I live at the top of Fairmount Canyon. I used to get the occaisional Opossum in my yard. I havemn’t seen one for five years. Has anybody else seen one? What area and how many years ago? I still have racoons and I saw coyotes a couple of weeks ago but I am afraid for the opossums…

They are known as “goods from the woods”…. I think I know where they are… simmering in sweet taters and onions,

Next shortages of squirrel (Jimmy Martin fav-o-right) raccoon… let’s see what the jobs and unemployment rate are next week. More recipes?

I love possums, and haven’t seen one in a long time. Used to run into them on top of Queen Anne a few years back, but that was the pre-coyote era. They’re more reclusive than raccoons, but still, it does seem odd they’re so scarce these days.

I see them a few times a year in Highland Park.

So, kootch, in other words, you’re saying the decline, or perhaps even extinction of possums in the Fairmount Ravine area is due to Obamacare?

We used to see a possum regularly when we first moved here 4 1/2 years ago, but not in a long time now. (Lincoln Park area)

Still plenty of raccoons around though.

Coyotes probably have something to do with this.

We’ve still got lots of opposums in our neighborhood (along with lots of cats), but that’s because South Delridge has a lot of car traffic and few large greenbelts.

As you get closer to the big greenbelts, where coyotes have more quiet places to hole up, you’re likely to see the population of all coyote prey species decline.

DBP, I live a ten minute walk from the West Duwamish Greenbelt and see plenty of possums, squirrels, rats (unfortunately) and even cats.

It *has* been awhile since I saw a rabbit, though.

Have seen 1 a number of times over the past year run across Erskine and into the hedge/bushes at the Villa Heidelberg B & B.

Thanks you guys. Except “Mike” who apparently thinks extinction of a species is a joke. Must be a Republican (usually stupid OR evil, but sometimes both…)

We have the nasty things all the time. They get into the garage and parade through the yard. Every year they build a nest and the babies run around, too. Hard to get rid of!

There is nothing wrong or nasty about opossums they are to stupid and blind to be either. They are just trying to live their lives.

Mike? RU Kidding? our Mike?… Mike was screwing with me.. cause I posted the “goods from the woods”. smarmy post.. and he is no Republican. That I can swear to. Last time I defend ya Mike.. but fair is fair… lol. The coyote debate rages on.. they are not a native species … they are invasive.. but Seattle Animal Control won’t control them. It’s the urban thing… cats are my pet peeve… killers of song birds and native species… but lord above we have cat lovers… it’s us. we upset the natural balance. I suspect without the natural host of predators and prey balance… opposums are never in short supply when there are humans around. Too many goodies around to eat.

Opossums are anything but nasty! They are natures scavengers and get rid of nuisance pests for their diet including unwanted bugs, insects, and rodents. They do not harm plant life or gardens and are immune to most disease. One of few wildlife who’s feces is not dangerous to humans. They are of benefit and I would hope you would stop trying to get rid of them.

I don’t think we are trying to get rid of them… I think there was some speculation on why the are disappearing… they sure aren’t around disappearing around my house! No they aren’t nasty.. but they are ugly!

Not you Kootch! Karen called them nasty and wants to get rid of them. I was hoping she would reconsider knowing they are the good guys of wildlife. Taking care of our waste, from garbage, to roadkill, to unwanted pests.

Actually – they are nasty. Their droppings can carry disease – like many other wild animals. They can climb well and get into very small areas. When they get inside they can do tremendous amounts of damage to a house or shed – or garage! They get into the garden and eat the fruits and veggies and will go after the chicken eggs and even kill the chickens if given a chance. And when they have young they are very protective and have about a million sharp teeth.

I didn’t say I wanted to get rid of them entirely. I want to get rid of them from living in my garage. Hey – if you want her – come and get her!
