We’ve been dragging Craigslist and various other sites for weeks to no great success, so I’m now at least semi-desperate.

We’ve been living up on Charlestown for 3.5 years and hate the idea of leaving the neighborhood, but the house is being sold. We’ve two young boys and would love to stay nearby, but are open to all of west Seattle. We can handle a smaller home, but not an expensive home, as both boys are in day care (if you haven’t done it, just know it’s REALLY expensive).

Hence, if you see anything around the ‘hood that is in the lower-to-mid $1000 range (I know, but..), PLEASE reply here with leads.

Oh, and to make it more difficult, we have a large, elderly dog with whom we would be loathe to part.

odroku, Have you yet tried the oft-suggested “Drive Around Looking for FOR RENT Signsâ„¢”?

I’ll keep my eyes opened for signs in the Highland Park/South Delridge/Westwood area.

    Good luck!

We have, but mostly just in our area. Been very thin. I guess it’s a landlord’s market right now?

You can contact Ty at Cayce & Gain but I’ve heard it’s slim to none pickings. That means prices are skyrocketing.

We had an experience with that company before and will say nothing more about it than that it’s a dead end.

We’re definitely seeing what you said. Prices are up, which makes me fear we have he leave the city, which saddens me.

It’s a brutal housing market out there. It took us months to find another rental house and we ended up having to pay $2,000 a month. People are outbidding even on rentals paying up to a $1,000 more a month than asking just to get the house.

2 places we looked at last week we turned away and left because in 5 hours they already had over 30 applications.

I wish I had better news to share from our experience but unfortunately all I can say is good luck. Fingers crossed you find something.

Keep talking to people and letting them know. Landlords who have had bad tenant experiences will be looking for some thoughtful folks. Try posting where you can- churches, Chaco Canyon, any offices with a bulletin board. I know it’s old school but there may be other avenues of connection.

Sorry this is so hard — some awful explosion in housing prices.

Outbidding on rentals? Yikes. Makes me wish I had one.

Try Shelly- she is a mom from our elementary school, and she is great!

Not surprised. I haven’t seen the rental market this tight since the late 90s–when I bought a house because that was actually more affordable.

I am keeping an eye out in Highland Park but have only seen apartments so far.

Is there any flexibility in the amount you can spend and are you willing to take an apartment if it took your dog?

Would you consider the unincorporated area just outside of West Seattle? Burien?

This is a long shot, but there’s a vacant rental a few houses down from me. I don’t know who owns it, or what their plans are. Perhaps if you wanted to you could leave a note on their door? This is a crazy market!

The way people respond here is a reason we are loathe to leave the community. West side = best side!

Thanks to all of you. I hope we shall eventually have happy results to report.

Saw this around the corner tonight. 2 bed one bath pets negotiable for 1295! This is a screaming deal for gatewood area. It looks small, maybe 1000 sf but totally cute. 206 937 8778. Requirements say 3.5 times monthly rent for income, background check, no smoking, 1000 deposit and 13 month lease. Good luck!

Since the subject comes up often and times are hard finding a rental, maybe a new tab could be offered for rentals. Kind of like lost/found pets. Sounds like it could be helpfulfor many.

If I recall, I think the WSB has a policy against curating this rental information, maybe because of all the rules with Fair Housing, etc. I see postings all the time on Craigslist that violate Fair Housing rules saying things like “no families” or “no Section 8” which are both “protected classes” in Seattle that it is illegal to discriminate against. So, once you allow for a designated rental tab, it is actually a lot of work to make sure that all the postings are legal and appropriate, and also not scams. These are my guesses about why WSB doesn’t do this.
