Blessing of the Animals: 3 events coming up in West Seattle

blessingdog.jpg

Again this fall, three “Blessing of the Animals” events are scheduled in West Seattle – in case you haven’t seen them on the Events calendar yet, we’re mentioning them here since they’re just a little more than a week away: Providence Mount St. Vincent, 10:30 am October 3rd (meet in the front lobby); Alki UCC, special service 10 am October 4th (sanctuary); St. John the Baptist, noon October 4th in the nearby West Seattle High School parking lot. (Photo above is from St. John’s event last year.) All are open to any and all pets and their owners. Blessings are scheduled in many places around the country/world in honor of the feast day for St. Francis of Assisi (patron saint of animals), which is Oct. 4th this year.

A lovely and kind day to think of our fluffy, fuzzy, or feathery friends!

Indeed! Those of us who know the blessing of having a companion animal are already there :)

I love this day. In San Francisco the day of blessing at St. Francis of Assisi church was always a huge deal. So much of the community came out. I didn’t know it was happening here. Thank you for the info.

I am no photographer – but that is indeed my favorite of the hundreds of photos I took last year alone. The Franciscan monk and the enthralled retriever. – TR

This is the only day of the year I go to church, usually the service up at St Marks. People bring chickens, guinea pigs, rats, parrots; I wish it was like NYC where they parade elephants, camels and monkeys into St John the Divine.

I went to the one at St. John the Baptist last year. It is a lovely community celebration and a Franciscan Friar comes to do the blessings – it’s fun to see so many neighbors’ cute pets in one place too!

Just found out the monk in my photo from last year, Nicholas Kis, died two months ago. RIP. http://www.osffranciscans.com/brothers.htm

Funny thing is it’s a fairly standard theological belief that animals lack a soul, and when they die they just die. Although that means no eternal punishment it also means no eternal reward too.

And yet in pictures like this the animal seems more noble than some people who have full confidence in their own righteousness.

Sorry, comment time is over.
