West Seattle Crime Watch: 3 break-ins, and some advice

Three break-in reports to share tonight – one at a home, two involving cars – read on:

From D:

I returned home (Thursday night) after work to find our back door kicked in. We live in the 5900 block of 49th Ave SW [map]. The thieves swiped electronics, but nothing else. Thanks to the SPD officers who responded.. They were both great. The believe it was probably a daylight burglary that more than likely involved someone knocking on the door and busting in when no one answered. Please be on the lookout for any strange cars or trucks in the alleyways. The violation is always worse than the actual crime itself.

Since our first note from D, a little more followup: He talked to his neighbors – “no one saw or heard anything.” But just in case it happens to you, he adds, “The police made a suggestion to keep a spreadsheet of all your valuables, their make, dollar value, and serial numbers.. Makes them easier to track if they show up at a pawn shop.”

Now, the two car incidents. First, from Andrea:

I just wanted to inform you that early (today), around 1:00 am on the 9400 block of 24th Ave SW [map], someone rifled through my car which was parked in my driveway (about 4 ft from my roommate’s room in my house). He heard my doors opening and closing on both sides of my car and saw two suspects walking away from my car after he went to investigate what was happening and then after he came out the suspects began to run down the street. I promptly called 911 after he told me what he saw and an officer showed up at my door to investigate the issue within 5 minutes. So far all that I have found stolen was a work laptop and docking station, valued about $700 total. Thank goodness I didn’t have anything else of value in my car.

And from Jennie:

I’m just sharing that my car window was smashed in the park and ride under the bridge sometime yesterday. There was smashed glass all over the pavement, so it looked like my car was not the only one affected. My car was gone through but the only thing they took was a ziplock of quarters ($5-$10).

I started a thread last night in the forums about our home being burglarized on Tuesday night. We are not living there thankfully but had it on the market. Our home was on the corner of Beach Drive and Chilberg. We believe it was premeditated regarding the size of the items that were taken. They broke in through a basement window not through the key left in the lock box on the door. It is beyond frustrating. I hope these jerks get caught.

This seems to be the same guy that others have reported over the last few months. The key is kicking in the back door. Did he take a few of your CD’s but not all of them? When are the police going to take this seriously. They may be nice to you once it happens, but they need to PREVENT this guy from future entries.

Cathy…do you have any realistic words of wisdom for the police on exactly how they can prevent criminals from committing burglaries??

I for one would like to know…as I am sure the police would…

dkg28—found your response logical yet FUNNY…

Guess I’ll never understand why “someone” thinks it’s ok to take the other guys “stuff” … We work hard to get what little we have and someone comes in and takes it. Sure the police come and check things out, but be realistic, I’ve never known anyone who got their “stuff” back yet! How can anyone check all the pawn shops … AND are they even being taken to pawn shops, maybe the theif “gifts” them to family members or sells to friends! I’ve had things stolen twice both times the night before Mothers Day!!! Hope their mother liked their stolen jewelry and 50 lb. cement fox!!!

Realistically, sometimes the police do catch people, and/ or get tips and end up with a hoard of stuff including electronics.
Wasn’t there a shopping cart full of ’em found on someone’s carport not too long ago?
More often than not, the stuff goes unclaimed because they can’t match owners to valuables. If you’ve recorded and noted the serial numbers of yours, you do have half a chance at getting things back.

Sure, unlikely, but it does happen. If I had any valuables, and cared if they were taken, I’d be sure to spreadsheet them. Better yet, include a photo inventory.

and, please, don’t leave anything that you value in your car. Just a reminder :)

  • LovingWS March 27, 2010 (4:01 pm)

Well, just left where I’m sitting(not my house) to take a walk in the park….

Found the neighbor’s car rifled through, window busted. Near the bottom of Thistle St. stairs near Lincoln park. Unfortunately, I don’t think they’ve been home yet to find out their car’s been damaged. I figure it was last night, but never heard anything.

Looks like there was a hamper type thing with clothes and such in back.

Hopefully there wasn’t anything valuable in there….. lesson being, don’t even leave something in you car that LOOKS like it can contain something of value.

    • WSB March 27, 2010 (4:04 pm)

Sorry to hear it. Police say don’t even leave ANYTHING in your car, period. And remember not to leave hints of valuables – like suction cups suggesting a GPS.

