I’ve been a cat owner most of my life – always short-haired cats – and have never felt the need to bathe them. A few years ago I was chosen by two adult long-haired cats (one himalayan, one tabby/possibly maine coone cross). I think the tabby would benefit from a bath – he’s got greasy patches. Any personal experience recommendations? Thanks!

I used to take our cat in to the shop that’s now Stella Ruffington’s to get a summertime ‘lion’ shave. Very funny, and she LOVED it (afterward, anyway, rolling around on hot asphalt and in the garden).

    squareeyes,

I am in the same boat.. about 13 years ago I adopted 2 mostly (the vet thinks) maine coons who had been abandoned at a few weeks old. I had never been owned by long haired cats before.

Our vet is West Seattle Animal Hospital at Jackson Square – they have groomers there. The last couple of years I’ve taken them there for a lions shave in early summer, and baths at various times, they really seem to appreciate it. And the girls at the clinic go on and on about how good they are for them.. Why do they fight me so much then.. :)

I don’t recall off the top of my head what the fees are, although I think its been quite reasonable.

I’ve attempted to bathe my cats at home and its not fun, so pretty much any fee within reason is better than getting all scratched up.

WS Animal Hospital is my vet as well. It didn’t occur to me to ask them if they do grooming. I’ll give them a call. thanks!

I have a maine coon too, although I think he’d kill me if I ever tried to bathe him. As it is, we have to take him ever 2 months to Lien to spend $9 to have his nails cut. It’s cheaper than a transfusion for me. :)

I’ve considered taking him for grooming. Maybe he’d ever forgive me someday!

I think maybe cats are like children, they behave differently (better) when not with their owners/parents. I was quite surprised when the vet told me that Jasper was really cooperative and sweet. I have not had that experience when attempting to bathe him at home.

Probably right, Franci. Mine is funny at the vet. He growls at them (which he never does at home), and yet he allows them to do whatever they want to him. With that low growl, you’d expect him to maul someone. :)
