Another new West Seattle eatery on the way

sandwichboard.jpg

Despite its longrunning “grand opening” sign, the teriyaki/burger place next to Tervo’s on Fauntleroy (4400 block, kitty corner from Starbucks’ drive-thru) has been closed for a while – but something new is moving in. Tim Roberts sent a tip yesterday that he’d heard about a barbecue joint coming in; we went by, nothing in the window, couldn’t find anything online – but now Tim sends this followup – a sandwich board in the window:

OK Corral
Sam’mich Slingers

B-B-Q
Pulled Pork
Fried Catfish
Hot Link

We’re going by to check it out. 12:09 PM UPDATE: Added photo of the sandwich board. Nobody there so we couldn’t ask about plans for opening; tried the number, no answer. Will keep checking!

Awesome!!! Although, from the Yelp reviews of the other place it doesn’t look like they serve what I consider “real barbecue.” Oh well, better than nothing!

    where on Fauntleroy?
    what is Tervo’s?
    the menu sounds great

I wish them luck, no restaurant over the years has been able to make a go of it there as it’s a horrible location.

Diane, it’s right across the street from the drive-thru S’bucks.

There is actually an awesome BBQ place at 11614 Ambaum Blvd SW called Berry’s BBQ. My husband and I went there last week and got the best ribs and pork. All the meals come with super yummy homemade corn bread and baked beans.

Warning: the meals are quite large though. We could have shared one and still had leftovers for the next dinner.

I’ve always wanted to try Berry’s BBQ! I’ll have to check it out.

Oh happy day! I can stop on my way home from work. Another delicious option to get out of cooking for myself.

    JimmyG,

Sunfish did well there awhile back, good enough to move to Alki. If your chow is worth it, people will go there.

Is this the ex-Seattle Teriyaki that closed for months for remodeling only to open with a different menu and a different (less tasty) recipe for their teriyaki? We used to get take out from there a LOT on the way home. Stopped going after the remodel. Unfortunate if they couldn’t make a go of it after spending money to fix the place up!

Yes, same spot. Right next to Tervo’s, and the aikido studio.

  • nuni September 25, 2008 (2:45 pm)

I’m excited to have me a sam and some miches.

The OK Corral in Greenwood is awesome and authentic. I recommend the “hood juice”. I hope it is the same owner.

The sandwich board shows a phone number with a Ballard prefix. Does anyone know if this is a business that’s moving or expanding?

  • ricosuave September 25, 2008 (5:19 pm)

note to self–read all posts before commenting.

As for Tervo’s, I used to buy my lunch there way back in 1981 when I worked at the old West Seattle YMCA. Over the years I’ve always marveled at the way they manage to stay in business in that location.

It’s great another little place is on it’s way to WS. BR was able to be very successful in an out-of-the-way spot; just think about how much ‘crack chicken’ they’ve served. Zippys too, it’s behind a food mart on 16th and Blaine is running a wonderful business.

If people support it and the food is good then it will do just just fine.

Part of the trend, North Seattle branching out to West Seattle. Prost, whose proprietor I interviewed yesterday, is another recent example. Think about it … Caffe Ladro, Uptown, Cupcake Royale, Matador, the forthcoming Zeeks … just to name a very few — TR

Some of the reviews mention the Greenwood space as being “condemned” (or looking like it should be). Any idea if this will be a 2nd location, or if the Greenwood location is closing?

  • WSB September 26, 2008 (10:03 am)

I’ll be trying the phone number again today and will inquire, if somebody answers …

In the case of Cupcake Royale, they’ve actually abandoned their roots by claiming their “headquarters” is now in Ballard. The original CR was on 34th in Madronna and the Ballard one was their second – and obviously – their most successful. I really wouldn’t call CR a “north” end business – it’s basically the high end of the CD. And, for me, the cupcakes at Coffee to a Tea are better – the cake part is better and the frosting is the same but slightly denser which suits my taste better. When CR first opened in Madronna I’d bus up there once a month. When they opened in Ballard I’d try that out a few times every month or so. I think their recipes are okay but the limited choice (except for seasonal items) has kept me away. The mini cupcakes at Coffee to a Tea come in a huge variety of choices and are a steal at $1 each – just enough for a nibble and won’t break the bank – so to speak. WooHoo!!

yeah…next to Tervos? That’s a really bad location. No quick parking to run in/out, etc…wow. I love the Greenwood place..but, wow..I hope they can survive there. Bad choice, imvho..

for something unique (no other barbecue right in WS, though the sandwiches are going to be the focus here), I wouldn’t be surprised if they do well. there’s a fair amount of room in that lot right behind Tervo’s (I parked there the other day to walk around to see if anyone was at the restaurant-to-be, and when I didn’t find anyone, that’s where I hung out while calling the number on the sign). Think Zippy’s – not much parking there (or is there a back lot I haven’t seen?) but because they offered something unique, they were mobbed … One thing I want to ask Otis, though, is what kind of a lease commitment he has – since that building is still for sale and has an open development proposal.

Sorry, comment time is over.
