charlabobParticipantI’ve hoped for a long time to see discussions of movies and books and television in these forums, even though they aren’t specific to West Seattle — hey, they’re things people in West Seattle are doing, right? The folks here are so interesting and involved and the discussions would just be fun.
But since many forums have been talking recently about gratuitous violence and trolls with mental issues, I have to recommend a film that everyone should see — available on netflix and elsewhere.
It’s called: He Was a Quiet Man, stars Christian Slater as a nobody who becomes somebody in a horrible way. It’s a low budget somewhat arty little piece — that explains without excusing how some among us get to a place of no return.
And how can you resist a movie with talking fish to expedite the plot? Even my cats watched.

AnonymousInactivecharlabob – I just watched that film the other night. While it wasn’t my favorite film, I thought it was interesting. It was an interesting topic to do a film about. And very fitting that you would mention that particular film in light of recent events on this forum! Lol!
I am very excited for the movie, “Into The Wild” to come out on video. I did not see it in the theater, but I read the book and it was a great book.

JoBParticipanti wouldn’t normally choose a pic with talking fish .. but i will try it if you say so…
March 5, 2008 at 11:45 pm #616722
charlabobParticipantNR, bingo — that’s exactly why I mentioned it — I watched it and then I read the day’s thread and I said something like “omigod”.
Is “Into the Wild” the Sean Penn produced outdoor movie? I hadn’t heard of it until the recent spate of ads, but I’ll look for it on your recommendation.
JoB — I figured the talking fish would be a hook for some people (I’m baaaad) and some others would watch in spite of them. They do kind of grow on you, and when you watch the director’s notes, you see their importance — for one thing, the movie would be much longer without them.
March 5, 2008 at 11:47 pm #616723
barmargiaMembercharlabob, yes into the wild is the sean penn movie. If I’m not mistaken it was from the book, and it was a great book
March 5, 2008 at 11:53 pm #616724
KayleighMemberI can second the recommendation for “Into the Wild”, my favorite film from last year. The soundtrack and beautiful scenery alone are worth the price of admission. Hal Holbrook will break your heart.

AnonymousInactiveComing out on video on March 9th, I think. Can’t wait!
March 6, 2008 at 12:23 am #616726
ALSParticipantOn a more superficial note… I am so excited for the Sex and the City movie to come out at the end of May! I’m sure it will be nowhere near as good as the series, but undoubtedly entertaining nonetheless!
March 6, 2008 at 12:26 am #616727
andreaParticipantI second the excitment for the Sex and the City movie! Thats the only series that as an adult I can sit down and watch any episode at any point and still be thoroughly entertained.
March 6, 2008 at 12:31 am #616728
AnonymousInactiveAgreed! I was on medical leave from work a while back and ended up renting every single episode. Needless to say, by the end, my husband was hooked. That was a great show.

karenParticipantSpeaking of fish, I think one of my all time favorites is A Fish Called Wanda.
March 7, 2008 at 5:09 pm #616730
charlabobParticipantWow–both the charla and the bob are great fans of Sex and the City — when they had retrospectives, we realized we hadn’t missed a single one. I suspect we weren’t their original demographic, but a girl can dream. And the bob was in love with Miranda — oops.
Fish is one of my favorites too, Karen.
Probably my alltime favorite movie (and I could say “our” here) is Brazil. We have to watch it at least once every year and, sadly, every year it gets more relevant.
BTW, I rewatched Quiet Man last night because Bob hadn’t seen it. I’m even more blown away by it. So was he. It was supposedly released in Seattle and NY in January, so they must have expected it to be a hit here and it certainly was in our little corner of west seattle.

