pamMemberYou may want to contact Katie Hanson at Arbor Heights elementary. She is the schools speech therapist and may have a reference or be able to refer you to someone who can help. She is a sweetie and has a good reputation.

BonnieParticipantI don’t know of anybody who comes to the home. Are you wanting to bill your insurance? My son is on the autistic spectrum also and really needs more OT but I haven’t done any more outside of the school district because it’s so hard to get a 4pm time slot. Wish I could get someone (who takes insurance) to come to my home.
Good luck!!
btw-my son gets his speech from katie Hanson at AH.

allidennis9ParticipantPam,
Thank you, and I’ll follow up with Katie. You never know.
Bonnie,
I am looking for someone who comes to the home, as my son’s ABA therapy and the fact I have a second child precludes me from driving to and fro, ad nauseum. I know of others (in other neighborhoods) who have speech come to their home. Am hoping WS will afford the same.
BTW, have you checked out my post in the ‘Open Discussions’ section entitled ‘Impacted by Autism’? If you haven’t written (or preferrably called), please do! Could you spread the word to others in your AH program? We need to inundate Eileen. I’d be happy to chat with you. PM if you’re interested.

BonnieParticipantI did check out the link, went to reply and got some error message. Then I closed it and didn’t go back. I’ll check it out again.
I brought my son back and forth to therapy for 6 years and paying parking and co-pays for so long I just got sick of it. I have another child too and had to drag her along. I just don’t think it works well dragging them all the way downtown.
Have you checked with the school district? You can get free therapy through them and INSIDE West Seattle.
Also, is your son going to the preschool through the school district? Developmental Preschool. There is one at Roxhill and one at West Seattle Elementary and it is great. (also some at Lowell and other areas but I’m not sure exactly where) Lots of therapy, etc. Free too if he qualifies.

allidennis9ParticipantBonnie – know what you mean about dragging the sibling along. It’s one of the reasons for seeking in-home therapy where possible.
I am able to get ABA and OT in-home, it’s speech that is the problem.
My son goes to the Alki Elementary Developmental preschool and to the ‘extended day’ program for children with autism. Yes, he gets therapy through the school program, but it is all group based (not individualized) and is of limitted benefit for him because he is so overwhelmed in group settings.
The link I hope you check out is in regards to a bill we, at Washington Autism Advocacy, are putting before the House and Senate in January to mandate health care insurance coverage for autism therapies (since therapies other than limitted OT are not covered for most of us – despite their efficacy). Hope you check it out, write/call our Rep. Eileen Cody, and let her know West Seattleites care about this issue. She will co-sponsor if she hears from enough of us. I can help you with sample letters or scripts if such an action seems daunting. Also, if you know of others living here in WS impacted by autism (your parents/in-laws, caregivers, therapists, parents of your childs classmates, etc.) we would love for them to write/call as well. It is so important to all kids on the spectrum! There, now I’ll get off my soapbox.
In your post were you stating that it is possible to get therapy through the school district outside the classroom and one-on-one? If so, please tell me more, as I am not aware of such a thing.
Thank you, Bonnie, for all of your thoughts/ideas. And I hope you make your voice heard with respect to autism insurance parity.

Baggy6sMemberI know a FABULOUS speech therapist who does home visits. Her name is Kayle Shulenberger and you can reach her at kayle_shuly @ mac.com.
Kayle is an expert in a technique called PROMPT (she even teaches it). http://www.promptinstitute.com I’m not sure if she see kids with autism but it’s worth checking.
In the 4 months we’ve been seeing her my 2.5 yr old son has made great strides (he has verbal apraxia and sensory processing issues). Kayle also happens to be a long-time West Seattle resident.
Good luck!
