hooper1961Memberany decent sushi restaurant in west seattle?
February 17, 2011 at 6:17 am #717672
Garden_nymphMemberAzuma sushi on California Ave in the Junction, just north of Easy Street Records. It’s tasty AND affordable.

cjboffoliParticipantMashiko is not only one of the best sushi restaurants I have ever been to (including in Japan) but it is one of the very best in Seattle overall. One of the few also doing sustainable sushi. Really remarkable chef at work there.

Garden_nymphMemberMashiko is wonderful; I just can’t afford it.

Garden_nymphMemberHelper Monkey,
Thanks for the link, it may be my new favorite. I will be sharing it with all my friends!

nighthawkParticipantWe always eat at Azuma. I am a huge sushi fan but my husband does not like fish at all. Azuma is the best of both worlds. Great sushi but plenty of wonderful non-fish dishes also.
For non sushi dishes, I highly recommend the nabiaki udon or the sukiaki beef. Great for a cold rainy Seattle day.

ZenguyParticipantWhile not fancy interior wise, Kamei (next to Lee’s Asian) has some great sushi at a great price. My grandmother like their Tempura and my brother likes the Teriyaki, good miso too.
Ran into JOB there one night with the hubby…hey Jo, miss ya.

redblackParticipantseconded – or thirded – or whatever for mashiko.
but garden nymph is right: with a bottle of wine and dinner for two, be prepared to drop a franklin, after the tip.
maybe more if you get the warm bakery nouveau brownie and green tea ice cream insanity afterwards. :P

flowerpetalMemberMashiko is outstanding. However, we don’t go there. It is way too noisy to carry on a dinner conversation for my likes. We go up the street to Kamei.

lucky chickMemberKAMEI!! Wonderful sushi, great family running it, more than reasonable… our favorite restautant -full stop- in West Seattle by far. And pretty much fave sushi in Seattle.

JimmyGMemberCan’t stand Mashiko.
We’ve had rude service. Not just bad, but rude.
The sushi isn’t worth the cost or the attitude.
Azuma does in a pinch if we stay in WS for sushi.
February 17, 2011 at 5:01 pm #717684
SueParticipantWe also go to Kamei. I admittedly haven’t been to Azuma or Mashiko, so can’t compare, but I never felt a need to try anywhere else.
February 17, 2011 at 5:05 pm #717685
LindseyParticipantMashiko’s is my favorite! For special occasions, the boyfriend and I get the chef’s course. I think it’s $60 for two. They bring you far more food than is listed on the menu. It’s delicious, and fully sustainable. Outside of special occasions, I like Azuma. I guess I should try Kamei sometime.
February 17, 2011 at 5:26 pm #717686
JoBParticipantLindsey..
you really should try Kamei..
It’s great sushi and sashimi when you don’t feel like spending bigger bucks for a special occassion.
the bonus round for hubby is that i (not a raw protein eater) order a bento with sashimi and he gets mine…
zenguy…
i bumped into you in some of the nicest places.
you are definately missed here.

JiggersMemberJapanese food anywhere is always expensive. I second Kamei. Good value, service and pretty fresh too.

WSBKeymasterIf he asked whether there are ANY sushi restaurants, period, Let Me Google That For You would be in order.
Recommendations are how the forum started. As opposed to just googling and getting somebody on one of those all-review-all-the-time sites. I apologize that we have yet to catalog past discussions appropriately, but thanks to everybody who good-naturedly shares their thoughts yet again.
As for us … Azuma Sushi is a favorite. Keep in mind, we’re fairly simple in our sushi tastes, basic rolls like avocado. Would be great to go there for lunch if I weren’t going downtown to two court hearings! Haven’t been there in a while but also always appreciated the friendliness of the gentleman (an owner perhaps?) who we always see behind the sushi counter.
February 17, 2011 at 6:07 pm #717689
AlParticipantSpecial dinners or if we want to splurge: Mashiko is our choice and a bar seat is preferable.
We have always been pleasantly surprised by Kamei…sit at the bar – great staff there to chat with too.
February 17, 2011 at 7:13 pm #717690
MargLMemberHaven’t been in awhile but we used to be regulars at Kamei. Works great for take-out, too! Call in the order, pick it up and have tasty sushi in the comfort of your own home! :-)
February 17, 2011 at 8:21 pm #717691
biankatParticipantAnother vote here for Mashiko. Love the garlic edamame!
February 17, 2011 at 9:16 pm #717692
catladyMemberTry Kamei. The food is great, the owners even better and a pleasant atmosphere. I’m not the sushi eater of the family, but I love their bento boxes, donburi bowls and the kiddo loves the teriyaki. Plus, the miso soup is outstanding!

hooper1961Memberthank you all for the input
February 18, 2011 at 7:36 am #717694
AC11579Participantthumbs down for mashikos and sustainable sushi. I want some hamachi and spyder roll.
February 18, 2011 at 5:32 pm #717695
beachdrivegirlParticipantMashiko’s is definitely the best sushi in West Seattle if not all of Seattle. And like a previous poster mentioned their chefs special is to die for.
