I’m apparently the last to know, but I just learned that the DOL no longer gives new drivers’ tests. Anyone with experience handling this in West Seattle? I need a test (maybe with lessons first, maybe not) for an adult who’s never had a license. Wondering about costs and recommendations for a company.

I assume you’re talking about the written test as well as the road test – both are outsourced to private companies now. There are some DOL locations that provide road tests but they are few and far between, I think the closest one may be Bellevue.

My teenagers took drivers’ ed at Puget Sound Driving Academy in Morgan Junction – our experience there was just OK. One kid ended up taking the road test with a company called NorthStar Driving School in Federal Way (we wanted their Burien location but they were booked and she was determined). Had a very positive experience with them, they were very accommodating.

Drivers ed classes run about 6 weeks (3 classes/week) and cost around $400-500, and include 5-6 behind-the-wheel sessions. Many driving schools also offer private behind-the-wheel lessons but I don’t know cost. The road test costs between $30-45 depending where you go.

    Good luck!

My sister just did Puget Sound Driving Academy. They seemed reasonable.

Thank you, that helps. I felt so caught off guard!
