tim.

  • Adam July 4, 2025 (4:27 pm)

Like a mid level, Harry’s beach house type of restaurant. Not to stuffy…just good neighborhood vibes type of restaurant. That’s my 2 cents not a credit union, pizza place, or junk store.

Fast casual restaurant with a chill non plastic interior (and plants!) and a simple bar that is open in the evenings along side.Or a coffee shop with cozy chairs and a few hammock chairs. (Moar plants!)

  • MrsL July 4, 2025 (6:15 pm)

Wishful thinking but Rocksport 2.0 would be grand! Definitely interested to see what transpires in that space.

  • Not Italian July 4, 2025 (6:21 pm)

Please, just not Italian. I beg you. I’m about ready to open a restaurant and name it “Not Italian”.

  • Derek July 4, 2025 (6:59 pm)

It would be cool if it was a third place that wasn’t a mega corp

  • sgs July 4, 2025 (7:11 pm)

Vegan or Chaco Canyon type with interesting flavors would be nice.

    • Junction Resident July 5, 2025 (10:25 am)

I agree!  There aren’t a lot of vegan options in the junction, and I used to frequent Chaco Canyon a lot when it was around.  It was so fresh tasting.  Something like that would be great.

  • D Martin July 4, 2025 (7:28 pm)

I just never got what was so great about Starbucks coffee. When the had just a handful a stores in Seattle they were great, but now they are just the McDonald’s of coffee. With all the local places all over the Seattle area, there are hundreds of places that I actually enjoy.

  • Joe July 4, 2025 (7:32 pm)

I’ll miss the baristas there. They kept a great atmosphere. They do deserve better. Hopefully we get a local coffee shop in it’s place. The space served as a community hang out, would love for it to stay that way. We need more cafes in West Seattle.

    • Meg July 4, 2025 (10:52 pm)

Joe!!!! Going to miss seeing you everyday, that store was something special!

  • T C July 4, 2025 (8:18 pm)

There are a lot of people throwing around the blame. There’s a lot of reasons why the company is struggling in ways it never has in the past. Starbucks is expected to grow each quarter to keep Wall Street happy. They’ve had to keep up that pace for a long time now. They’ve done a lot of short term things to hit their numbers and are paying the price now. They’re abandoning a lot of what made them successful in the first place. SBux could think long term when they were a private company. They would have kept stores like Alki & the Alaska Junction open. They might not be the most profitable locations in the company but they were important locations for SBux to have a store front. The Drive-Thru locations make soooooo much more money than stores like Alki & the Junction. You’re going to see a lot more of those in the future as SBux has to squeeze every dime out of every square inch of real estate. Don’t listen to SBux when they put the blame elsewhere. SBux is not an honest company.

    • B July 4, 2025 (11:07 pm)

Yeah it seems like they are abandoning the “third space” strategy and are in a race to the bottom with McDonalds and its foray into drive-thru drinks (CosMcs). In the short term, it’s a shame because those stores were so inviting and a great spot for all types of people to cross paths, but it does leave space for something else to grow.

  • Morgan July 4, 2025 (9:38 pm)

Need some Chinese take out in Junction, but imagining we will get more ice cream instead.

  • Delphoxy July 4, 2025 (11:01 pm)

A Starbucks closing, is an example of the planet healing itself.

    • SD July 5, 2025 (6:30 am)

Exactly. Oh no people will have to get their caffeinated milkshakes elsewhere.

  • Bdubbs July 4, 2025 (11:15 pm)

Good! Support our COMMUNITY! Sound & Fog around the corner, is so much better. Starbucks coffee has tasted awful for years, and they are just a giant corporation that doesn’t really care. Clearly they’re in quite a bit of trouble based on all these closures lately.

    • Anne July 6, 2025 (8:10 am)

I wouldn’t say Sound & Fog is “ around the corner” -more in the vicinity -like Uptown & Lula & Hotwire. Taste depends on the individual-you may not like it-someone else does. You don’t want to support it for whatever reason-others will.i support the local folks who worked there & now will either have to transfer if possible or find another job. There is a human cost to these closures-good luck to those that will have to be looking for a new job. It’s not like the smaller coffee shops can absorb all these folks.

  • erik July 5, 2025 (12:24 am)

Wonder how busy the Avalon Starbucks is gonna get now. They already have lines out into the street most days…

  • Tom Walters July 5, 2025 (1:25 am)

Starbucks changed hands in 1987. The founders sold their roasting plant and their six existing stores to Howard Schultz and his investors and went on to purchase Peet’s Coffee in Berkeley CA from its founder Alfred Peet. Alfred Peet sold the Starbucks founders his fresh full city roast coffee in the beginning of Starbucks when they opened their first store in the Pike Place Market in 1971..In 1972 Alfred Peet helped the Starbucks founders buy a small vintage 40s German coffee roaster. And he taught them how to roast the world’s best coffees from 30 different origin countries to his dark “full city roast”. The founders of Starbucks sold fresh roasted coffee and tea and culinary spices to a discerning customer base. They were adamant about not letting Starbucks ever become just some place where run of the mill people came for a cup of adulterated coffee.. black coffee or no coffee.

  • ACG July 5, 2025 (10:01 am)

I will miss the baristas there. Best wishes to all of them. I hope the new tenant is not another real estate office or credit union! As a Junction option for coffee- The staff at Lula’s are great and they consistently make a good drink. The food and snack options are good too.

  • JA July 5, 2025 (2:05 pm)

Please no more alcohol and pizza places! We need more variety!

  • Former WS July 5, 2025 (7:14 pm)

    Lee’s Asian returns FTW.

    • HighPoint July 6, 2025 (5:28 am)

We need Lee’s back! I still dream about the 9 flavor beef… Another vote for Lee’s Asian!