Best defense against burglars? A dog. Small or large they make enough noise to deter criminals who would otherwise rather chose a “quiet”, unoccupied house.

This has been echoed by a few SPD officers that I know.

Be on the lookout for vandals. I live on 45th AVE half a block away from James Madison. Saturday at 2:30AM I heard kids outside. I put on my glasses and watched 3 girls in their Pajamas take a small baseball bat and break my friends front car window. The girls laughed and then took a picture of the damage with their cell phone. I confronted the girls and called 911. The vandals sprinted around a corner and into their house. I’m not for sure where they live, but I know it’s within walking distance of James Madison. They look young and possibly Madison students. If you know anyone who had a sleep over with 2 of their friends, within walking distance of Madison. that are young girls wearing Pajamas on Friday night it could be them. They took a picture of the damage with their cell phone. The pictures could be on myspace. Parents watch your kids and see their myspace page and cell phone pictures. Don’t assume they are not doing bad things behind your back. If they come back I’ll make sure the cops get them next time.

Not sure if this was a hit and run, or attempted break-in, but I live in the 3800 block of 19th SW, and woke to my car alarm this Sunday around 3 AM. I didn’t see a car or anyone near my car. Went out this morning to see that part of my plastic grill was smashed, and the hood is not completely secure. There look to be some scratches on the bumper, but as it’s an older car, I couldn’t say if they were new. I think it’s mostly likely that someone backed up, the alarm went off, and they kept going.

My house was broken into Thurs. 3/25 during the day. Thieves stole electronics (laptops, ipod + doc, cameras). On 9th SW near Elmgrove. MY LARGE BARKING DOG WAS IN THE HOUSE THE WHOLE TIME. Now I’m going to pay for a security system.

  • lauren March 29, 2010 (2:36 pm)

Ben, so sorry to hear what happened to you. My house on 9th/Barton was broken into on 3/10 during the day and only small electronics/cameras were taken as well (tho they ransacked the hell out of the whole house). The cops were able to get good prints but unfortunately no match as they suspect it was done by juveniles with no record yet (they also mentioned that there has been an increase in home-burglaries in the Highland Park area). I now have an alarm system and am thinking of getting a dog, though sadly it doesn’t sound like that helped in your case. To say that I hope they catch these punks soon would be an understatement. Take care and good luck…

Sorry to hear about your break-in. One of the best ways to defend your home is with a alarm system. Since the increase in crime as of late, we’ve been working with several home owners in W Seattle on installing security systems. Sometimes these criminals come back to your home after you’ve recieved the insurance money, and rob you again. So it’s a good idea to get an alarm.

We are local in West Seattle and we are a sponsor on the blog. It really doesn’t cost much to protect your home. I’d recommend getting one installed. Please contact me for details at ksawka@freedomsystemsinc.com or 206-229-8075

Barking dogs, neighborhood watch, alarm systems, police, fingerprints … yet the last crime stats still showed 50-60 residential break-ins a month in West Seattle … that’s 700+ homes per year.

The bad guys are winning because we’re not doing what’s required to stop them.

What our community needs is evidence. Maybe it’s time for homeowners to start putting up surveillance cams and taking the kinds of pictures that put criminals in jail. Anybody know where to find a lot of security cam systems at a good price? Anyone with security cams installed who has advice for the rest of us?

  • Dave March 30, 2010 (10:21 am)

Ben, sooo sorry to hear you got robbed with a big barking dog in the house. That really makes me wonder if the thieves knew your dog. Maybe they met the dog before on the street or in your yard and knew his/her name and real demeanor. I worry about this in my hood. I have some shady neighborhood kids that live near me and their friends are even more hoodlum like.

I have a dog that snarls, barks and looks like she would bite your head off if you dare broke in but I am not so sure. She is as sweet as pie to those who know her and others that are nice to her.

  • Keith Sawka March 30, 2010 (1:07 pm)

@ wsgal: Yes we install video surveillance systems for a good price :)

We have several building and homes that are finding it useful after a break-in or arson. That combined with an alarm is the best defense. It’s also possible to view your cameras while away from home via a computer. You can track any unusual movement.

Contact me offline and I’d be happy to get you a quote or answer any questions. Thanks. ksawka@freedomsystemsinc.com – 206-229-8075
