Liquor-license suspension for Westwood Village restaurant

vatsana.jpg

We were just over at Westwood Village and noticed passersby squinting at those two big orange posters (photo above) in the window of Vatsana’s Thai Restaurant, so we had to check it out too: Liquor license suspended till 10 am Wednesday (five-day suspension, for “furnishing alcohol to a minor”; the restaurant’s regularly closed Sundays anyway, so no one was there tonight).

Is this place’s thai food any good? I’ve been meaning to try it.

Their food is quite tasty. It’s no Buddha Ruksa, but it’s certainly passable if you’re down in this end and want thai food. I’d recommend the Salmon that’s on the Chef’s Special list – sadly I can’t remember the name of the dish, but it’s a salmon fillet with sliced ginger and veggies. Also their red curry is delicious – I like it with tofu or chicken. The only drawback in my book is that they don’t have brown rice.

It’s unfortunate that they ran into Liquor Board issues. It can happen to anyone. All it takes is one kid with a fake ID, or one person whom you’ve served multiple times (and therefore no longer card) who doesn’t have their ID with them, or it’s expired.

yes, their food is very good. Second to BuhdaRuska. We get it to go most of the time. I cant imagine why or how someone got to drink underage there.

Awesome thai food, and really nice owners. Incredibly clean kitchen too!

I tried to answer this but i think I got trapped in the spam filter.

In short: yes, they’re good. Not the best in town, but good for quick satisfaction of a craving.

The only thing I have ever had there is their seafood soup. But I’ve had it many, many times. :) And, the place is definitely clean and the staff is good.

They do have a nice little lunch menu, btw. Personally, I like to try new places off their lunch menus.

Love their beef panang curry – I used to go there a lot when I lived over there.

I 2nd the Evil Jungle Noodles (the name cracks me up!). It’s a shame about their liquor license but I’m glad I can still eat there.

Thanks for the recs. Tried some today after a day of painting and it was pretty d*mn tasty. Had the Pad Kee Mau with chicken and fried spring rolls. Will eat there again, next time I”ve blown too much cash @ Target.

Guess I’m the lone voice of dissent on this one. I think their food is pretty mediocre. Their menu isn’t great, no chicken gra prow or chicken massaman curry for example. Last time we ordered take-out we got what was apparently fish sauce with a hint of pad thai. Not good. I’ve given up and would now rather make the drive to CrackChickenTown when I’m craving Thai food.

    where the hell is crackchickentown?

  • kirida May 27, 2008 (8:11 am)

We have been going there for years and are always satisfied with the great service and delicious food. I love their pineapple fried rice and pad see iew. We usually order the same thing (chicken pad see iew, not spicy) and they always have it ready in minutes. I also love how family friendly they are. When it’s not busy, the staff often comes out and plays with our two-year-old.

s – crackchickentown is Budda Ruska, the crispy garlic chicken is also known as “crack chicken” – just try not to get hooked.

  • saney May 27, 2008 (11:12 am)

ah…well, since i dont eat chicken, i suppose i am safe. their garlic fried rice with tofu was pretty good.

yes–ginger salmon. i like this restaurant a lot and just ate there last night. the yum (beef salad) is great and their tom kha tofu is one of the best i’ve had. prices are very reasonable and they pour kendall jackson wines.

Sorry, comment time is over.
