West Seattle Weather Watch: Friday p.m. melt-off edition

(NEW WEATHER ALERT: Wind advisory in effect starting at midnight)

(Latest bridge and Viaduct views; more cams on the WSB Traffic page)
12:50 PM: Just back from touring part of the peninsula, tweeting photos along the way.

(Looking south on 35th from Myrtle Reservoir Park vicinity)
The weather is dicier now than earlier – fog has rolled in (at least on the south side), and the rain continues to slushify the snow/ice – with some of the latter now coming off trees, cars, etc. in chunks and sheets. Just happened to us as we stopped on a downhill to turn – what had been frozen solid on the car roof suddenly slid down onto the windshield. And we just heard the Tacoma Narrows Bridge is closed because ice is coming off the cables. So be mindful of new (albeit temporary) hazards. Afternoon notes, ahead.

12:58 PM UPDATE: Seattle Public Schools has announced that next Friday will be the first snow make-up day (was supposed to be a no-classes day).

1:31 PM UPDATE: Darren sent the photo with word a tree took out a wire near 34th/Findlay on the north side of High Point. No outage associated with that, according to the City Light system-status map, but the possibility continues to loom throughout the afternoon as chunks of ice keep falling off roofs, trees, poles, etc. (we just heard another mighty “thud” on the side of WSB HQ). The forecast hasn’t changed – rain, warming temperatures, and the wind picking up later.

2 PM UPDATE: Still a good idea to avoid non-arterial hills. Like Yancy (off Avalon, by WSB sponsor Stor-More), as Judy‘s photo shows. And if you really haven’t seen those windshield/car ice sheets yourself – they have an artistic application too, seen in this photo Brewster took in the Admiral District:

P.S. Puget Sound Blood Center has said they’re running way low because of the snow. If you are able to donate, please let ’em know.

4:23 PM UPDATE: Trouble near Jefferson Square:

Mike says that Safeway truck is currently blocking 41st SW on the center’s east side. We also received a note from Martha warning about the condition of the parking lot inside the center: “No plowing, no drains have been cleared, standing water is a good 4-6″ deep, shopping carts cannot be maneuvered…” She says she complained to center management, but no response. And now a WIND ADVISORY is in effect, starting at midnight tonight – we had mentioned earlier that the forecast mentioned the possibility of wind but it’s been upgraded to an alert.

4:51 PM UPDATE: Metro issues the reminder that it’s on snow routing at least through the end of today, but hoping to start returning to normal operations over the weekend. Meanwhile, it’s getting dark fast, and if you haven’t taken a look recently at your sidewalk/storm drain, you might go out one more time (assuming you’re home) – Jeff sends this photo from 48th/Edmunds west of The Junction, where he says he is trying to stay ahead of “Slush-mageddon”:

After 6 pm or so, we’re planning go back to a more normal story flow, and the weather coverage will not necessarily be atop the main WSB page unless something major is happening. However, important notes (like the Wind Advisory) will be linked from the BIG STORIES list on the sidebar.

5:10 PM UPDATE: Traffic advisory in comments – lots of ferry traffic on Fauntleroy Way, and the slush/snow on the roadside is forcing it into the street. Here’s a webcam at Cloverdale:

We’re thinking Southworth-bound ferry traffic might be up because the Tacoma Narrows Bridge remains closed following the earlier problems with falling ice. (Added: Via Twitter, Maggie points us to the WSF Bulletin saying exactly that – longer waits on Southworth/Bremerton runs from this side.)

7:04 PM UPDATE: Thanks to Kirsten for this photo of the backup last hour at Fauntleroy/Myrtle:

We were out in that time frame traveling between Fauntleroy and The Junction, and lots of people are out and about. The complications include the fact the parking “lanes” alongside even the otherwise-cleared arterials are still full of slush, half-melted ice, and puddling. Good news is, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge’s center lanes have reopened, so the backup should start to … well, melt away.

10 PM: Desiree says the drama of two semis stuck in the vicinity of the east side of Jefferson Square continues. Another tow truck just showed up for the stuck Safeway semi:

Not to sound like a jack, but shouldn’t you clean off the roof of your car first that way it does not do any damage to anyone else car when driving down the road. Just a thought.

