We had two bunnies in our front yard this morning. I’m a transplant from Pennsylvania where wild bunnies were plentiful. I’ve lived here for 15 years in WS, but never seen a bunny. Is this unusual? Anyone else seeing these critters? My daughter and I are excited, DH is worried about the veggies, but I think there’s more than enough to go around.;-)

If they are small brown bunnies yes they are native.

If large and various colors then they are the pet kind.

    Enjoy them

We see them all the time up by Pathfinder School in Pigeon Point. They are super cute.

It always surprises me to see native bunnies in West Seattle. It doesn’t happen very often but it’s a welcomed surprise when it does. I once saw a snake in Discovery Park.

Cool – thanks for the replies. We will definitely enjoy them and hope they stick around.

There used to be lots of them in the Arboretum at SSCC. Coyotes established a den in the area of the Chinese Garden, which diminished their numbers somewhat, but they’re still there.

Shed, you bring up a good point. Not all wildlife is cute or warm-blooded. Discovery Park once had a lot of ‘small’ wildlife including snakes, salamanders, ground-nesting birds – even some unusual spider species. Off-leash dogs have pretty much eliminated all of those.

I enjoy seeing wild bunnies once in a while, but would not like to see the population grow out of control. (The cliche ‘breed like rabbits’ is well understood for a reason.)

Not to dismay my wildlife loving neighbors, but does anyone know whether these wild rabbits are OK to eat? I love to cook rabbit once in awhile and remember fondly a butcher (not in Seattle) who would butcher a live farm-raised rabbit (or chicken or turkey) while you waited. Talk about absolutely fresh and amazing!

I have no issues with hunting, but I can tell you these bunnies are not worth our time. They are just way to small and not easy to catch
