dawsonctParticipantKen, The Swinery makes a good point on their web site about the hidden costs in the factory meats you purchase from C & C, Costco, et al. Since you have the interest already, why don’t you see what kind of prices they can give you on subprimal cuts from local, humanely raised animals. My guess is, though it WILL be more expensive, you will still save over grocery prices and the quality will blow you away.

saneyMemberon major shopping day:
first i go to Grocery Outlet in Burien-always random items, rarely the same as last time, but GREAT deals
then i head over to trader joes for items that werent at grocery outlet.
then to admiral safeway to complete the list (since there are things that you can only get at a major supermarket-like name brand items that you are used to eating).
about once or twice a month i go to PCC for the specialty items that you can only get there.
about once a month i go to the whole foods on westlake because it is near my work and i like the hot deli for lunch. i usually pick up the faux meat items there that i like because their selection and prices are pretty good for those sorts of things.
the random “pick up after work” items are purchased at admiral safeway because it is on the way home.

JEMParticipantRoxbury Safeway, since it is closest to my house and has a large selection and good prices. Morgan Thriftway, because it is closest to my pub and bf’s house and has a nice atmosphere. And sometimes Trader Joe’s, it isn’t that far but I have to be in the mood for more than a “quick trip”.

BonnieParticipanti go to Roxbury Safeway because of the prices, but they are not always the cheapest. After that I go to QFC and then Trader Joe’s.

rykriteMemberThanks everyone for sharing – I spend way too much time on food so this is helpful and useful to me.
My list:
Trader Joe’s (either Burien or Madison): packaged goods like crackers or pasta, organic dairy, nuts, frozen fish, jarred items like honey or olives, olive and canola oil, maple syrup, vinegars, cleaning supplies, frozen fruit or veggies.
PCC: bulk foods, fruits and veggies, grass fed beef
Thriftway: items I forgot to pick up elsewhere
Husky Deli: ice cream
Swinery: chicken, bacon
Seattle Fish Co.: fish
Farmer’s Market: whatever they have
Costco: organic coffee, frozen wild salmon, big block of Tillamook cheese
C&P Coffee: farm fresh eggs
When QFC opened we got their dungeoness crab on sale – yum! – but haven’t spent much time there. I have never had good luck with Safeway’s food. MetMarket is too expensive for me, though of course it’s lovely there.

JoBParticipantdawsonct…
i avoid the refrigerated stuff at guadalupe because i have purchased too many spoiled items. maybe not enough turnaround.

dawsonctParticipantAre we talking produce? Certainly understand that, but it is my go-to place for crema and Mexican cheeses. Also, when it comes to produce, if you stick with the items more closely associated with Mexican/C. American cuisine, like nopales, jalapenos, cilantro, key limes (and HUGE bags of REAL cinnamon quills, cheap!), I have found the produce to be exceptional, certainly better than Bernie & Boys (B & B’s DO have a good, cheap butcher shop) who tend to cater to a similar community.
I can’t say enough, though, about Guadalupe’s dried chilies for their variety and freshness. If for no other reason, and there are plenty, that makes them stand out.

I like MacPhersons on Beacon Hill, too, especially if you need a lot of some fruit or vegetable for a project. Seems to be more affected by the seasonality of fruit, so don’t expect even a mediocre mid-winter tomato, but when the fresh stuff is in elsewhere it’s just as good there. They may get more flawed stuff out on the floor than QFC, but they more than make up for it in substantially lower prices, and you can pick through it and take the stuff you like. I know it’s not W. Sea., but it’s close and easy to get to, as long as you have a car or motorcycle/scooter. If you need to take a bus it would probably turn it into a 4 hr. excursion. Thanks Metro, a classic case of “you can’t get there from here.”

dawsonctParticipantOkay, I checked and it would take about an hour each way. Still….

swimcatMemberThough I don’t like QFC’s customer service, I have been shopping at the new one this past month because of the $5 coupons and the sale prices. I have saved a ton of money there!
For pantry items, I stock up at Target!!! They are so cheap for canned & frozen veggies, ketchup, cereal, cheese, bacon, etc… I have been doing this for years and am so excited the WV Target has recently expanded their food offerings.
I love Thriftway for special items and their excellent customer service. I wish there was a TJ’s closer for the fun pantry items they have- they generally have great prices too.

insomniacMemberI also wish that there was a local Trader Joe’s. They are absolutely wonderful for many items.

kParticipantJayDee-I agree on the lame grocery stores here in CA. I am so happy to be returning to all the choices we have in West Seattle. The produce here in Southern California is so disappointing. I am amazed how poor it is considering how much is grown here. Can’t wait for my PCC, Met Market and Thriftway!

genehsuParticipantLet’s see… mostly Metro Market and ThriftWay with Farmer’s market on the weekends and occasional forays into Trader Joe’s, PCC, Swinery, Seattle Fish Company, QFC, Target, Costco, Asian groceries in the International District, etc.
In CA, we did a lot of Farmer’s market shopping along with Molly Stone’s, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and the local Asian Groceries. Food around San Francisco was pretty easy to find.
