UPDATE: Biggest West Seattle power outage ends after 10+ hours

8:13 AM: Thanks for the tips. 248 homes in the Lowman Beach/Seaview area are without power this windy morning, as shown above in our screengrab from the Seattle City Light outage map. It’s a busy morning for the utility, with 16,000+ others also out on this breezy morning.

2 PM: That outage, which SCL’s map says started around 4:41 am, is not resolved yet. Nor has a 67-customer outage in the Pigeon Point vicinity that started at 5:50 am, 11 customers in Arbor Heights since 8:43 am, and one customer in South Delridge since 10:41 am.

3:21 PM: Thanks to the commenter who reported that the biggest outage, Lowman Beach/Seaview, is over, after more than 10 hours. We’ve had a message out to SCL for a while asking for the cause but haven’t heard back – they’re still dealing with thousands of others out around the city.

Wonders what caused it? Hmm just wires or did it take a transformer down with it?

    • WSB June 3, 2024 (8:43 am)

The nearest “wires down” call on the SFD log is outside the outage area, 4000 block of SW Orchard. If anyone sees SCL crews working on this outage, let us know!

I was woken up by an explosion sometime around 5. I’m guessing that was the transformer.

There are at least four large apartment buildings in that outage map – with hundreds of people in them. I just drove around and didn’t see any Seattle City Light trucks doing repair.

Estimated restoration is/was 11am. It’s 11am and still no power. If it went out at 5am, that’s 6 hours.

    • WSB June 3, 2024 (11:08 am)

As we always say, PLEASE ignore “estimated restoration” times. SCL itself notes they are algorithmic guesses based on pretty much nothing related to whatever is actually going on. Could be much sooner, could be much later.

They need to be providing manual updates as much as possible. Not depend on the auto algorithm for updates. The last update was almost an hour ago.

I live in Gatewood and although I did not lose power, I did just lose Internet (Xfinity) and I’m being told it is a local outage.

  • 7hourswithoutpower June 3, 2024 (11:23 am)

I’m hearing it went out at 4:30am or so.

    • WSB June 3, 2024 (1:10 pm)

The map says it started at 4:41 am. Throughout the service area, SCL is still dealing with more than 80 separate outages totaling 5,500 homes and businesses, so it might still be a while.

Heading into eight hours no power

  • rachel June 3, 2024 (1:18 pm)

most if not all of the outages are due to the wind

  • Terri June 3, 2024 (1:27 pm)

So still out? I headed with my work laptop to my Sister’s to work. Hoping to head home soon though.

My Xfinity internet is out in Morgan Junction, since around 11:30AM). The app suggests it’s a big outage (500-2000 customers), but no other details. Anyone have details on that they can share??

I’m a few blocks south of thriftway and my internet/cable went out about 11:00 a.m. and came back about 2:45. No word on what exactly happened but glad it’s back

  • powerbackon June 3, 2024 (3:05 pm)

    Power back on near Lowman
