West Seattle Crime Watch: Report roundup, early Thursday edition

The new Seattle Police some-reports-available-online system currently has reports that are as new as just two nights ago. So in this roundup, we have seven burglaries, one attempted robbery, and we also have the report from last week’s incident in which shots were fired in Westwood just before officers found a beaten-up victim – read on for all of the above:

The following are our summaries of the provided narratives, which have a variety of details “redacted” (blacked out), including names.

BURGLARY, 8100 BLOCK 34TH SW, 6 PM MONDAY NIGHT: The victim told police she was taking a shower when she heard a “loud, crashing noise … from her living room.” She subsequently found broken glass in the living room under a window – and spotted someone (described as a black male teen) trying to get in. She yelled at the would-be burglar, who took off westbound on SW Thistle.

This next incident is the same one we reported on here and here:

BURGLARY, 9200 BLOCK 26TH SW, 3 PM MONDAY: A woman was in her kitchen when she heard the door from her basement squeaking – she turned around and saw a stranger shining a flashlight at her, before he turned and ran back down the stairs into the basement, which he’d apparently gotten into by breaking a window. She grabbed a phone and ran to call for help; through a window, she saw the intruder jump the fence and run westbound on SW Cambridge. The officer who responded listened to the description and recognized that of “a known burglar in West Seattle,” whom he had stopped the day before. (Editor’s note: Though the report does not mention this, we were told by police on Monday that the suspect was arrested.)

BURGLARY, 7700 BLOCK 35TH SW, BETWEEN LAST FRIDAY AND LAST MONDAY: Police were told that several thousand feet of #10 and #12 copper wire was stolen from a construction site over the weekend, along with two coils of shielded conductor wire and two 100-foot electrical cords.

BURGLARY 3700 BLOCK SW MYRTLE, BETWEEN JUNE 1ST AND JUNE 10TH: The victim says that sometime in that time period, after she’d had to go to the hospital, someone she knows stole a book of checks and three bottles of prescription drugs from her home. She thinks the emergency workers who took her to the hospital might not have locked the door. Two of the stolen checks were reported to have been cashed – one for $2,400 and one for $2,500. She told police a former boyfriend might have had something to do with it.

BURGLARY, 7300 BLOCK 19TH SW, BETWEEN JUNE 9 AND JUNE 12: While the victim was gone for a few days, someone broke a window and stole two TVs, a laptop, a Wii, and 10 Wii games.

GARAGE BREAK-IN, 6300 BLOCK 50TH SW, SATURDAY NIGHT-SUNDAY MORNING: A detached, unlocked garage was burglarized by someone who made off with a bag of golf clubs.

BURGLARY, 7700 BLOCK 8TH SW, LAST FRIDAY NIGHT/SATURDAY MORNING:
The night after the home’s resident died at a hospital, somebody broke into his house. This was discovered by a neighbor, who police found with a Seattle Animal Control officer who was there to take the dogs that had been living with the man who died. They both had noticed a smashed window on the west side of the house, close enough to the front door that the burglar could have just reached through the broken-out window and unlocked the door. A flat-panel TV was the only item obviously missing.

ROBBERY ATTEMPT, 900 BLOCK HENDERSON, 9:30 SATURDAY NIGHT: A man waved down police to tell them that moments earlier, he’d been waiting for a bus when a vehicle stopped, and somebody got out and grabbed something belonging to him (editor’s note, SPD redacted whatever it was that had been grabbed). The victim tried to grab the item back. Someone else leaned out of the car and brandished a knife. Shortly afterward, the two people drove away, northbound on 9th SW.

Last but not least, the police narrative from the incident a week ago in which one person was found beaten up in what was originally lodged as “assault with weapons” because shots were fired too (but didn’t hit anyone). So much is redacted from this one, we’re just going to put an “x” or “-” where there’s an obvious gap:

At or about 1838 hours, I responded to fight disturbance in progress with shots fired in the vicinity of -th Av SW and SW Trenton St. Dispatch advised responding units that several callers reported seeing a group of teens fighting in the field and hearing four gunshots.

Upon arrival, I noticed a large group of about twenty subjects huddled around a black male victim who was sprawled out on the sidewalk, located on the northeastern corner of the intersection. The sprawled out victim was later identified as x . I exited my patrol car and approached x . Initially, based on the helpless position that his body was resting on the sidewalk, I believed that x had possibly been shot. I asked x where he was shot, but he did not respond. Several witnesses that were standing around informed me that x had been badly beat up but was not injured by a gunshot. SFD responded and treated x at the scene for serious injuries. Medic-One responded to the scene transported x to HMC for medical treatment.

