I avoid Safeway or the major markets for produce. I will however, go out of my way to Uwajimaya because they have some unreal deals and the produce is way better than Safeway’s. I need to check out Tony’s again. It’s a bit out of my way though.

    rainyday1235..

then i assume you feel as responsible about your own words?

because you were rude to JenV…

just because she didn’t appreciate the judgements that came with your choice.. and some of the comments that followed…

“some people sound so high and mighty when they talk about not eating meat, I swear”

doesn’t mean that you should decide you are being personally attacked for your choice and therefore have the right to personally attack her…

all she did was provide an alternate point of view.. apparently in a way you didn’t appreciate.

Read your own words and ask yourself if that is how you would want to be spoken to… i think not.

and at what point was it not rude for you to voice satisfaction that she chose to sign off in frustration?

You are right rainyday1235, words do matter ..

and i am afraid i took as much umbrage to the way you titled your initial post and the judgements it contained as jenV did…

and probably for very different reasons.

    Jiggers..

maybe i need to spend more time at Uwajimaya. please twist my arm… ;-)

i also found some great deals in the oriental markets in White Center…

too bad i don’t know what to do with half of what they sell in the way of fresh produce.

did you know that tony will actually cut a cabbage in half for you if you only want half.. and have you checked out his $1 bin next to the door? i get a lot there for soups.

RainyDay1235: Please permit me to say this…it’s okay to disagree with someone, and yes, sometimes words seem rude or judgmental…but keep in mind this is the written word, and it’s pretty limited in conveying people’s intent and emotions.

You said that you were not meaning to come off as judgmental, and JenV was not trying to make fun of you personally, either. I will say this, I have met JenV, and she’s one of the nicest people I have met from the blog. I’ll bet you are too.

So, I quote a reply to charlabob (in referring to my own temper): “Stop, step back, breathe…and then write.” I think we all have to do that sometimes.

    ..that was for JoB, sorry.

I’m usually very open to sarcasm and the like – but some people here are rude on a regular basis – seemingly in an effort to get people riled up.

soclwrkrinmotn – I agree with you. I should have let it go. The best response is no response.

I have no problem awarding moral superiority points to vegetarians, and especially to vegans. It’s a much more compassionate, gentle, healthy way to live. Vegetarians get to be proud about it and I don’t care if they are smug.

If meat-eaters take umbrage to that, it’s more about *them* (their guilt, denial, twisting of facts, justification for their behavior, etc.)

I didn’t notice the drooling meat eaters taking into account how a moral vegetarian might feel abouttheir tales of slobbering over bleeding meat and gleefully hunting. So, why the double standard?

    My (probably perennially unpopular) opinion.

Just a reminder that this topic is about giving up VEGETABLES (thx House). Dang, I had hoped for a little levity, even if slightly irreverent, since we seem to be able to make any forum topic into a federal case these days.

“But, I also think it’s the right thing to do – for animals, my health AND the environment.

It doesn’t hurt that the face of baby cows eerily resemble my dog!”

Now.. don’t you think those statements are just a little judgmental?

I can see why you would choose to go meatless. and i cans see why those judgements would make it easier for you to stick to your resolve…

but they are judgments you have chosen to make, not universally held truths.

I have lived on a farm and i can tell you that the pigs and chickens are every bit as sweet as those cows… and can have more personality than you could imagine… all living things do.

that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t eat them or that it would be better for them or for the environment if we didn’t…

    so.. no, i’m not kidding.

When you assume your judgments are universal truths, you can always expect someone to object.

it’s a choice.. and i hope it’s one that works out for you and your health…

but, it doesn’t work well for everyone.

Kayleigh, aka the liberal House (thanx JT), you are right on a lot that. BUT as a meat eater, I don’t eat meat in front of my vegan friends. I am unashamed of eating meat. I don’t feel guilt about it. I don’t twist my facts.

And if a cougar catches me and eats me, more power to him! (Not to say I am gonna let him catch me easily…have coffee with me and I will share a story.)

And yes, a little levity would be nice. *sigh* Please?

    LOL.. no judgements here

“If meat-eaters take umbrage to that, it’s more about *them* (their guilt, denial, twisting of facts, justification for their behavior, etc.)”

sorry .. I am still laughing.

i am just an old farm girl.. and that is an accurate assessment of the way i was brought up. i didn’t know meat came in those little cellophane packages until i was a teenager and we moved to the big city.. and i do everything i can not to buy it that way.

i actually liked getting to know the animals i ate… i treated them really well.

i admit, i have a real problem killing… but i have no problem eating… so, i have butchered my own meat.

i would prefer not to be eaten.. but i also haven’t noticed anyone fattening me up and taking responsibility for my well being lately.. so if what goes around comes around.. i am probably safe:)

i was taught to avoid cougers… and bears.

Soclwrkinmotn.. avoidance is so much more effective than fighting:)

And i treat the veggies and herbs in my backyard garden equally well.. something you might appreciate if the sun ever comes out long enough to create the bounty this attention deserves…

    I also share:)

i think it is a really good thing that people are thinking so much about what they put into their mouths… we don’t have to grow our own food to be aware of it’s source.

i can’t promise not to eat meat in front of vegetarians.. but i can promise you i won’t give you a bad time for your choice as long as you don’t give me a bad time for mine.

i am sorry soclwrkrinmotn.. i have this bizarre cartoon in my head of you doing battle with a couger… i woudl bet on you ;->

Jo, serious question. Why would you take offense at the OP if you are 100% comfortable with your decision to eat meat?

I understand, soc. You weren’t one of the ones taking offense. I don’t mind people eating beef or pork in front of me. It just looks disgusting to see something bleeding on your plate (to me). Just like if someone ate sushi or brussel sprouts or deep fried goobygoo—I just think, how could they eat something so gross? (I understand people have different tastes. Really.)

Now I feel bad because I do try to be respectful. :-( Jan will tell you how nice I am in person. ;-)

    Kayleigh,

i take offense at the idea that i, or anyone else who chooses to eat meat are somehow less caring about animals or the environment because we choose (for whatever reason) to eat meat.

i have lived the life that includes growing the animals i ate.. both as a child and again as an adult.

i know that you can grow animals for food in an environmentally sound way… without abuse.

it is judgmental to assume that those who eat meat do so without thinking of their personal impact on the earth.

And.. it is an incorrect judgement.

Most of the people who have responded to this thread with conversation.. not confrontation.. choose to eat meat in a responsible way.

that choice alone is enough to make the argument that those people are well aware of their impact on the earth and are making an effort to make positive choices.

Even TheHouse who loves confrontation.. and steak… released ladybugs in his backyard to control his aphids.

You may not agree with their choices.. but obviously, they don’t agree with yours either.

And neither choice is morally superior.

If we really want to talk about diet.. there are far larger issues than meat.

noone claims a moral high ground when talking about high fructose corn syrup or any of the other many additives that are part of most prepared food…

but those issues impact our health and the production of food products far more than meat… when raised responsibly.

if eating meat even responsibly is a poor choice for you.. then you shouldn’t eat meat.

But that doesn’t give you the right to assume that eating meat is wrong and that anyone who does has to somehow defend their position.

i bet if we stacked our net footprints.. even an old meat eater like me whose illness prevents the use of public transportation and whose lack of energy prevents implementing more environmentally friendly practices would still net out at least as well as most environmentally conscious vegetarians..

after all i got an early start at good habits… a real granola ;->

i feel guilty driving a minivan that gets as good gas mileage the way i drive it as many “economy” cars… and if i could find something that would work better, i would.

Some meat eaters are very nice people too:)
