CRASH UPDATES: Flipped vehicle at 5th & Roxbury; 2 collisions on eastbound bridge; 3-car crash at Olson & Cambridge; SB 99 trouble

(ADDED: Four more crashes since the downpour began – scroll down)

FIRST REPORT, 5TH/ROXBURY CRASH, 1 PM: Big Seattle Fire and Police response is on the way to 5th and Roxbury, for what’s reported as a rollover crash. Passersby are reported to have gotten everyone out of the vehicle. More to come.

1:17 PM: As shown in our photo above, this is on the north side of Roxbury just east of 5th. No serious injuries. Too soon to say what caused it, but a thunderstorm was moving through the area when it happened – and it’s still raining heavily. (2:27 pm – The vehicle has been towed.)

1:48 PM, BRIDGE CRASH: The downpour continues, as do the thunder and lightning. Now there’s a spinout crash on the eastbound bridge, near the Delridge onramp. One lane is reported to be blocked. No one hurt. (2:09 pm – police are blocking the Delridge onramp while working to clear this. 2:26 pm – The ramp has reopened.)

1:54 PM, OLSON/CAMBRIDGE CRASH: Now, police that were at the 5th and Roxbury crash are reporting a multiple-vehicle crash to the east, in the Olson & Cambridge vicinity. At least one person is reported to be hurt. (2:09 pm – three vehicles involved here; they’re calling for tows; 2:26 pm – they’re asking for an SDOT crew to inspect the roadway to see if it’s safe for travel.)

3:02 PM, EASTBOUND BRIDGE AGAIN: Now a two-vehicle collision involving a Metro bus is reported on the eastbound bridge near the Delridge onramp. (3:25 pm – this is “taking up 2 1/2 lanes,” per police radio transmissions, and there’s possible jersey-barrier damage that will need repairs.)

3:52 PM, SOUTHBOUND 99: Trouble on SB 99, per SDOT:

Another roll over crash? This must be a record…outside of NASCAR.

    • WSB August 14, 2015 (1:25 pm)

No, actually, there have been far fewer in the past year or two than previously, FWIW.

What caused it? I was at the light at 4th. Driving too fast, skidded (or hydroplaned), over corrected, lost control, and flipped over the curb. Car was on fire too. Good to know everyone was OK

  • JC August 14, 2015 (1:41 pm)

I’m guessing the person was going to fast for the conditions.

We were driving by right after it happened and the people were still climbing out of the vehicle, looked to be 4 or 5 people maybe???
This corner/curve of Roxbury is notorious for roll overs…way too many and most times it is from going too fast for the curve.
    Glad no one was injured.

  • Big Al August 14, 2015 (2:31 pm)

People need to slow down around this particular curve, especially when it rains. There are way too many accidents in this spot.

Is there something wrong on 99 coming toward West Seattle?

    • WSB August 14, 2015 (3:50 pm)

AA, yes, something on SB 99, will be adding that shortly.

Waited at the Columbia St bus stop for 56/57 for over 45 minutes. Saw lots of fire and police vehicles getting on SB 99. 99 SB is a parking lot from Columbia St

SB 99 crawling because of accident S of bridge. NB was closed at 1st. AVOID.

  • vanessa August 14, 2015 (4:04 pm)

Roll on over to West Seattle. Not.

  • Casey August 14, 2015 (4:04 pm)

The first rain in a long time washes off all the oil from the road making it a slick dangerous mess. Duh.

  • Frank E August 14, 2015 (4:35 pm)

It’s complete pandemonium out there! Just got home from Bellevue in Delridge… staying put!

  • Dale August 14, 2015 (4:47 pm)

Traffic sbound on Elliott backed to Ballard. Gridlock on all side streets. Parked the car and walked to Pub for relaxation. Dinner.

  • sam-c August 14, 2015 (4:49 pm)

That was painful. took 2 hours to get from 130th/ Aurora to West Seattle. I think all the new recent transplants and out of practice Seattle-ites seem to have forgotten how to drive in the rain.

I hiked to the Water Taxi to avoid the traffic. Got soaked but it appears to be well worth the trip. The beauty of living in Admiral!

    Casey
I live near the Charlestown hill (between 46th and 47th) so cars are having a hard time getting up the hill!

  • JanS August 14, 2015 (5:23 pm)

sam-c…baffling, isn’t it? It’s raining, for goodness sake…slow down ! Even going 5 miles an hour slower will help.

  • water taxi rider August 14, 2015 (5:45 pm)

I’m on the water taxi but it wasn’t a time saver. Traffic on the viaduct is moving slow and steady. According to On Bus Away WS buses are running 20 minutes late.

  • jetcitydude August 14, 2015 (5:56 pm)

It doesn’t matter what time of the day you get on the road anymore, traffic is out of control in Seattle.

  • puzzled August 14, 2015 (6:29 pm)

We were driving west bound on Roxbury by the Safeway on 26th SW and what at 1st I thought was white paint spilled on the road but when the car next to us took off from the light it bubbled up like dish soap as they drove…what the heck was that on the road???

  • Water taxi fan August 14, 2015 (7:32 pm)

Thanks for the heads up on traffic WSB. I also re-routed from the bus to the water taxi to avoid the mess. It was awesome and surprisingly convenient due to the little water taxi shuttle bus.

People are just so showy around here. Is it really that hard to lose control with some dignity?

Sorry, comment time is over.
