Fauntleroy Way road-rebuilding update: Revving up again Monday

Manuel e-mailed earlier this week to ask if there was a reason major work on the Fauntleroy Way road-rebuilding project had slowed, leaving rough edges between lanes, among other difficult spots. We asked SDOT for the latest, and they’ve just issued a complete update, addressing those edges and also the California/Fauntleroy intersection’s status – read on:

It is another busy week as concrete reconstruction work around the California Avenue SW/Fauntleroy Way SW intersection begins again on July 13th. Crews will work on the south side for five days, wrapping up by July 17th (weather permitting).

Traffic at this intersection will once again be reduced to one lane in each direction to accommodate the work zone and to provide sufficient space for large vehicles to turn. A uniformed police officer will be on site at California Avenue SW during work hours and the afternoon peak traffic period to offer assistance with the temporary lane configuration changes, pedestrian crossing, and to keep traffic moving.

Pavement grinding, too!—
In addition to the concrete reconstruction at California, crews will grind off the top layer of asphalt on the east side of the roadway between SW Holly Street and SW Edmunds Street next week. Moderate construction noise and dust is expected as well as the removal of on-street parking on the east side of the roadway. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction through this area. When the grinding is complete, crews will work from south to north along the east side repairing the concrete base pavement under the asphalt.

Temporary cross street and driveway interruptions are anticipated. Crews will work directly with affected businesses to restore access as quickly as possible. There will also be some turn prohibitions to keep traffic moving through the project area.

When are they going to re-enable the traffic sensors at the California intersection? It’s annoying sitting at a red light at 5:30 in the morning when there is no cross traffic.
