TheHouseMemberSorry. Couldn’t resist. Just making sure we give opposing viewpoints.
I’m seriously going to eat a filet mignon. Who’s with me now?
Enjoy your carrots and celery.

MargLMemberI’ve totally given up tomatoes and leaf lettuce.
Just discovered flat iron steak at QFC this week. MMMMMMMmmmm!!!

transplantellaParticipantHow bout fricassee of local squirrel? West Seattle has an overabundance the sciurus rodentus. Mighty tasty eating.
June 26, 2008 at 4:45 am #628987
KeithMemberHey, I love squirrels! And the thought of eating one is repulsive to me on many levels.
Still, this video never fails to make me laugh. And gag. And laugh and gag and laugh:

elgregoMemberCan I give up cooked veggies, but keep the raw ones? Or does that mean I have to turn in my carnivore card?

KayleighMember1980 called and it wants its diet back. You guys want some orange Jello and Rice-a-roni and Lipton onion soup dip to go with the steak?

charlabobParticipantWhew — the squirrels dodged a bullet when Huckabee when Huckabyebye: Squirrel a la popcornpopper:
June 26, 2008 at 1:39 pm #628995
charlabobParticipantKayleigh, as a veteran of the 80s (when I was still cooking) I must respectfully disagree — it was lime jello with cottage cheese suspension. (At least in the midwest.) Orange jello was for sissies.

KenParticipantNothing wrong with cooking and eating what you shoot yourself. I have not hunted in years but squirrel is good eats as long as you pay attention when skinning it. And make sure you find all the pellets… My grandmother used bird shot and a 410 but I damn near broke a tooth so many times I started using a 22 for mine.
I would prefer the wild ones away from the city though, the diet of Lincoln park critters is probably not “organic”.
If you cannot stand knowing the full process that puts packaged meat on the grocers shelves, you really should consider vegetarianism.
I have raised or hunted and butchered all manner of critters but I am still a liberal :)
BTW I am not giving up veggies and I have spent much time and money trying to get my tomatoes and peppers to grow in this refrigerator of a climate.

soclwrkrinmotnMemberKen, I hear you…I grew up with hunting and butchering all sorts of critters as well. (My dad taught me to hunt and gave me a 410 for my 10th birthday)…and I still love my veggies. I also don’t buy a lot of meat because I prefer organic and free range.
After spending a decade in semi-rural Alaska, I will also offer an addendum: if you aren’t willing to be meat, don’t eat meat.

KayleighMemberLOL, Charla. My mom made that exact thing.
One of my favorite websites for food nostalgia:

and further back into childhood:
Mmmm…Mug-O-Lunch and Grape Tang.

SueParticipantThe book “Gallery of Regrettable Food” is absolutely hysterical: http://www.amazon.com/Gallery-Regrettable-Food-James-Lileks/dp/0609607820/ref=sr_1_47?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1209748352&sr=8-47 – you can get it at the library too, which is how I read it. The lime green jello is tame compared to some of the “gems” in here.

JenVMembersome people sound so high and mighty when they talk about not eating meat, I swear. good for you, you don’t eat meat for your various social reasons. Don’t try to sell that to the rest of us. We all know how to read, and know the “dangers” of red meat. And I don’t need some PETA lover wearing leather shoes tell me that eating meat is cruel. There are alot more cruel things in this world that need fixing.
But you can have my veggies when you pry them from my cold dead hands- and the same goes for my meat. It is a sublime pleasure cutting into a charred on the outside, red on the inside rib-eye steak with fresh-grated horseradish and a nice glass of wine…oh man. I think we need to hit Jak’s for dinner tomorrow….
June 26, 2008 at 4:38 pm #629001
soclwrkrinmotnMemberAh…you are making me hungry, for the first time in over a week. A nice, rare prime rib with lots of horseradish…

RainyDay1235MemberHouse – Was it really necessarry to mock me for such a simple thing?
JenV – I was not pushing anyone to ‘not eat meat’ – I just said *I* was going to give it a shot for my *own* reasons. My husband will never give up steak – and that’s his own choice. If you wonder why everyone thinks you are rude, it’s because you completely misread what people write just to stir up trouble.
Thank you to everyone who provided positive ideas and feedback.
June 26, 2008 at 5:50 pm #629003
JenVMemberRainyDay- excuse the hell out of me- but your post read: “Giving up red meat- who’s with me?” That seems like you’re trying to get people to give up red meat with you. or maybe I misunderstood?
rude? go look in the mirror. JFC. I also like tofu and veggies. Who the hell cares, anyway? My mistake was posting a response on this forum.
good lord. I hate this f-ing forum these days. touchy touchy people, and no one can respond about anything without getting reamed.
June 26, 2008 at 6:06 pm #629004
KayleighMemberJen, nobody else took offense. Just you.
Some people don’t like red meat at all, and some people actually have a moral problem with it. Yet you all feel compelled to drool all over yourselves describing it. If anyone could take offense, it could be the vegetarians.
If you want respect, try offering it.
And by the way, I don’t take offense. I just think you guys sound retro. But that’s okay.
June 26, 2008 at 6:19 pm #629005
JenVMemberKayleigh- I didn’t take offense- I noted that most people responding were very high and mighty about how they don’t eat red meat. Just an observation. People who don’t eat meat are very judgmental of people who do. You don’t see that in the opposite direction. This is the last I will say on it. Good day to all you little forum members- have a nice life. I made a mistake coming back here.
June 26, 2008 at 6:20 pm #629006
RSMemberHow is red meat retro? If you define “retro” as the last few millennia of human existence in which people have been eating the flesh of animals, then okay I guess I’m retro too! :)
