WEST SEATTLE ART: Local rock superstar on signal box

Thanks to the texter who sent the photo! That’s the latest signal-box portrait by West Seattle artist Desmond Hansen, this time celebrating local rock superstar Eddie Vedder. It’s at 35th/Webster, on the corner by Best of Hands Barrelhouse (WSB sponsor). You can scroll through our 2 1/2 years of coverage of his other local work here.

P.S. Vedder and his bandmates are featured by The New York Times today for their get-out-the-vote work.

     Really? That’s Eddie ?

    • WSB October 10, 2020 (12:09 pm)

I checked the artist’s Instagram account rather than making an assumption. (Click his name above for the link.)

    • Brian Hughes October 10, 2020 (1:12 pm)

      It’s early-Eddie.

    • Frog October 10, 2020 (3:14 pm)

Google image search “Eddie Vedder young” and you can find the exact photo it was based on (from reddit).

Ed is an amazing musician, & dad, & West Seattle neighbor. How about we get something a bit closer to what he looks like? Take something from recent album or even the ukulele release.

  • Westwood October 10, 2020 (1:16 pm)

Um – that doesn’t look anything like Ed.

    • JES October 10, 2020 (4:25 pm)

At all. Would have never guessed that’s who it’s supposed to be. It would be cool to mix it up and have some other artists work on the boxes over here!

      • Dunno October 10, 2020 (9:37 pm)

While I appreciate the effort that goes into it, I’m really hoping to see more diversity of West Seattle artwork/artists in the future. Also friendly reminder that there are also famous Seattle women that could be depicted.

      • Yes October 10, 2020 (10:11 pm)

        Totally agree!!!

  • Huh? October 10, 2020 (1:44 pm)

I was a neighbor of Eddie, did construction in his home, hung out with his beautiful wife….that is not in any way an accurate depiction of his physical being. The artist has done a great job with other famous people but… just wow.

  • miws October 10, 2020 (2:32 pm)

This looks to be the image that Desmond was working from…https://www.reddit.com/r/LadyBonersLongHair/comments/gxvkxu/young_eddie_vedder/ —-Mike

Doesn’t look like Eddie, or the photo, regardless of age. For one thing, it leaves out one of his most delicious features – his dimples.

  • Kris October 10, 2020 (5:02 pm)

Gosh, everyone’s a critic. I will just say, thank you for adding this beautiful piece of art to our neighborhood.

  • KK October 10, 2020 (5:34 pm)

Man I usually LOVE Desmond’s art but this…not a great depiction. I would not recognize this as Eddie Veder. Cheeks are too prominent. 😞

  • norskgirl October 10, 2020 (5:34 pm)

I agree with you Kris.  I appreciate that these otherwise bland signal boxes are graced with such color and culture and celebration!  Thank you Desmond Hansen, for your time, energy, talent and inspiration.

  • SuperLazy October 10, 2020 (6:23 pm)

Honestly I thought it was Julian Lennon. Doesn’t look like Eddie, but it’s better than I could do.

  • no way October 10, 2020 (6:49 pm)

    Really Julian Lennon?

  • Dunno October 10, 2020 (7:55 pm)

What does Mr. Veder think?   That’s all that matters!  I hope he likes.

  • AlkiGirl October 10, 2020 (8:31 pm)

    Ha! I see the resemblance.

  • TD October 10, 2020 (10:48 pm)

I’m sure Eddie is flattered despite the critics.

  • lox October 11, 2020 (1:06 am)

Oh my gosh stop complaining! I saw him working on it, immediately knew who it was and smiled. I love it! Thank you Desmond for the gift of art.

  • Diane October 11, 2020 (5:49 am)

I thinks it’s great!  Thank you Desmond!

  • Lynn October 11, 2020 (5:54 am)

Desmond please do one of Eddie Van Halen 💔🤞

  • JA October 11, 2020 (6:47 am)

What’s that saying?  Opinions are like…?  Its easy to be a critic.  I love seeing Lane and Chris and George on our signal cabinets.  Welcome Eddie.

  • Jeff B. October 11, 2020 (8:06 am)

Drove by it yesterday and knew exactly who it was. Been a fan since I moved to Seattle in 1991. Nice tribute.  Let’s put Jeff, Mike,Stone and Matt on one as well! B.T.W., great place to have a beer!

  • wseaturtle October 11, 2020 (8:36 am)

I like rock n roll just as much as anyone, but how about some local greats.?. Bill Boeing, Alex Haley, Gary Larson,  Tori Black, Henry Jackson, Charlie Chong, . just a suggestion.

    Isnt he from San Diego?

  • FemmeFatale October 11, 2020 (10:26 am)

Hey how’s about doing the next one of Ann & Nancy Wilson??

    • WSB October 11, 2020 (10:58 am)

There’s already one (scroll through our link of past coverage, or just go by Fauntleroy/Avalon).

  • Keith October 11, 2020 (11:27 am)

Desmond talks about community response to his work (including criticism!) in the “Street Art Intersections” episode of All Ways West Seattle podcast.

  • SugarBear October 11, 2020 (12:14 pm)

That portrait totally needs a mustache! Lol Ed get on that ASAP!

  • martin October 11, 2020 (1:08 pm)

This looks nothing like Eddie, NOTHING..

  • sam-c October 11, 2020 (1:42 pm)

It’s funny that couple of the people complaining about the depiction also mis-spell Vedder.  I agree that an older depiction of this great local singer might be more recognizable, but this painting matches (pretty well) the photo that Mike (miws) shared (and plus, I got a chuckle from the reddit thread name….) .

  • WGA October 11, 2020 (3:01 pm)

This is an artist’s interpretation  of a subject, its not meant to be completely realistic.
I have noticed from studying some of the artist’s paintings that he has a unique style. For example, the skin is almost always very smooth, almost feminine or even mannequin like. Also, the facial features are sometimes more pronounced and sometimes less.
There are several examples of his work where I did not immediately identify the subject however I always new it was his work. The Ann and Nancy Wilson box for example.
When I first saw the photo of the painting above, I was not sure who it represented either until I read the article. I actually thought it was a woman. I did know whose work it was.
After reading the article, I recognize it as Eddie Vedder.
Another great addition to the West Seattle streetscape!

  • sw October 11, 2020 (6:27 pm)

Per Desmond’s IG, he still has detail work to do. This portrait isn’t done yet, folks.

  • KM8 October 11, 2020 (7:43 pm)

It’s art, people…not People Magazine. Loosen up. Nice work, Desmond!

  • Wsres October 11, 2020 (9:08 pm)

Desmond Hansen is an amazing artist, but this is the first oneI don’t like…

  • CWK October 11, 2020 (11:05 pm)

no matter what i always appreciate the great art all over our beloved WS!  Thank you Desmond.
