So, our house still has its original garage door–er, doors. See, it’s a bi-fold door and regular hinged door pieced together to cover the garage opening. The door does not open upward onto a track.

    Like this, but much uglier:

Has anyone had this setup replaced with a regular door? I’m wondering how much this might cost, since I assume a fair amount more labor is involved (removing old doors and hardware and installing tracks for the new door). We will not be installing an electric opener yet, since we need to redo electrical beforehand.

I have an estimate set up with Distribudoors later this week, but am hoping for a ballpark figure from someone who’s been there, done that. ;)

Don’t know if you have Angies List, but the top five on there are (the number indicates number reviews from west seattle folks):

    Sound Door Services (25)

    Rainer Garage Door (7)

    Distribudoors (5)

    Precision Garage Door service (1)

The Door Works/Rod’s Door Repair (2)

All of these companies are “A” rated and have discounts for people who are Angies List members. For something like this, the discount might pay for the membership to Angies list. I know it did for me after putting on a new roof this year.

Thanks, b-squared! I did sign up for Angie’s List a couple months back, so I saw those. I balked at the price at first (which really isn’t that bad), but after getting an email with a 40% off discount code and porting the purchase through ebates.com (27.5% cash back), plus using a rewards credit card, I think the net cost of the membership was about $17. :-D

I’m just nervous that this is going to cost way more than it would to replace a standard garage door. Sigh. It needs to be done at some point, though.
