Should I just chuck my stupid HP printer? We recently moved and when I tried to re install the sucker it won’t load onto our computer. We really aren’t in a financial position to purchase a new computer or have someone come to our home. I know there are some computer smarty pants folks on here. Hoping for some suggestions:

    * When I plug it in it has zeros on the screen where the date normally shows up.

    * I installed new drivers, whatever than means.

    * I tried to start completely over with the disk install. It showed that it was loaded but when it did the set up scan/print thing it won’t print still.

Any ideas? Thanks for any suggestions.

Let me guess. HP AIO (all in one) printer with a cd full of bloatware.

Gimme the model and I can tailor exact instructions for ya.

In most cases, you should look in device manager (and control panel, printers for xp or startbutton “devices and printers” on w7 and see how many of the same printer you have installed. Remove all but one and then try it.

Also. If it has a fax function, often nothing will work correctly or at all until you set the date and time, and enter the phone number you are using to hook up the fax to the phone line.

If this is to complex, call my google voice number at 8010fix or 206 801-0349 and I can look up the model and give you the detail or you can bring it over and I can show you how to set it up.

Even if you bring the computer and printer over and I show you how, it will need to be done again when you get it home. Most have a small battery that keeps the settings for a while but several days of being unplugged will wipe the settings from the printer memory.

If you post the model here, then my response will be searchable for others with the same problem to find.

Sometimes you have to locate and run the hp utility to completely uninstall the massive committee created software installed the first time so as to allow the new install to locate the printer properly. Also many will not install correctly unless the usb cable is unplugged until the installer ask you to plug it in.

These things are complex but not undo-able by the home user if you get steered in the right direction.

Note: if you have a mac I can tell you how to set up the printer there too but usually in SL and Lion you just have to tell it to download the full list of printer drivers from the update server.

Ken-Thank you so much! It is a HP Officejet 4500 Wireless. I don’t have a Mac. I also emailed you. This is much appreciated.
