‘Brush fire’ response at Westcrest Park

Worth noting as dry weather continues, with hotter temperatures on the way – Seattle Fire dispatched four units to Westcrest Park for a brush fire that’s just been extinguished. They identified 8th/Cloverdale and a field with a weight limit, so sounds like it might have been on the reservoir lid. How it started is under investigation.

I had forgot my phone over there as a dog park yesterday I went there around 10:15 at the night and when I got there, there was a black sedan and there were two black girls who I seen look like teenagers. They were eyeing me down, when I got therebut I was too worried about finding my phone. When I came back after I found my phone I was almost by the parking lot and I hear and seeing a big big explosion of fireworks and and then a big fire after all I seen was about four people running away from where the explosion happen. I just ran to my car before I got to my car. I seen these teenagers and the black sedan. They were holding a big gas container and they were laughing I didn’t want to say nothing because I was afraid I was gonna get hurt or something was gonna happen if I said something so I just went to my car as fast as I could run away and called the cops all I fell after was just gasoline in my whole lungs just on fire thank God I didn’t walk the way where the explosion was because who knows what would’ve happened for sure I know that they got fireworks. They put a lot of gasoline on the fireworks and light it these kids are really messed up. I was super pissed when I seen them, but I was afraid I didn’t wanna get hurt myself. I was just in shock with what happened. Be careful these kids. They don’t care. They were just laughing after it happened. I think there was two teenage girls for sure and two guys I think when pass them the car was full so there were probably four people in that car. This was a crazy night. I couldn’t even believe I left my phone there at the time that happened thank God I’m OK though.

Interesting about the gasoline. We just experienced a very large explosion near my house in Arbor Heights, followed by the crackle of fireworks. The explosion was ground level and shook my house. This was at 11pm. Several neighbors came out as a result and it started a small grass fire. Very disturbing trend. I’d really like to see this stopped as it is a serious threat to our homes and surroundings. By the way, the last time I was at Westcrest at 10pm (night sledding) a man was there in the just closed parking lot (not sure how he drove in) and cocked a gun at us as we walked past at a distance.

We heard a series of fireworks coming from Westcrest right before we heard sirens. So guessing that started the fire. Every year that field becomes a playground for the explosion junkies. It’s been better this past year for sure so something changed.

Looks like someone blew up a toilet bowl or something.

Anyone know why they don’t water the grass?

They don’t need to water in order to keep the grass alive (provided no vandalism).  We are also experiencing a drought already, after less-than-normal precipitation over the winter, so it would be great to not have to continually hose down the entire state to protect against pyromaniacs and just, you know, preserve resources.

Here in Arbor Heights we heard a series of mortar-type fireworks explosions in the distance followed by the fire truck sirens. This must have been the inaugural burn to kick off the annual ‘Teenagers with Bombs Random Fire Season’.

I don’t know about Westcrest, but the city used to water a lot of fields that they don’t anymore. Alki Playfield and Riverview were 2 that I am familiar with as a kid in the 80’s, and remember the sprinklers coming on in the morning and evening, having to run off the fields. With all the money we give the parks and the abundance of water here, it’s a disgrace we have bone dry fields in the summer. I would like to say remember that to people who like to hand over blank checks on levy increases, but won’t hold my breath
