Does anyone know of a place to take old smoke/carbon monoxide detectors to be recycled? The manufacturer won’t take them back (they would if they were just smoke detectors, though). The city utilities said they don’t recycle them and to just put them in the garbage. They have trace amounts of radioactive Americium 241 as well as all the plastic and electronics, so I’d rather recycle than trash them. I’d be willing to take them somewhere locally or mail them to a recycler, if only I can find one! Any ideas?

Unfortunately, no, they don’t take these at the recycling event. When I called Friendly Earth – the sponsor who does this part of the recycling event – they said they do take regular smoke detectors. But these require special handling and they would have to charge me $15 each to recycle them. So now I guess I have to decide how committed I am to recycling them… :)
