While I agree in concept (don’t feed the trolls) I also think many of us feel defensive about protecting TR’s space, since she and Patrick work so hard to make it safe and good for the benefit of so many. Just hearing that they have had to file harassment orders because of their work and to protect themselves, really puts into perspective how crazy this world is and how they work so hard to stay above the fray. Thank you WSB.

    kgdlg..

this is our space too :)

if we use it responsibly, hopefully it won’t become such a burden that TR and Patrick are tempted to toss us to the curb next time they are harassed over a perceived insult in the forum.

they have been champs keeping it both open and accessible

Yes, it’s well to remember that this forum is “peripheral” to the blog. I’ve seen a similar forum bring down a website (caused loss of sponsorship), which was extremely painful for all concerned. Let’s not let it happen here.

    seaopgal..

i am choosing to read your post as call to responsibility for forum posters

rather than a threat that WSB could lose it’s sponsors if it doesn’t ______________ :)

before you tear me a new one :)

i really am assuming that your post was a call to responsible behavior.. not a threat

but i want to point out how easily posts can be misinterpreted.

that misinterpretation can be the fatal human flaw in all communication… but is even more likely in forums like these.

“problem” forums are often created when reader(s) interpret posts in ways that the OP never intended and respond personally to perceived insults… resulting in flaming wars.

unfortunately there is no way that i know of to eliminate this kind of reader error…

all we can do is have patience and maintain civility with one another

and hope that whatever is causing people to react so negatively to the slightest provocation will pass.

    it generally does.

while flaming wars on forums can concern sponsors..

the sense of community created by a well run forum attracts sponsors

it’s a fine line and i think TR and Patrick walk it well

I took seopgal’s note the same way you did JoB, a call to be responsible, which is always a good reminder.

It can be hard to assume goodwill when opinions on a given topic are diametrically opposed. And when you toss in some people’s tendency for sarcasm (which RARELY translates well on posts – and yes, I’m referring to myself), then you have a high potential for flame wars.

But having said that, and even with our occasional flare ups here, this space tends to keep it inside the guardrails almost all the time. And that speaks volumes for our participants.

We may not always have controversial topics running 24/7 but that’s not necessarily a bad thing for anyone, much less our gracious hosts.

Here’s to keeping a vibrant, respectful and informative environment going forward.

    My two cents:

I was once editor of a small local newspaper and I was very glad to get out of it after a few years. The vitriol of some individuals (and one organization) made the endeavor seem a waste of time.

I tried my best to make the publication fair, factual and entertaining. But where I saw balance, others saw favoritism or even corruption.

So, TR, my hat is off to you as I know that this is a tough line of business. Your dedication and hard work does show through.

Don’t let the bastards get you down.

I have occasionally read here, and on at least two other online Forums that I have been a regular participant in over the years, comments from Site Owner/Admin/Mod about some of the “hate mail” they get from apparent readers.

On at least one of those other Sites, other participants have chimed in with their similar stories of abuse from readers/participants, on Sites that they have run.

These other two Sites, as is the case here on WSB, also have a few very basic, simple, common rules, that pretty much boil down to being respectful of others.

Something that some people are not aware of, and perhaps even those of us that are, forget, is that we don’t always know what goes on “behind the scenes”.

Good point, Mike. It’s gotta’ be tough to endure that crap even when you can rationalize it as being inappropriate and should be disregarded as the flotsam and jetsom that it truly is. Just cuz it comes with the territory doesn’t mean it’s easy to dismiss.

    Spot on, wakeflood.

One of my biggest peeves, in regards to a business, career, or job a person chooses to get into, and they end up being verbally, or otherwise abused, are the people who say; “…well, you chose that business/career…”, basically saying; “….if you can’t stand the heat…..”

I don’t believe many people would condone physical abuse, why condone verbal, or any other form of abuse?

Maybe the OP is the one posting all the garbled spam threads! We’re destroying their livelihood of posting spam by reporting all those threads!