charlabobParticipantI want to thank you guys for telling me about Into the Wild. We’re watching it now and it is a definite winner. Beautiful and, because I know how it ends, depressing. Sort of like life — beautiful, I know how it ends, so depressing :-)
I would have skipped right over it if it weren’t for you-all.
We should plan a Sex and The City The Movie viewing party or movie date. We need more fun.
Another must-see that everyone but me has probably seen: An American Gangster. I’m getting really fond of these true stories.
(New York Magazine had a great article where the two main characters, in real life, were interviewed together. Now I just have to meet them….along with Denzell, of course — any excuse.)
Back to our movie. Again, thank you!
April 11, 2008 at 3:53 am #616732
cjboffoliParticipantAny movie that is good enough for cats is good enough for me.
April 11, 2008 at 4:08 am #616733
AnonymousInactiveDidn’t love American Gangster. The movie Gone Baby Gone was great! I would highly recommend that one!
Also, for documentary fans, the documentary about young artist Marla Olmstead was awesome. Can’t remember the name of it. Worth renting.
April 11, 2008 at 4:32 am #616734
andreaParticipantohhh I agree NR, Gone Baby Gone was so good! I had no idea what it was going to be about, and was totally blown away by it…and I am all in for a Sex in the City movie watching party!
April 11, 2008 at 4:55 am #616735
cjboffoliParticipantNewResident: You should read the New York Magazine article on which American Gangster was based. It is fascinating.
The excellent documentary about Marla Olmstead is called “My Kid Could Paint That.”
April 11, 2008 at 5:50 am #616736
charlabobParticipantWell, we just finished watching Into the Wild and we’re both still in tears. It is just stunning. Thank you all again.
We’ll definitely check out Gone Baby Gone — I’m a sucker for realistic lower class Boston settings and Dennis Lehane.
Looks like Sex and the City is due out around Memorial day — an excellent way to start the summer. Sounds like a good excuse for a forum members “day of hedonistic pleasure with no redeeming social significance and lots of popcorn.” Next stop — Rat City Rollergirls
April 11, 2008 at 5:55 am #616737
AnonymousInactivecjboffoli – since you watched that documentary, what do you think? They left it open and I’m curious what your opinion is. My guy and I have differing ones.
April 11, 2008 at 12:12 pm #616738
KayleighMemberCharla, I liked American Gangster. Weird watching Denzell be a bad guy, but he manages to make the guy almost sympathetic.
I also liked “Talk to Me” with Don Cheadle as the African American radio host. Oh, and “No Country for Old Men” was excellent.
(I can’t stand Sex in the City or anything in that genre…give me a weird quirky indy film any day!)
Along those lines, “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead” is excellent too. Disturbing. But I love pretty much anything with Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
April 11, 2008 at 2:09 pm #616739
charlabobParticipantThanks, KL — the most amazing thing about American Gangster is that it’s a true story…I’ll definitely look into the others on your list.
The b and I were a little surprised at how much we liked Sex and the City — overall, I’m a sucker for good writing, good acting, and surprises. It had them. (And I’m also a sucker for Chris Noth.)
And, if you want to “roll” you own??? Check out Fantasy Moguls — http://www.imdb.com/ri/MOGUL_HP/MID_BUCKET/74568/http://www.fantasymoguls.com/
April 11, 2008 at 2:50 pm #616740
KayleighMemberThat fantasy site was fun and led me to be excited about “88 Minutes” with Al Pacino.!
April 11, 2008 at 4:56 pm #616741
AnonymousInactiveKayleigh – I LOVE Phillip Seymour Hoffman! We usually will rent anything that he is in, so I’m gonna have to check that one out.
I will second the suggestion for “No Country For Old Men”. I read the book and could not finish it. I’m not sure why. It’s interesting, the style he writes, because he doesn’t use punctuation, however, that’s not why I didn’t finish it. It just didn’t grab me. But I really enjoyed the movie. I thought Tommy Lee Jones should have been nominated (I don’t think he was), he was excellent.
April 11, 2008 at 5:11 pm #616742
ErikParticipantCharla –
I haven’t seen ‘Brazil’ in awhile, but did see it when it first came out in the mid 80’s. It too is one of my all-time favs…don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
April 11, 2008 at 5:28 pm #616743
WSMomParticipantI just can’t watch movies like “American Gangster”. All the killing and beating just hurts my soul. I try to close my eyes during the bad parts but the sounds are too much for me to bear. I just don’t understand how folks can watch tortuous images and not feel sick inside. My husband says “Braveheart” pretty much ruined me for rated R movies.
So, given my personal limitations, what movies have I seen lately? I guess you’d call them chick flicks…
1. Across the Universe – love the movie and the CD
2. La Vie en Rose – exceptional
3. Jane Austin Book Club – easy going story and likable characters
4. Juno – delightful and quirky story
5. Dan in Real Life – good story, how does Juliet Binoche stay so beautiful??
6. Michael Clayton – something my husband and I could both enjoy
7. Waitress – pies made me hungrey, likable characters
I have Kite Runner waiting for me in the DVD player. I found the book very compelling and am excited to see the movie (little worried about the rape scene).
Was at Costco yesterday and purchased discounted movie tickets so my love and I can have a date night tonight. I’d like to see “The Other Bolyn Girl” because I LOVED the book, but the compromise movie will probably be “Leatherheads”, which sounds enjoyable as I like George Clooney and Jim Krazinski.
