Justin Cline, White Center community advocate and Full Tilt Ice Cream founder, has died

(WSB/WCN photo of Justin and family last year as Full Tilt marked 15 years)

Two weeks ago, we reported on community crowdfunding to help the family of Justin Cline, White Center community advocate and founder of Full Tilt Ice Cream, after he suffered a heart attack. Today, we just heard from a Full Tilt staffer announcing on behalf of the family that Justin has died, at age 49. Here’s the announcement published on the original GoFundMe page:

It is with absolutely broken hearts that we share that our beloved friend Justin has moved on to the great ice cream shop in the sky.

Justin died around 6:00 am on Saturday, March 2nd, 2024 at Valley Medical Center. At every step along the way, Valley staff did an incredible job monitoring and managing his ever-changing condition, and taking every possible step to give him excellent care.

Ann, Moss and Ruby, their family and friends, and the entire staff and community of Full Tilt are grieving this loss. Justin will be missed by so many, because he touched so very many people in his life. The number of stories of connections and care that we have heard this past month has been incredible. We have loved hearing all the large and small ways that Justin’s open, giving nature has positively impacted the community as a whole and hundreds of individual lives.

Right now Ann and the kids are understandably distraught and overwhelmed with this tragedy. We understand that everyone wants to connect with Ann, share their memories and stories of Justin, and offer love and comfort. However, the community Justin built around himself is so large and deeply connected that we imagine the outpouring of love could become overwhelming for Ann.

We have created a list of ways that the community can support Ann, Moss and Ruby in this time.

* Continue giving to the GoFundMe to support Justin’s family during this time. Ann’s financial needs will only increase as she navigates this shift to single-parenting and keeping Full Tilt afloat.
* Send your memories, stories, artworks, and photos of or inspired by Justin to justininmemoriam at gmail.com. We will be compiling the stories, photos, memories, artworks into a book for Ann and the kids. If possible, title your email “contribution” to help us manage the inbox.
* Email justininmemoriam at gmail.com to offer any practical support you would like – either with your ideas for support you’d like to offer or an open offer for whatever Ann may need. Ann’s friends will be monitoring this inbox and will connect with Ann to see what kinds of supports are needed as time goes on. If possible, please title your email “support” to help us manage the inbox.
* Continue to visit Full Tilt when you can. Every scoop you enjoy, every round of pinball, and every beer you share with a friend helps keep Justin’s family and employees going.
* Hug your people and tell them you love them.
* Consider ways you can support your community. Justin’s store, his heart, and his time were open for those who needed him. Our communities are better when we are community builders.
* Get CPR certified. Ann was able to save Justin’s life the night of his heart attack because she knew how to perform CPR. A couple of hours of your time could save a life. cpr.heart.org/en or redcross.org

We will share more information as services are planned and needs are realized.

Thank you all for your love and support, for all you’ve done this past month and all you will continue to do to help hold Justin’s family, friends, Full Tilt family and community close. We all wish Justin were here to hug each and every one of you.

Toward the request for people to “continue visiting Full Tilt” – which opened in downtown White Center in 2008 – they’re open today.

Thanks for sharing, Jack. What a lovely story to share about your relationship with Justin and Full Tilt. We have been there many times after a visit to Proletariat Pizza. It sounds so like you to share how you made your ice cream and to set him up with possible suppliers. He took that gift of knowledge and he and Ann put their own spin on it. Kudos to all of you. Thanks for showing all of us how community building works.

Jack that is an awesome share. I actually think that is the truth of old school West Seattle where there is no competition just various choices and the mentoring in our community from both your family and his is outstanding. It is a sad loss indeed and my heart goes out to his wife kids and family and friends. Gone too soon!

So sad! I’ve been to his ice cream shop every now and then when he was there.  He was so young.  My condolences to his family and may he rest in peace.

Oh I’m so sorry. I didn’t know Justin and was only an occasional visitor to the shop. But I know this is a huge loss for the community and to his family.

justin was a visionary!..,in the sense of starting full tilt and also in the sense how the infusion of additional businesses on the main drag of white center would revitalize the area and attract patrons.this is such sad news. i hope the family feels the community love and that full tilt survives to carry on justin’s amazing legacy.

Deeply saddened for this family. He looks like a really fun loving person.

