manhattan93MemberWe just find out that our kid is in the 4th of wait list at Pathfinder. For the parents with the kids who are assigned to Pathfinder, but won’t attend this school….PLEASE PLEASE do inform the Enrollment Department at Seattle Public School. It will mean a huge thing for us to plan the next step ahead . Thank you so much West Seattle Parents !

kayoParticipantSecond that! We are first on the waitlist there for first grade. I just want to know before school starts as my worst case scenario would be to start my kid at her current school and then have to change after school starts. I would rather just stay if this scenario came up because it would be really hard on her.
Good luck to all my fellow waitlisted families!

wsmama3ParticipantWe were 8th on the K list last year. Moved to 9th, then back to 8th.
Hope there is more movement this year for your families! :)

SybilParticipantI currently have a kindergartner at Pathfinder and am trying to get my older daughter in to 3rd grade, her first foray in to public school. We are first on the wait list and were assigned to our over-crowded reference school. Clearly I fully support this plea!

manhattan93MemberWe got a call 2 weeks ago from Seattle Public School about an opening at Pathfinder. Finally we got it! Thanks to the parents that informed the SPS before the school starts. It means a lot to us!

kayoParticipantYay for you! That is wonderful news! We are still first on the waitlist for first grade there and I am very frustrated that we haven’t heard anything. If you are not attending first grade at Pathfinder, please tell SPS. I can’t believe we have two weeks to go and still don’t know what will happen. It sucks to be in limbo.

2 Much WhineParticipant@kayo, technically you are not in limbo. Your kid is assigned to a school. It’s just not the one you want. Plan for the school that he/she is assigned to and if you’re lucky enough to get into Pathfinder then be thankful even if they tell you the night before school starts, right? To the person that is concerned that they’ll get into Pathfinder after schools starts – don’t worry. From my experience, once a kid attends even an hour of school where they are assigned they will not be moved to the school they desire. Rules can change (and perhaps they have) but we even kept our kid out of school for 3 days hoping to get into a closer school (it didn’t happen). Ultimately we were very pleased with the school she attended despite our initial objections. It’s tough but kids are resilient and they do survive and some actually thrive.

sbreParticipantAs a school bus driver who has delivered west Seattle kids to Pathfinder for the past 5 years (since before the location change), I beg you parents to PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE use the bus if you are fortunate enough to be assigned to one. Also worth noting; the big buses utilize the first of the two parking lots as do many of the school staff, thus those parking spaces are generally filled early so you most likely won’t find one there. We roll around the perimeter to drop-off and pick-up, so if you can avoid entering that parking lot that will be very helpful. And if you park too close to the curb of the entrance to this parking lot then we won’t have the clearance needed to negotiate the turn with our 40 feet of metal.
With the way the streets are to get in to and out of the school, having hundreds of cars dropping off one or two kids every morning/afternoon REALLY clogs up the process.
As usually happens once or twice a school-year there is a fender bender between a big yellow and mom’s car which will bring traffic to a stand-still for quite a long time.
Of course it’s important to a majority of families to see your child walk into school on the first day, taking photos and all, and there are those littler ones that may require the first week or so of mom or dad’s comfort to make this transition, but PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, utilize us every day you can.
You (we all) pay for the service, and the space your child(ren) take up on the road is a LOT less in our limo than in yours.
If you must/will drive, please be patient with the buses and let us in and out ahead of you if you can. Since Pathfinder is the earliest school start-time, any time we sit waiting to get in and then out greatly effects how late we’ll be to the subsequent routes we service.
Obviously patience is key, and during the first week of so a LOT of keys will be needed by all.
Even though I’m 53 I still get very excited about the first day of school, to see all the kids and make new friends.
I truly love my job and getting to know all those who ride our bus, they may be your children but they’re my little darlings!!!

HalynParticipantActually, 2 Much Whine, that’s not always the case–my child attended a full day at an assigned school, I got a phone call at lunch time telling me to send her to her chosen school the next day. She was perfectly fine and happy, after a day or two of grumbling that the first school had better playground equipment. The only downside was that I had to buy two sets of school supplies. I was unaware that Seattle schools pool the purchased supplies and use them for the whole class, so after sending my daughter to day one of school with a backpack full of crayons, paper, glue sticks, tissues, etc., I had to re-buy all of it that night to send it to the new school!

kayoParticipantSo there is hope! Thanks Halyn! I also know of people who have gotten in after the first day of school so I know there is still a possibility at this point.

BonnieParticipantAnother thing about Pathfinder on the first day of school is that everybody is dropping their kids off and it is Wednesday. That is garbage day for the area there. Oh my goodness, the backup due to the garbage trucks were unreal last year. Be prepared for that.

2 Much WhineParticipantThanks for the reminder. We were trying to get into a school in the middle of the school year now that I think about it. That’s when the rule affected us. Good luck everyone!

luckymom30ParticipantAnd a safety issue the first day of school.