    • sw July 8, 2025 (12:23 pm)

This would be too much to hope for.  I’d love to see Lee’s back, but pretty sure the rent would be out of their range.

  • AlkiRenter July 6, 2025 (12:06 am)

Would be great to see:1. A legit Chinese restaurant OR2. A healthy fast service like Evergreens

  • Nathan July 6, 2025 (6:59 am)

I can’t understand why any Washington State citizen would support Starbucks after past CEO Howard Schultz sold and lost us our SuperSonics  basketball team. I personally will never support Starbucks, I would go through coffee withdrawals if they were the last place I could get a coffee in the world.

    • aa July 6, 2025 (10:19 am)

That is a long time to hold a grudge!

    • gettagripplz July 8, 2025 (8:02 am)

You do realize that Starbucks and Howard selling the Sonics have absolutely nothing to do with each other?

  • WestSideMom July 6, 2025 (8:53 am)

They will put something there that can afford the rent……

    • Another Kyle July 7, 2025 (9:58 am)

This. I’m predicting something bougie like another real estate office or perhaps a something belonging to a large, national chain that can afford that spot. I do agree that we need a Chinese restaurant.

  • newnative July 6, 2025 (10:17 am)

Please something like C & P coffee. I’d travel a lot more to the Junction if it had a welcoming coffee shop. I love the space but never went there because…

  • Mellow Kitty July 6, 2025 (3:17 pm)

Starbucks put itself out of business with over saturation. There’s no need to have one evey half mile.

    • aa July 6, 2025 (9:12 pm)

Pretty sure they are a long way from out of business.

  • Kiki M July 7, 2025 (8:32 am)

I appreciate poster Anne’s comment about the human cost of these closures. I will miss the warm hospitality and welcoming energy of the lovely people who work at the Alaska Junction Starbucks, including Meg, Tim, James, Monique, Kate, and all your cohorts. Thank you for making your regular customers, especially me, feel so at home. And a special thanks to a little dog named Charlotte for introducing me to Cary, my first and favorite coffee shop friend. Bacon and gruyere bites forever!

    • Cary July 7, 2025 (10:55 am)

Love you too Kiki.  Where and how will we continue to commune?I have never felt such a kinship with a place, EVER.  Everyone I have met in WS was here.So sad to see it go.  Beyond words.Cary

    • Monique July 7, 2025 (2:23 pm)

We’re gonna miss seeing all of our wonderful regulars and friends! Thanks for being part of our family Kiki we always appreciate your kindness! :)

  • helpermonkey July 7, 2025 (9:13 am)

Did this store try to unionize? That would be the reason for the closure. They were busy all the time, and obviously rent isn’t a consideration for this company. They’d rather shut down a profitable, popular store than give their workers basic rights. Starbucks is not a local company, they are not a company who cares about their “partners”. Stop falling for their BS.

    • Mark B July 7, 2025 (9:37 am)

If “busy all the time” and rent not being a consideration are deciders for keeping a store open then the (armchair) CFO should be replaced. The real decision makers have nearly infinitely more data on which to base their decisions.

    • Bud July 8, 2025 (9:27 am)

Please provide evidence of this “unionization effort” – or are you just stirring up nonsense?  If you don’t have facts, don’t post like you do.  With regard to “rent isn’t a consideration for this company,” rent (and all expenses) are a PRIMARY consideration for EVERY company.   Even busy stores may not be meeting the financial threshold required to sign a new lease.

      • helpermonkey July 9, 2025 (8:26 am)

Sbux has a very well documented history of closing stores when the employees try to unionize, so no, I am not “stirring up nonsense.”

        • Bud July 9, 2025 (11:11 am)

Actually, it is nonsense in relation to this particular store.  Unless you have evidence that this store was trying to unionize and was closed because of it, what you are posting is factually incorrect.  You are insinuating that this situation is the same as others across the country where unionization efforts were taking place.  Facts need to take precedence over speculation.

  • Carter July 7, 2025 (11:09 am)

I’d love to know who from the above comments actually works there and understands what’s really going on besides the 2 that identified themselves.  Everyone is always a keyboard warrior, oh no the big bad corporations, who do you work for? At least Starbucks is one of the few big companies to give insurance to full AND part-time employees like my daughter who’s working her way through school (which STARBUCKS IS PAYING 100% OF), hires veterans and people over 60, gives back consistently to the community and world (most of which is not advertised so you have to do your homework), still believes in DEI unlike many others who sold out, etc.  I’m sorry but big corporations have faults, they ALL do and some more than others.

    • Lexie July 8, 2025 (8:15 am)

Well-reasoned posts like yours are the exception these days, Carter.  Most people only go online to complain and join the chorus of how this is so horrible.  This store was a gathering spot, clearly cherished by many in the community.  It had people working there who cared about what they did, and who they interacted with.  Is it so hard or wrong to simply celebrate this without all of the angst?  If you don’t like Starbucks coffee, fine – you have other options. This store hitting the 10 year mark obviously was at the end of its lease, and terms could not be negotiated on a new one – end of story.  Will be interesting to see what goes into that space – odds are it will be another chain and not an indie as that rent is likely pretty steep.

      • Lexie July 8, 2025 (9:19 am)

I want to clarify – my post was using “you” in general, not in reference to Carter.  I agree with Carter’s post and have grown weary of the negativity that everyone seems to exude these days.

  • Luke July 7, 2025 (3:20 pm)

Honestly its about time.. starbucks coffee really isn’t that good. I’d rather spend my money at easy street or any other small coffee shop.

  • WSB July 7, 2025 (4:28 pm)

    Starbucks statement just added above.
