SWEL preschoolMemberAttention! Now enrolling at SWEL Preschool for next school year, September 2009 to June 2010; located at Southwest Youth and Family Services. We are a non-profit preschool based on the Reggio Emilia learning model focused on preparing your child to enter into the world of Kindergarten. We have an extensive dual-language model, teaching your child Spanish at an early age. We have teachers that are fluent in Spanish, Somali and Arabic. Early literacy and experiential learning is an important focus at SWEL preschool. Working on writing and reading skills is a daily task, with take home materials (homework) for extra practice.
At SWEL our mission is to provide a high quality part-time preschool experience for children ages 3-5 in a warm, nurturing, culturally relevant environment. Our vision for SWEL is a high quality dual language, multilingual and multicultural early childhood program that fosters the holistic development of each child within the context of their home culture and language.
The classroom is designed to provide a comforting homey learning environment where your child can feel at ease as soon as they enter. Around the room you will find labels on almost everything including the English AND Spanish word for the item. The classroom is structure to include teacher-led and student-led activities, science experiments and projects, walking field trips, and the freedom to explore and create.
SWEL preschool is apart of the City of Seattle’s Step Ahead program, providing free preschool for families that fit within income guidelines. As a partner with Sound Child Care Solutions: A Consortium of Child Care Centers, SWEL preschool holds strong values for anti-bias practices and a culturally relevant environment.
Please feel free to drop by to see the new classroom, ask questions about our program, and enroll for next year. The SWEL preschool classroom is located inside the South West Youth and Family Services building, which is located at 4555 Delridge Way SW, Seattle 98106; beside the Delridge Community Center and across from the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center. We are enrolling 3 and 4 year olds for next school year, beginning in September 2009 to June 2010.

SWEL preschoolMemberLearning for Life starts with Preschool
I am Elidia, former teacher and now director, at Southwest Early Learning (SWEL) located at South West Youth and Family Services on Delridge Way. I am part of a team with Sound Child Care Solutions (a consortium of child care centers dedicated to high quality early learning) who started SWEL last year with a City of Seattle Step Ahead Preschool grant. We provide a multilingual (Spanish, English & Somali), Reggio Emilia inspired early childhood program to children and their families (free to those families who qualify).
I was interviewed this week by King 5 News! I have never been filmed before by a TV station and it was an exciting experience. The TV crew was very impressed by our classroom and the kids did a great job. The interview experience and the questions that the reporter asked made me think about how I would like to share some of the same information with my own community.
The show that King 5 is producing is called, “Learning for Life.” That is exactly what a preschool experience can do for your child – help him or her to become an enthusiastic, life long learner! Sending your child to a high quality early learning program, is one of the best ways that you can help your child to be successful in Kindergarten.
What I have learned through my education studies and my years of experience as a teacher watching young children grow is that preschool provides a place for children to strengthening their socialization skills. They learn how to compromise, be respectful of others and problem-solve. Preschool is a place where your child can gain a sense of self, explore, play with her peers, and build confidence.
It is inspiring (almost magical!) to watch a withdrawn child who does not know how to contribute at group time blossom into a confident child who is able to wait their turn, share their toys, sing with their friends and listen to an entire book without interrupting. I am fortunate to see such transformations every year at my preschool.
Please call Tana, our MLK Vista volunteer, @ 206-790-7500, if you would like to visit our classroom and are interested in providing this kind of learning experience for your child.
