Putting aside (or not) the question of whether we are “happily unhip,” I’m wondering if you agree with this statement from Sunday’s Seattle TImes: “… some long-timers affectionately call [West Seattle] ‘The Peninsula.'” I’ve lived here since 1986 and had never heard WS called this until the last year or so … I’ve certainly never called it that myself. But maybe I’m not old-timey enough …

I call it the peninsula, and sometimes I even call it “the island”…as in “off the island” or “on the island”.

Once in a great while I’ll call it “The Peninsula”, but mostly I just call it “Wesseattle”.

    Or “Home”. :-)

I call it West Seattle or ‘A small, progressive town in the middle of a city’.

I’ve been here since the ’80s and never heard it called “The Peninsula.” When I hear that term I always think of the Olympic Peninsula.

I’m with you, elikapeka … maybe it’s an ’80s thing!

Interesting though that some people use it. Anyone else???

we call it “the rock”. i.e. “Hey, anyone leaving the rock this weekend?”

we weren’t here in the 80’s, but were in the 90’s, not that that means anything….

So where is this “best Reuben in the city” in Westwood that the article mentions?

I’ve heard it called that in the last several years before I moved over here. Can’t recall who I heard it from though, whether they were old timers or transplants.

On another note I went to a conference in Florida recently and there was a large group of us from the Puget Sound region and people would ask, “oh you’re from Seattle? What part? I’m from Federal Way/Auburn/Everett.” “West Seattle” No, I wasn’t kidding about the Seattle part.

    TreyseaLin,

That would be Eats Market Cafe for the Reuben.

@TreyseaLin, could be Eats Market Cafe. Pretty sure they are known for their Reuben’s.

@treysealin, that would be Eats Market Cafe. I have no opinion – don’t like Reuben’s :)

FWIW, we have often used “peninsula” to describe West Seattle here on WSB … curious how far back those references went, I just checked the archives and they go back to the very beginning, December 2005. More than 530 of the 27,000-plus published items in the news section include the word “peninsula.” It appeals to me because I have always been particularly interested in reinforcing the notion of West Seattle as ONE community, ONE peninsula, from Puget Sound to Elliott Bay to the Duwamish River to the city/county border, despite attempts at east/west and/or north/south divides … TR

My friend and I call it “The Rock” also…but apparently Vashon has been called that as well. That sucks – I like “The Rock”. I call Seattle “The City” – which my East Coasterites do a lot, as well. We’re used to NYC, Boston, Philly being shortened to “The City” and always oddly know which one we meant without needing to clarify.

Why not just call WS “The Best”…or, my favourite… “Closed” – no more influx! ;)

Hawaiians often refer the islands as “the rock” as in “I need to get off the rock” learned that from several friends in the dorm at UW that grew up over there. I think teenagers see more opportunities off the rock.

I’ve always called it, West Seattle, but I’m starting to call it, Ballard.

I’ve lived here my entire life, (since the mid fifties), and have never heard it referred to as ‘the Peninsula’, the peninsula was everything west of the sound, the Rock was Vashon, and the city was downtown. Until the blog started up, I had never heard of half of the neighborhoods mentioned.

I call it the island. It’s irony. :-)

I refer to it as “a” peninsula, not “the” peninsula…the article “the” is reserved for “The Olympic Peninsula”

Funny, I actually balked at the “peninsula” comment when I first read the article, too. Everyone I know calls West Seattle “the island”; as in, “You’re going to Ballard??? What, like, OFF ISLAND? Do you have your passport and visa? Have you had your shots??”. ;P

The peninsula has always been across the water to me. W.Seattle is W.Seattle . We have been here since the 70’s.
