I didn’t know foxgloves could open so beautifully!

Kim explained – and I will add some of this to the caption – “I have strange, Day of the Triffids-style foxgloves in my garden, and I thought they were fascinating. Apparently these mutants are made by something called pelorism, where all of the top flowers of the foxglove stem fuse together.”

Thank you for the additional info on the fascinating foxglove!  Do the bees visit these giant mutant flowers on top? I like to watch the bees disappear into the bell shaped blossoms – fun to watch them at work :)

I’ve been watching for the bees (and the hummingbirds that usually frequent my really tall foxgloves), and I haven’t seen any of them give the peloristic flowers a try. I think everything’s so twisted up and fused that the bees aren’t registering them as something they should fly to, or something. I can’t quite tell if there’s pollen, and nothing is coming off on my fingers.  It’s been very interesting!

Thanks Kim for sharing what you have observed. Sure is interesting! Do you think these mutants will return next year or are they a one off for a season?