  • Chris January 20, 2012 (1:00 pm)

Yes – this is good advice to drivers who may not be used to this amount of snow on vehicles. Do not just clear off your windshields. Always clear off the top of your car as well. Not only could the ice and snow slide off onto someone, it could slide down into your field of vision and leave you blind.

  • Kathrine January 20, 2012 (1:05 pm)

Yes, please clean off your car roof. Had a truck pull in front of me on the WSB and the snow/ice pack came flying off the top of his car. It didn’t hit me, but if it had, it could have done some damage.

  • Steph January 20, 2012 (1:09 pm)

Just went to Elliott Bay Brew Pub for lunch. (Stir crazy with the kids given no school . . . again.) Anyway, drive was fine but lots of big slush ruts off any main street. Water is everywhere. Huge puddles and streams by the snow covered curbs. Drain pipes are overflowing.

  • Lisa January 20, 2012 (1:12 pm)

Watching & hearing big slides of snow falling off neighbors houses that have metal roofs. Doesn’t seem to be happening with composition roofs. Wouldn’t want to be under those when they land!

  • newnative January 20, 2012 (1:32 pm)

Still wearing snow boots and rubber over pants. Some parts are clear, some slush and some ice/snow. This is Admiral along California

  • Lura Ercolano January 20, 2012 (1:36 pm)

According to the district calendar published last summer before the start of the school year, January 27 was “supposed to be” an inclement weather make-up day, if needed. It was only a non-school day IF there hadn’t been cancellations.

    • WSB January 20, 2012 (1:39 pm)

Lura – I know, but for some reason they made a big deal – including it in a news release – saying they would DECIDE TODAY whether to use it for a makeup day. And then they issued an official announcement.

  • cclarue January 20, 2012 (1:38 pm)

Robo call from sps stating friday jan 27 will be a make up day and tuesday 3 hr dismissal still stands.

  • Forest January 20, 2012 (1:41 pm)

If I cleared snow off the windshield of the deserted looking car that’s been parked in front of my house for three days, would that set off the car’s alarm? Just wondering.

  • ScottA January 20, 2012 (1:50 pm)

Distinct orange blob of moisture almost to Seattle right now on the radar.

  • mickey mouse January 20, 2012 (1:53 pm)

Help, I drove north from Charlestown on Walnut today going to safeway. Somewhere along the way I lost one of my brand new blue and yellow, volvo chains. If you spot in roadway could you let me know. They were expensive and this is first time on the car :-(
    Make the snow go away!!!!!

  • a January 20, 2012 (2:00 pm)

Definitely clean the snow and ice off your car! Just drove I5 N and moved to a new lane bc someone was tailgating. He sped up, ice and snow flew off his car bounced on the road, flew up on my car and I thought my windshield was cracked. It was like large rocks hitting my car.

  • MikeRussellFoto January 20, 2012 (2:03 pm)

I posted some photos to my Facebook page from some of the sledding fun on Wednesday. These were taken on Spokane near 46th. http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.360050720688494.102738.200275369999364&type=3&l=709508fe82

  • LAintheJunction January 20, 2012 (2:12 pm)

Careful out there – it’s a wet, sloppy disaster. I got a jump on the evening commute back to the rock and not a moment too soon. There are huge puddles of water in the right lane on SB Hwy 99 from the tunnel to the WSB, with some of the biggest in the lead up to the WSB exit. But that didn’t hold a candle to the back up on NB 99 from the WSB to the stadiums, SDOT (WDOT?) had trucks blocking the NB viaduct (?? don’t know why) and it looked ugly.

  • Jones January 20, 2012 (2:13 pm)

So is this the end of snow for a while?

  • Aman January 20, 2012 (2:13 pm)

Why aren’t snow days ever “made-up” for on Saturdays? I’m sure there are some good reasons. However, I can think of several good reasons for making them up on Saturday.