Witness, advised me that he witnessed the suspect vehicle leaving the scene at a high rate of speed. Additionally, – stated that the suspect vehicle was a – bearing Washington license plate -. Backing units later located the suspect vehicle at 30th Av SW. Washington DOL records identified the suspect vehicle, – as being legally registered to – . Per my request, the vehicle was impounded at the SPD vehicle processing room pending a search warrant. I noticed – had a small laceration on his right earlobe and was breathing heavy. advised me that he was involved in the disturbance and identified – as his ” told me that it was about ” that jumped him and his cousin and shot at them while they were running.

At the intersection of – Av SW and SW Henderson St, Officer observed three subjects with soiled, bloodied clothes that matched the suspects descriptions. informed me that he would be able to identify the subjects that assaulted him. I transported to the intersection of – Av SW and SW Henderson St for a victim show-up. positively identified the three suspects later identified as – , and – as the subjects that assaulted him and his cousin . – also led me to the area where the shots were fired from. With directions, I drove to the intersection of Av SW and SW Cloverdale St and located approximately four spent 9mm shell casings on between the – . portable classrooms.

– contacted me and advised me that she was inside the portable when she heard what sounded like a fight disturbance followed by three gunshots coming from outside. Furthermore, – said one of her students (whom she did not identify) witnessed the fight disturbance. – pointed out shell casings as well as several miscellaneous items
that she found in the near vicinity of the portable that was most likely discarded as a result of the fight disturbance. I photographed and collected all shell casings and miscellaneous items from the scene. I transported – back to the SPD SW PCT. At the SPD SW PCT, – agreed to provide me with a written statement about this incident.

In his statement – reported the following: On 06/09/10, – went to the gym to play basketball with his cousin
, and his ( ) two little brothers witnesses – and – . The – were unable to play in the gym, because of a previously
scheduled wheelchair program that was going on inside the gymnasium. The – saw a group of about six playing basketball outside the community center’s fenced in area. Neither – nor his two younger brothers recognized any of the six – that were playing basketball. Four of the – males were playing basketball while the other two watched their friends play two-on-two. The -approached the six – and asked them if they wanted to play basketball. The – males said they wanted to play but asked the – to wait until the two-on-two game was over. Shortly after the two-on-two game ended, the – once again asked the – if they wanted to play basketball. The – told the – that the court was too wet to play before they walked off the court.

The – returned after a five minute absence and confronted the – with about ten total subjects. One of the – (later identified as -) asked why he jumped his “little homie?” (The suspect was the person responsible for a – against a – that occurred in the – neighborhood several weeks ago.) – told – that he did not know anything about who jumped his cousin. – asked – to – with the “- that
he fought in . ( – told l and the – , no” he didn’t want to fight. The – decided not to fight and started to walk away. The – left the basketball court and walked towards the southwestern corner of the school. and about six other – followed the as they walked off the court. When the – got next to the portable classrooms, located at the southwestern corner of the school, they noticed four additional – and a – with nice rims waiting for them. The group of – said, – Based on their aggressive demeanor it did not appear as if the intended to rob the , but
rather fight them. – and and the rest of East African males jumped on – and -. Witnesses, – and – were able to run away and escape before they were assaulted. The – punched – and -all over their bodies causing considerable pain and injury. The group primarily concentrated their attack towards – .

During the simultaneous attack the attackers broke off into two groups, one group focused on – and the other group assaulted -. – was finally able to break free from his attackers and ran towards – Av SW. – followed his cousin as he fled. As they ran away, the two victims heard about four gun shots coming from their rear. As they ran
away, the – continued to chase after the two victims and repeatedly engage them punching and kicking them as they tried to get away. The assault continued until the victims were able to make it to the – Av SW and SW Trenton intersection. Shortly after arriving at the intersection, – collapsed and sprawled out on the sidewalk helplessly. It wasn’t until shortly before Officers arrived, did suspects – , – and end their attempt to assault the two victims. (See statement for greater detail.)

– received three cuts on his lips, and complained of pain around his eye and ear as a result of this assault. claimed that he did not know of the – that jumped him. – was transported to HMC with serious but non-life threatening injuries. – and – were later transported and booked into the KCJ for Investigation of Assault.