Breaking my decades long silence on here (I was one of the original forum posters on WS Blog). When Justin first opened Full Tilt, I was one of his detractors and made a statement at the time “If Full Tilt lasts a year I’ll buy you and Ann a beer and apologize to your face”.Justin made sure that I’d “eat crow” and made sure that I made good on my commitment at Proletariat Pizza one night. I was happy to do so.Despite the comment, my family and I  made it a point to frequent the Full Tilt White Center location and occasionally ventures to some of the other locations through the years. Each time, always asking for Justin to say “Hi” and chat it up.We both shared a love for music, which and eventually brought us several times while we lived in West Seattle. While I left Seattle in 2017, I didn’t lose touch with Justin. We messaged each other through the years and as recent as December. He probably never knew it, each time I took a biz trip back to Seattle, I’d stop by the WC location hoping to see him…I missed him in July of last year. What Justin and Ann built has been amazing. What they contributed to the local community has been amazing. That’s because Justin (and Ann) are amazing.I’ll miss you man!!Jon…aka WSTheHouse

My child did a skate camp with their daughter Ruby last summer. I didn’t know who they were then but I met them after camp one day when they brought ice cream pops for all the kids. They seemed like super nice and generous people. My heart goes out to his family.

I lived in White Center only a couple of blocks away when Justin and Ann first opened Full Tilt.  My wife, our two children and I would walk to Full Tilt often and hang out eating ice cream, playing pinball and talking to Justin and Ann about the wonder of being a parent and I remember when they told us they were planning on becoming parents themselves.  My daughter remembers Justin making her a custom ice cream flavor for her birthday and I remember talking Justin into making licorice ice cream for me even though he hated it.  What a devastating loss to the White Center Community and the world at large but more importantly for his lovely family.  My heart is breaking for them.  I hope wherever you are there is mexican chocolate, ube ice cream, coconut paletas,  and no licorice.  You were one of a kind and I am lucky to have known you and to have called you a friend.

Absolutely devastating to our community, My heart is breaking for his family.

May 2011we moved to WS from North Seattle, just 2 blocks or so from Full Tilt.  We took our then 5 year old on their first “long” bike ride on two wheels for after dinner ice cream to Full Tilt.  We became regulars very easily.  Chatting with Justin and Ann was always a treat, Moss was just a little guy then, they all made us feel so welcome and part of the neighborhood.  We met up with friends and family for special occasion cones  , we’d stop in on a hot summer day, we celebrated our kiddo’s kindergarten graduation with pinball, a rocky road cone, awesome music and a couple buddies.  We moved to CA for work in August of 2012 and have missed our awesome little neighborhood ever since.  We weren’t in White Center for long, but we have wonderful memories of our time there, Justin and fam helped make it memorable and special.  Our hearts go out to Ann, Moss, Ruby and everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing Justin.  Thank you for making the best Rocky Road and for being such  wonderful human.  You will be missed deeply.   The Sigler-Morrill Family

When I was the development director for the White Center Food Bank almost a decade ago, Justin was generous in his support of the food bank, sometimes donating a portion of his proceeds and helping in other ways. I admired him as a deeply good human, and I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I wish his family peace and healing.

  • Helpermonkey March 4, 2024 (9:50 am)

Ann, Moss and Ruby, our hearts are breaking for you. Justin was a good man, and a good friend to everyone. I would argue that there would be no White Center as we know it today if it weren’t for Justin opening Full Tilt in a time when White Center wasn’t as welcoming as it is today. Justin, you will be missed.

  • Ryan March 4, 2024 (11:48 am)

I say rename the White Center main drag on 16th Ave SW to Cline Way !

    • I’m covered in bees March 4, 2024 (9:25 pm)

That is a fantastic idea! I agree that Justin and Ann have done so much for the community and WC would not be WC without him. We had a few chats over the years about this very thing. I’m gutted by this news. So deeply sad for Ann and Moss and Ruby, and for all of us too. Thanks for everything, Justin!

    • Jim March 5, 2024 (12:52 pm)

I imagine getting 16th Ave SW name changed would be a monumental challenge. But we do have a road nearby that has a very utilitarian name that I suspect could be changed relatively easy. SW White Center Cutoff. It is only a block long, but it would be something.

  • Lindsey March 4, 2024 (4:07 pm)

This is so sad. I’m so sorry to his family. He was such a beloved member of the community and just was so welcoming to anybody who came in to get ice cream. What a legend.

  • Jenn Dowell March 5, 2024 (12:22 am)

Justin used to come to Village Green Nursery to collect roses for his ice cream. Then he opened his shop. He made a special batch of The Elvis for my daughter’s 11th and 12th birthday party. I remember when Moss would sit on his shoulders while he and Ann would shop for plants. He was funny and wonderful. He will be so missed. I can hardly believe this is true. His loss leaves a giant gaping hole in our community. Love you Ann
