I’ll just come clean and admit it. My family often takes our dollars out of West Seattle. We go to Burien Fred Meyer about once every other week. We stock up on groceries and all other sorts of things.

I simply haven’t been able to find any store in West Seattle that has the selection and prices to touch Fred Meyer. Sure, the sale prices at QFC, Safeway, or Thriftway can be good, but we don’t have the time or flexibility to shop only the specials. And the Westwood Target groceries seem to be quite expensive.

I think it’s lousy to take our dollars out of West Seattle. I have to spend time and gas money to get there, and Burien gets the city portion of the sales tax. But grocery shopping anywhere in West Seattle is at least 30% higher than Burien Fred Meyer unless I’m missing something. Am I the only one making regular trips down to the Burien Fred Meyer to fill the pantry?

We make the trek down to Trader Joes in Burien at least once a week. Can’t wait for the TJs in West Seattle to open!

Three years ago I was robbed inside the Burien Fred Meyer and the store/management did NOTHING to help me so I haven’t been back since.

I live in senior apartments and our van occassionally takes us to FM. Most just love going out somewhere different, having the opportunity to browse around and wide variety of merchandice in one place. West Seattle is sort of left out of the shopping zone. Small specialty shops don’t fill everyone’s needs or pocketbooks, even though thery’re nice and local owned.

Price wise–Thriftway gouges us daily and its our closest grocery store. Don’t know how they get away charging prices they do.

absolutely love Fred Meyer; worked at the one in Ballard couple years ago during holidays; one stop shopping and they pay employees well

for food, still doing trip combining up to Queen Anne Trader Joes, or 17th/Madison couple times/month; counting the minutes til ours opens; it’s looking very promising with lots of progress lately

then, next on wish list is a Fred Meyer in West Seattle; I know the perfect spot/”hole”

thanks for reminding me Betty T; Fred Meyer also has a senior discount (10% off) one day at beginning of every month; is it 1st Tuesday?

The 10% discount at FM isn’t on your whole purchase just certain items, we go to Fred Meyer in Burien everyother week too.

I cut their couppys from the Sunday paper. Shop every week. I avoid Safeway and all else in WS is $$ for me.

Probably twice a month for “big shops” to FM in Burien. Usually hit TJ’s down there as well.

Nothing in WS comes close price-wise to FM currently.

It’s no fun when your transportation limited but just glad I don’t have to shop for a family.

Haven’t heard the plans for the “hole” since it was auctioned off. Everybody’s curious.

Diane – FM is promoting additional 10% off for seniors on every Tuesday in November & December too! Ask the cashier for it and be flattered when you’re carded ;)

Oh and yeah, every 2-3 weeks for me. More than Costco, less than the neighborhood grocery stores, and usually for things other than food.

Once a week to the Ballard Fred Meyer. It’s more or less on our commute circuit, so the bean and I go in the early morning before it’s too crowded. The organic produce at Ballard FM is almost always in better shape than any produce at the Burien store.

Still spend plenty of food dollars here in WS at PCC and Thriftway, but Ballard FM is our veggie stock up place. And, Trader Joe’s is just 3 blocks down the street.

We’ve gotten 60.00 off our groceries at FM using our rewards card. The 10% senior discount for 55 and older does not apply to all groceries items and you need to ask teh cashier before they ring up the order. This promotion has been going on for afew years now. And the gas prices at FM are comparable to other stations but you receive points toward your gas at FM.

Right – here’s the “fine print” on senior discount from the newspaper ads…food category is basically private label only. And this is the first time I’ve seen that it excludes anything sold by the pound in produce or meat…huh? Not so great overall. We usually use the various FM % discounts for glamorous items like underwear and socks that don’t have the same restrictions.

I don’t, but maybe I should. An hour shopping alone while the child plays in the playplace is probably worth the drive!

I was hoping that Target’s decision to carry food would mean I could get Fred Meyer-like prices on food without going to Burien. I was wrong about that. While I wouldn’t call Target grocery prices high, it seems like they are definitely higher than Fred Meyer. And Fred Meyer has more selection by far. So for my family it’s been a no-brainer to travel to Fred Meyer once every other week or so. Good selection and good prices all in one store.

I don’t see a Fred Meyer coming to West Seattle. Land is pretty expensive here. You need a huge parking lot or else people won’t come. Anyplace within walking distance of the Junction won’t happen – QFC is owned by the same company and it would kill their sales.

I was just curious if I was the only one getting in my car and driving south 12 miles to buy groceries. Apparently I’m not!
