WEST SEATTLE WEEKEND SCENE: Streetcorner ‘Reclaim the Flag’ rallies

The Statue of Liberty joined the Stars and Stripes as American icons carried Saturday afternoon during streetcorner rallies from Admiral Junction to Morgan Junction.

Previous rallies were held concurrently with similar actions across the country. This time, “Reclaim the Flag” was a West Seattle Indivisible standalone plan.

In comment discussion following coverage of previous rallies, someone has invariably asked, why do this – what’s the point? So we took that question to a few of the participants we found in Morgan Junction. Carol answered that question head-on:

I’m tired of people asking me if it does any good to come out, and I’m tired of answering yes. What are the other actions you could take then? Donating to a cause? Supporting [specific] politicians? This [protesting] isn’t the action for everyone, but anytime we can see the collective good, that is inspiring for people – whatever they may do. … I’m optimistic that for enough people the light bulb will come on – and that we [the people] are the only promise we have to make it better, that’s it, because this government is so corrupt.

Scott told us:

Each one of us standing on a corner makes a big difference, but not only that – the bus drivers waving at me, and all the honking [really shows support] … This is my chance to make up for me and my generation not finishing the job in the ’60s and ’70s, I’m glad to be able to make a difference if I can. … In the 1960s, we thought we were going to change the world, then we got married and settled down and didn’t follow through. … What’s going on now should make us appreciate democracy rather than taking it for granted – hopefully the backlash against the rise of authoritarianism will give rise to a resurgence of democracy.

We also talked to that trio in Morgan Junction:

Democrats are out of touch, and Republicans are flirting with fascism … The attacks on the Constitution, the [imprisonment] of immigrants [even with] green cards and visas, breaking the law – the law we’ve had since 1776 – who gives him the right? … The system doesn’t work any more, the legislative branch doesn’t want to act, the judicial branch doesn’t want to act – that leaves us with a king, which is unacceptable.

One added a comment related to the legislation that’s continued making its way through Congress this weekend: “I’m protesting the ‘big bad bill’ because it’s taking away health care – it’s going to make people die.”

WHAT’S NEXT: Most of those with whom we spoke said rallying/sign-waving isn’t all they’re doing; they’re also contacting members of Congress.     Of course these rallies make a difference. This is the backbone of democracy.  I hope that for every honk there is a realization that We the People are the last defense for democracy.

    “This is my chance to make up for me and my generation not finishing the job in the ’60s and ’70s, I’m glad to be able to make a difference if I can. … In the 1960s, we thought we were going to change the world, then we got married and settled down and didn’t follow through” I’d hope you’d support the people who came home to only be demonized by their own citizens. I’d hope you’d support those who were refugees who fought against tyrannical Communist dictatorships and were forced to flee their own country or be killed. I’d hope you’d support my father and uncle and my wife and every single one of my in-laws.  Might want to do a bit more reflection on your self.

    Maybe the first step to reclaiming the American Flag is to actually have school districts say the pledge of Allegiance each morning like what used to occur long ago but no longer happening in public schools in our communities in the North West area.

      Feels kind of like empty words right now. Saying the Pledge of Allegiance isn’t really doing a whole lot to prevent lawful detention. I think it’s great for young people to feel patriotic (and ideally wanting to participate in a government they can feel proud of), but that’s a bit orthogonal to the direct threats to the balance of power that is completely out of wack.

      Because it worked so well in the past?  I remember being forced to recite the pledge of allegiance in the 60’s as a child even as young American men were coming home in pine boxes and police were brutalizing anti-war protesters.  I also remember my parents being furious at the  deafening silence from mainstream “Christian” denominational churches.  Is that the America you want to go back to?

      What used to occur long ago was NOT saying the pledge.  That was something that didn’t start until the 20th century.  Most of the United States’ history there was no jingoistic flag-waving and performative patriotism.

      Anonyme – Agree! The “under God” was added to the pledge during the 1950s Cold War, supposedly to counter Communism and emphasize the USA’s religious heritage. I think it should be removed as part of “separation of church and state.” I have nothing against religion but keep it out of government and anything civic and leave it in peoples’ private homes.

      We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”. Still to this day dumbfounded on how “under God” doesn’t belong in the pledge… first amendment holds no contest… but I guess we have to be divisible and take it out, ironically breaking the pledge, and applauding ourselves for it.

        “Creator” is deliberately non-specific and can be interpreted in multiple ways including secular ones. One could say that your mother too “created” you. The atoms and natural processes of the universe could be considered our “creator” in a scientific sense. The Founders, who included deists, specifically chose language that could accommodate diverse beliefs.

          WS Urbanist, thanks for fleshing that out in such a lovely yet rational way.  I would also point out that the word “Men” in the phrase, if taken literally, would mean that women have no rights under the Constitution.  But many phrases in the law are interpreted as to intent – not literal interpretation as some would prefer.

          WS Urabanist, You’re onto something with the powers of the earth and laws of nature, but I’ve never heard “natures God” described as atoms before.  So (1), if Creator isn’t specific, and natures God is non-denominational and all inclusive, following that logic there was never a sound argument to take the word out of the pledge to begin with.  And (2) if Creator is specific, it would apply all the same on principal founding.  Sounds like the only reason it was stripped was those who are (1) exclusive to others, or (2) didn’t like the foundation and wanted to undermine it.

        The Declaration of Independence is not law.  All our laws must comply with the Constitution, which does not contain the words “God” or “Creator” but does state that there will be no religious test for government office, and that Congress cannot establish a state religion.

    A lot of folks quit saying the pledge of Allegiance during the Civil Rights and Anti-War movements of the 60’s. I love my country and democracy but I will not pledge allegiance to a government. I will pledge allegiance to truth and honesty. Marching and showing yourself worked in the 60’s and 70’s; it will work again.
