JoBParticipantI have been shopping at one of the asian groceries in White Center and came home with an amusing surprise last sunday.
i bought what i thought were ideal sandwich buns for bbq sandwiches but when opened they have what seems to be a purple bean paste stripe in the middle.
I think they are called Ube b rolls (the stamp is difficult to read)from the Depsi Delite Bakery.
The grandkids wouldn’t touch them but hubby is valiantly eating them with peanut butter.
anyone know what these rolls are?
i guess i needed to ask more questions at the grocery :))) So far, i think i amuse them …they are unfailingly kind and helpful as i read labels and ask questions… but shopping there has had a few unintended consequences… like incredible vinegars…

datamuseParticipantUbe is a kind of yam. Steamed or baked buns with some sort of filling (often containing pork) are a dim sum staple, though I’m not sure from your description if that’s what you have.
The buns are often called bau (spelling varies) which might be what the B refers to. Are they slightly sweet?

WSBKeymasterData point, Full Tilt has offered ube ice cream in the past!
If you haven’t already googled, I found this – apparently it’s Despi Delite, on Beacon Hill – with at least one reviewer mentioning a treat with ube.

MrsLMemberI grew up eating those. It’s a Filipino bread that’s quite tasty. If you have a hankering for more Filipino bread, I definitely recommend Delite Bakery. They also make non-filled bread (pan de sal – kind of like dinner rolls but a little sweeter) that would be great for bbq sandwiches. When my parents visit, we always head up there to buy an assortment of bread. It reminds them of the Philippines, since the bakers hail from their home islands. Delite Bakery is a short trip from WS.

JoBParticipantMrsL..
the pandeSal is what i thought i was getting…
the ube filling isn’t bad.. it was just surprising… and out of grandbaby comfort zones.
i will definately go to the source for more bread.. maybe they will be able to better inform me about what i am getting:)

IrukandjiParticipantMy first thought would have been that my buns were menstruating, and I’d have popped them back in the fridge until they felt better.
They sound pretty tasty!

datamuseParticipantI have never tried putting myself in the refrigerator under those circumstances. (Or any others for that matter.)
