anonymeParticipantSorry to be a nuisance, I’m restoring an old house myself and things just keep cropping up….
After stripping off the aluminum siding, it is apparent that the vinyl replacement windows need to be correctly re-installed. They weren’t put in properly in the first place, but now they sit proud of the siding by at least two inches. Does anyone know of a good, smart, inexpensive handyman or carpenter, experienced with old house issues, who could help with this?
Thanks in advance for yet another recommendation…! The WSB community is just the best.

miwsParticipantanonyme, if you haven’t done so already, you may want to contact WSB Sponsor Ventana, and see if they are going to have anything addressing this, (or any other aspects of your resto), in one of their upcoming Workshops:
http://www.ventanabuilds.com/workshop.htm
Obviously, those Workshops would have to fit in within the time you need/desire to work on the particular aspect.
(And you are not being a nuisance! We love ya here in WSBLand! ;-) )

clark5080ParticipantAre these the type that just sit inside the frame? Or do they have a nailing strip on the outside?
May 31, 2014 at 11:01 pm #808997
anonymeParticipantclark, they appear to have had the nailing strip removed. They are screwed into the edge of clapboards, not even into the jamb or a stud. No flashing, either – really poor installation. Bordering on dangerous, I’d say.
Mike, thanks for the heads up and the kind words. Unfortunately, I couldn’t do this job by myself even if I could figure it out…oy.

LenaParticipantWe had Cheryl Boyce put in base trim in the clinic for us. She was wonderful all around and does just about any kind of contracting work and was very fair price wise. 206-767-1954. She came very highly recommend from one of my clients I really trust who is a contractor himself. She is local to West Seattle.
