West Seattle traffic alerts: Bridge & Viaduct (etc.) closures for week ahead

(Updating this daily through the week to cross out what’s already happened)

Once again, looking ahead to major road closures scheduled to affect West Seattleites in the week ahead, we’re combining both sets of closure alerts – from the state, regarding the Alaskan Way Viaduct/Highway 99, and from the city, regarding the Spokane Street Viaduct Widening Project – into one list for handy reference (it’ll be atop the sidebar “Biggest Stories” list throughout the week). ALSO – we’re adding in the work on the bike trail, announced a few days ago. As we write this (Saturday night), the only closure in effect is the AWV/99, scheduled for the rest of the weekend. So this picks things up tomorrow:

SUNDAY (June 17)
Alaskan Way Viaduct/99 – Full closure continues
Spokane St. Viaduct – No closure scheduled

MONDAY (June 18)
Alaskan Way Viaduct/99 – Reopens by 5 am
Spokane St. Viaduct – Eastbound lanes closed and one westbound lane closed 10 pm-5 am

TUESDAY (June 19)
Alaskan Way Viaduct/99 – no scheduled closure

WEDNESDAY (June 20 – UPDATE)

Got to love how people scramble to blame anyone but themselves for being stuck in traffic. Just remember- if you’re in traffic, you’re part of the problem.

That’s right, if you are in traffic you are part of the problem. Because you should never have to leave your house for any reason and should always be able to keep track of the many continuous and never ending road closures that are choking West Seattle.

Really Rock n Roll Marathon will close the viaduct from 5:30am to 3pm??? That seems like an excessive time frame AND right after this weekends closure…grrrr…

It did last year too (till 4 pm on that date, according to the 2011 grid) – but good point about the context of other closures lately. We are checking with WSDOT this coming week about the long-range outlook for more closures related to the “reinforcement” part of the project. Also note – we’re adding to our long-range calendar now – the annual evening closure for the Torchlight Run, July 28th (course map: http://www.seafair.com/AnEvent/Pics/P7/2012%20Torchlight%20Run%20Route.pdf ).

Why does the City not put a sign at the light 35 th & West Seattle Freeway so that people do not get trapped in the closure mess each time it occurs ? I guess I answered my own question — the City.

Well, KT, there’s always the option of NOT reading helpful posts such as these and getting stuck in traffic anyway.

Oddly enough, I manage to avoid the traffic most of the time, and not by never leaving the house.
.
I get that it’s frustrating, but c’mon, people. The work’s gotta get done sometime…unless you really want to argue that the Spokane viaduct shouldn’t be widened. I suppose we could go back to complaining about people going 50 in those narrow little lanes…

With all the necessary construction closures that happen on both viaducts, do you think people could find some place other than the 99 (or any other busy thoroughfare)to hold their walks, runs, sock hops, marathons, cartwheel turnings and trumpeting elephants?

I feel really bad for the downtown merchants. Between the intimidating street thugs and the traffic issues, its pretty dead in the retail core in the evenings and weekends. We plan not to go down or thru downtown in the evenings and weekends. A huge concerns is the car pollution with cars idling for so long in Seattle now. You use to easily be able to hop neighborhoods with your friends packed in the car from Capitol Hill, to Fremont, to Ballard and land back home in West Seattle. With the lack of essential public and desirable public transit between neighborhoods on weekends— it helps you consider moving somewhere else. West Seattle has become more like an island.

Comment to Admiral California…even though I may not agree with datamuse. Don’t forget that the first published Declaration of Independence was published in German in the Boston Herald. Therefore, don’t squelch someone elses right to their opinion. Slamming someone else is very transparent. Any ethniticity should be celebrated and appreciated. We live in America for the rights we have. You two need to jello wrestle and make up.
