I am redoing the floors in my condo and I am wondering if anyone has any experience with Bamboo flooring? I want to go “green” but I also looking for good resale and durability.

You might want to check out Bamboo Hardwoods if you have questions. They have three Seattle locations, the closest to West Seattle being:

    4100 4th Ave. South

    Seattle, WA 98134

Amy: Pinnacle floors did the bamboo flooring in my house. I didn’t deal with them directly but they were the contractor my builder used and the builder is very experienced and has excellent taste so the fact that he vetted them says a lot. Pinnacle installed solid flooring (as opposed to veneer laminates) that was pre-sealed with a water-based, low VOC finish.

I’ve lived with the bamboo for a couple of years now and it has been excellent. Not quite as bullet-proof durable as some people would have you think. But fairly solid and beautiful.

    .

I’m sure you’ve read that bamboo is favored as a greener choice for flooring because it grows extremely fast and does not take decades to replenish itself as hardwoods do. It is also very dimensionally stable, meaning it does not expand and contract with heat and cold as much as many other woods do. This is especially valuable for folks who have underfloor radiant heating systems.

    .

One downside on the bamboo is that much of the flooring on the market is sourced from China and as such must be transported by sea vast distances to our local market, burning lots of fossil fuel to get here. If you consider that, and the fact that properly harvested Washington State hardwood flooring that is locally cut, milled and finished is actually lumber from trees that have sequestered large amounts of carbon in their lifetime (carbon that remains sequestered in your finished flooring) the “green” advantages of bamboo are not so cut and dry.

    .

Best of luck to you. I hope you are satisfied with the end result of your install.