  • geek January 20, 2012 (2:32 pm)

As for the backup on NB99 around 1:30ish, I think DOT workers were just trying to make it safe for workers to clear the storm drains in NB99. There were two DOT trucks blocking traffic and I saw workers frantically shoveling the drains in front of the trucks.

  • raincity January 20, 2012 (2:32 pm)

Called Fedex about a package they tried to deliver last Tuesday. The said they are not delivering because of a power outage. I checked the map – but their area in Sodo looks fine. Anyone else having delivery issues? I’ve seen UPS around and of course the intrepid USPS. They said they aren’t delivering again until Monday.

  • ripper January 20, 2012 (2:37 pm)

UPS has been delivering all week. Got a package Thursday at my door. Fedex just sucks in general. They gave up on my delivery yesterday and today.

  • RachL January 20, 2012 (2:40 pm)

I was just outside our house cleaning off our cars and thought I would check to see if the storm drains are clear. I then realized I don’t actually know where they are and can’t see them because our street is still covered in ice and slush… Is there anywhere online to look for storm drain locations?

  • sgs January 20, 2012 (2:41 pm)

Forest, why do you want to clear the snow off a vehicle parked in front of your house? They will probably come pick it up once the conditions clear.

  • raincity January 20, 2012 (2:47 pm)

Just saw a fedex truck drive by and called back the fedex number. Grrr. They tell me they aren’t delivering to WS today – I guess the truck I saw was a mirage…

  • ca January 20, 2012 (3:00 pm)

I got to work safely, just de iced my car, to find two big brand new cracks across my front windshield…yipee NOT…anyone know good cheap auto glass replacement? Id prefer local in WS if not Im open :)

  • Lura Ercolano January 20, 2012 (3:16 pm)

A few years ago (2008?), when weather interrupted deliveries, we wound up waiting a full three weeks for some Fed Ex packages. Their explanation was that once a package had missed its guaranteed delivery time, its delivery became lowest priority for them, behind the new packages. I guess that way they only wind up refunding their fees on one or two days’s packages, rather than doing the deliveries in order and being behind on everything for a couple weeks and having to refund several days’ fees.

  • Wolfie January 20, 2012 (3:42 pm)

Allstar Auto Glass. plus if you pay for it yourself (as compared to insurance) you get 12 car washes from brown bear.

  • datamuse January 20, 2012 (3:48 pm)

I have a UPS delivery that is late due to weather, but apparently it hasn’t flown out of California yet. Looks like the airports are open today!

  • A January 20, 2012 (3:49 pm)

USPS seems to be skipping boxes and packages that aren’t priority mail, at least on my street which is a walking delivery route. I’ve been waiting on a package that was accepted by the Westwood station on the 17th. Still not delivered.

I know there’s no use calling them. Westwood station had a long history of slowness in delivery.

I just want my stupid package.

  • Chivahn January 20, 2012 (4:11 pm)

Hoping it’s ok to get home by 6-6:30. That ramp from WSB to NB 99 sure makes me nervous even when it’s dry out…..(if I can even get out of the parkinglot here at work.)

  • Christina January 20, 2012 (4:17 pm)

Made it down to Trader Joes today. 16th/Ambaum, 1st Ave S & 128th were clear in the left lane each direction. The right lanes in each direction were hazardous as there were big patches of slush spilling over into the lane. 509 was clear and we even went 60 mph. I think once you get past the side streets, getting to the airport would be no prob. The worst part of the whole trip was our long driveway and the TJs parking lot.
Also, in case you were wondering, TJs was fully stocked.

  • Sue January 20, 2012 (4:28 pm)

Lura, FedEx won’t even refund the shipping on those packages held up by weather – it’s a situation out of their control, so they can get out of refunding it. I know because I also had a lot delayed during the 2008 storm. Nobody could tell me where it was, when it was coming, came like 2 weeks late and no refund for shipping. I try to avoid them now when I can as a result.

  • GWS January 20, 2012 (4:35 pm)

@RachL – Look on Google Maps (satellite view) it does a pretty good job of showing the drains.

  • coffee January 20, 2012 (4:55 pm)

Roxbury safeway has a nice clean parking lot. The new management company of Westwood Village get an F in their ability to keep the lots clean. They are much worse than the other owners. I got stuck 3 times today in there.

