TraciMemberSeriously how hard is it to make SOUP!? I just ate a can of Campbell’s light (I know, I’m asking for it…) vegetable soup and am amazed at how much it sucks.
You know what soup doesn’t suck though? Charleston Cafe’s clam chowder!!! Just thinking of it makes my sad stomach groan at me for putting this nonsense horrible excuse for soup in it.
Where can one get a good bowl of soup, chowder, or chili in WS?
December 10, 2008 at 6:09 pm #649687
JenVMemberElliot Bay almost always has great soup and chili that changes on a daily basis, and on Fridays they usually have chowder.
My new favorite soup at home is Wolfgang Puck Classic Tomato with Basil. Yum. Add a little Tabasco and some shredded asiago cheese.

austinMember+1 for elliot bay chili. That stuff is goood.

WSMomParticipantMy personal favorite is the soup at Blue Willow Luncheonette. Yesterday was Lentil or Creamy potato garlic! Yummy! Warmed up my toes! I occasionally work for Patty and see the healthy ingredients and care she puts into her meals. I’ve learned a lot about how to make a fabulous veggie broth (somehow mine still isn’t quite as good!)

ZenguyParticipantThe Chopinio at Morgan Thriftway is really good. I had never heard of Blue Willow, I am going to check it out…thanks for the tip.

squareeyesParticipantI haven’t been there in awhile, but I’ve had delicious soup at Shadowlands a couple of times. A glass of red wine, a bowl of soup – good for the soul.

JanSParticipantMet Market has some pretty good soups in it’s deli area, esp. the Tomato Basil…yummmmm…and there are rolls right there to go with it. They have (usually) chili and some kind of chicken soup….usually about 6 choices. And there’s cioppino bacl by the fish dept.
December 11, 2008 at 2:24 am #649693
pigeonmomParticipantPho @ 88 Deli on Delridge and Tom Ka Gai at Olarn are good.
December 11, 2008 at 3:07 am #649694
bunnypugMemberDitto the Tomato Basil at Met Market and I nominate the sublime Tom Kah soup at Buddha Ruksa. Fresh herbs, sliced ginger and lemongrass in a chili infused coconut milk broth.
December 11, 2008 at 3:15 am #649695
CaitParticipantTom Yum @ Buddha Ruksa
Chowder @ Charlestown
And if you feel like a little bit of a trek, there’s Saimin Soup from L&L BBQ in Renton. I made the trek today, and it was well worth it. Mmmmm.
December 11, 2008 at 5:08 am #649696
missaudreyhorneParticipantI third the tomato basil at Met Market, but have to tell you about another wonderful soup there! Autumn Pumpkin!! It is smooth, creamy and delicious, perfect for a cold winter night!
December 11, 2008 at 5:10 am #649697
TraciMemberI think a trip to Buddha Ruska is in my near future. Thank you all! You made a bad soup day much better.
Is Blue WIllow the place off California? It does catering…? That soup sounds delicious!!

WSBKeymasterDuke’s non-standard chowders (there’s one with bourbon and corn, exact name escaping me).
Tomato basil at Easy Street and West 5.
Miso soup at Azuma Sushi.
Pho at Pho 54 just across the city-limits line on the north edge of White Center (16th/Roxbury). We only got around to trying pho for the first time a couple months ago. Reminiscent of Hawaii’s trademark saimin, only vastly more savory. And the lighter rice noodles are a nice touch.
Haven’t been there for a while (and it’s still for sale) but Angelina’s Trattoria always had excellent chunky minestrone.

BonnieParticipantWhy don’t you all do a soup swap in January. I think National Soup Swap Day is January 24th. I think.
December 11, 2008 at 7:08 pm #649700
ellenaterMemberOh ya, i love good Miso. Traci, Buddha Ruska is almost too good to be true. I love them so much it hurts.
December 11, 2008 at 7:24 pm #649701
inactiveMemberYES! SOUP SWAP!!!!!!!!!
Somebody start a new thread for it!!! That’s only a month and half…let’s calendar it!
I would LOVE that!

ellenaterMemberK, but II’m bringing rumballs.

beachdrivegirlParticipantWhere is the best French Onion Soup??? Any suggestions?
Safeways soups are all pretty good.:)
December 11, 2008 at 10:54 pm #649704
CaitParticipantOo second on the Safeway soups. Though I’m partial to Metro Market, I really love Safeway Jambalaya. If Metro made a Jambalaya I’d be all over it. Seeing that they’ve been branching out lately, I’m not counting it as out-of-the-question.
December 11, 2008 at 11:09 pm #649705
carrieannMemberSafeway has a Butternut Squash soup and a Thai Coconut Chicken Curry soup I really like.
Met Market’s Chicken Curry soup and Spring Asparagus are both really yummy, and my husband loves their Cioppino.
I’d also love to know where to get the best French Onion soup in WS. I have a few recipes that I enjoy, but it’d be nice to know where to find some when we’re out and about.
December 11, 2008 at 11:18 pm #649706
JenVMemberwent to Shadowland for lunch today – the potato leek soup was SO good!
Elliot Bay BrewPub has yummy French Onion soup.
December 11, 2008 at 11:47 pm #649707
ZenguyParticipantNot West Seattle but wow the pictures look good!
December 12, 2008 at 12:01 am #649708
carrieannMemberMmmm, Zenguy, that does look good! I do believe I’ll be having some french onion at some point this week. And that citysearch link reminds me that my soup list should include a nice bowl of Than Brothers veggie pho (extra tofu, please) with lots of lime and basil. See also: cream puffs.
Also not West Seattle, and I’ve yet to personally eat there but have read through the chef’s cookbook, a friend of mine swears by Hopvine Pub’s soups. Worth looking into, perhaps.
December 12, 2008 at 12:15 am #649709
JenVMembercarrieann, if you want REALLY good veggie pho, you should try 88 Restaurant in White Center – 9418 Delridge Way S.W. they don’t have cream puffs, though, which is a major shortfall on their part.
December 12, 2008 at 12:45 am #649710
beachdrivegirlParticipantOMG Zenguy, that soup looks to die for! I might even run to the store on my way home from work to pick up some some ingerdients to make my own french onion. :)