  • K January 20, 2012 (4:58 pm)

Avoid Fauntleroy Way past California intersection. Ferry traffic parking in street not on side, complete gridlock!

    • WSB January 20, 2012 (5:08 pm)

Thanks! We have a webcam on our Traffic page showing the street there – will check it out for inclusion in the running commentary. Maybe worse because the Tacoma Narrows Bridge is closed and more people might be ferrying to Southworth.

  • AEL January 20, 2012 (5:28 pm)

120 bus seems to be missing. I was at 3rd/virgina stop for 40 mins before I gave up. Now I get to walk down Genesee. Boo!

  • SJ2 January 20, 2012 (5:44 pm)

Wow, glad we opted to go to the Roxbury safeway instead! I have almost always had bad experiences with Jefferson Square. The Roxbury safeway’s parking lot is very clear and safe.

  • Alki Resident January 20, 2012 (5:53 pm)

@Wolfie-_Smart Glass is a great place to go.It’s much more affordable than Allstar and you’re not paying for 10 car washes. You’re in and out in an hour.

  • DF January 20, 2012 (6:13 pm)

You can make a difference by cleaning your storm drains close to where you live 80,000 in sea. And only a crew of 18 to keep them clear. Shovel your fallen leaves year round. Happy shoveling. :)

  • MercyMoi January 20, 2012 (6:22 pm)

Mickey Mouse – I saw your chain. It’s on northbound Admiral Way, just past bridge. I had to park on Admiral Way to access City View, the first street on the right (East) off the bridge. Just about where the bike lane starts and where there’s a “No parking south of here” sign, you should find your blue/yellow chain. I saw it there when I was parking (12:30 pm today).

  • MercyMoi January 20, 2012 (6:24 pm)

Oh – HA! Maybe I got your location wrong, mickey mouse. I thought you were headed TO Walnut. You’ll find a chain where I described in any case.

  • yumpears January 20, 2012 (6:31 pm)

RachL – my husband and I just cleared all the drains around 47th and Alaska and Edmunds. The drains are a couple feet to either side of the corners. Some corners have two drains and some only have one (and occasionally none). We just dug our shovels in where we thought they would be until we found the drains.

GWS – Saw your comment and looked for the six drains I just cleared – I didn’t see any of them on google maps (its too blurry that close).

  • chill January 20, 2012 (6:34 pm)

Is it to late to DOT to clear the ferry traffic lane on Fauntleroy? Seriously annoying and a mess.

  • Gina January 20, 2012 (7:20 pm)

All my Fed-Ex and UPS packages have been delivered this week, my mail has been delivered daily, except on days that there was nothing to deliver, and on Monday walked my garbage can out of the alley to the garbage truck on the side street, and made a deposit. Comcast cable stayed on, power stayed on. Dug out the drain in the alley.

Waited less than an hour for the bus to and from work, took the water taxi one day and the shuttle bus made it up California way without a problem.

I am out of milk, but since I never buy milk, not a problem.

    Thankfully yours,

    Gina.

speaking of cleaning snow off cars.. tonight we were driving behind a silver saab sedan. they hadn’t even bothered to clean the snow off their back windshield! get a clue before you hit the gym, genius!

  • Steph January 20, 2012 (8:39 pm)

We have started the pool as to when the last piece of snow will have melted off the lawn. I say 2pm Saturday. Anyone else care to guess? (Just playing for bragging rights.)

  • Eaglelover January 20, 2012 (8:40 pm)

Finally made the trek to work today, overall drivers were good out of the hood exept the big truck trying smash down some slush in the middle of Cali that sprayed us going SB…there’s rocks and ice in that slush you just sprayed on us! Getting on the WSB from Admiral going east–as others said clear your SUV. Huge piece of ice flying off and nearly smashed me from the high bridge. I passed you as you stopped? In the bus lane to clear your snow/ice that slid forward off your roof, glad someone didn’t hit you.
Thanks dot for doing a good job clearing the roads and Patrick for his insight and of course the blog for having a place to communicate all this.
